There's a good chance ill be on my own this Hogmany and I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

I'm planning on getting some nice cheeses in and snuggle Iin bed with good food and the kittens!
What cheeses would you buy and chutneys?
Oh and does anyone have any recommendations for places I could maybe buy these cheeses for home delivery as i dont live anywhere that has a decent choice and I want to treat myself to something a bit nicer than just Asda or Tesco!

If I were on my own and I would make a very tasty meal from baked camembert with nice bread

I'm a lover of brie with chilli chutney (and grapes if I want to feel healthy)

FurryDogMother · 14/11/2019 11:30

My absolute favourite cheeses are (in no particular order):

Stinking Bishop - not sure where you could get this, though
Lime and Chilli from The Great British Cheese Company
A ripe Brie de Meaux
Cave-aged Gruyere (I think Waitrose and Ocado do it)
Port-soaked Stilton (again, unsure where you'd get this)

Accompaniments would include truffle honey, red and green seedless grapes, sharp green apples and Opie's Pickled Walnuts (preferably the version done in Port).

Peckish now!

Manchego with some quince paste
Soft goats cheese with truffle honey
Truffled Brie
Comte

Rick Stein had a massive cheese feast in his French food programme the other day. There were nine types of cheese including Racklette melted over potatoes.

Justmuddlingalong · 14/11/2019 11:42

Are there any farmers markets or food fairs near you in the run up? There would be plenty to choose from, and sample. 😉

SoftBlocks · 14/11/2019 11:42

Sorry Raclette.

happystory · 14/11/2019 11:48

Black Bomber

Volvemos · 14/11/2019 11:49

Roquefort

SweetPeaPods · 14/11/2019 11:49

Ocado will have a great section.

Nottobesoldseparately · 14/11/2019 11:54

Wensleydale Cheese Factory in Hawes deliver cheese hampers.

They do one of my most favourite cheeses ever, Fountains Gold. It's bloody lush.

So, id have some of that, a blue goats cheese, Roquefort, Manchengo, five counties, Yorkshire Brie, a really strong cheddar and some Wensleydale at the minimum.

And I'd have Branston, quince jelly and chilli jelly. With an assortment of crackers and butter.

camelandsushi · 14/11/2019 11:56

@FurryDogMother if you EVER feel like company and a bottle of red to accompany your said cheeseboard. I'm there.

ArabellaPilkington · 14/11/2019 11:58

Oh good Lord - kittens and cheese how fabulous!!!! 😻

My absolute favourite real treat cheese is Montagnolo Affine. A triple creme, multi award winner. It's just divine. Also love a mature Gouda.

I think the bits alongside make it. I like a Bolli cracker, sometimes a water biscuit.

Frozen Sable grapes, crisp cold celery, walnuts. And a really good chutney or some pickled pears or veg.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 14/11/2019 11:59

Tracklements do some lovely pickles/chutneys

Love a good wodge of Blacksticks.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/11/2019 11:59

Cropwell Bishop Blue Shropshire (Riverford.co.uk)

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/11/2019 12:00

Oh! Not on Riverford anymore - but almost certainly on Ocado.

DuggeesWoggle · 14/11/2019 12:06

Currently dairy free so this is like a fantasy thread for me. I would have to have

a good soft blue cheese
a strong, sharp cheddar
a nutty creamy cheese like emmental
Soft goats cheese log
Smoked cheese
an oozy cheese like camembert or brie

I would need to go to a specialist cheese shop and sample all the cheeses to be sure I'm getting the best Grin

Serve with a lovely full bodied red like the Wolf Blass yellow label, a smoky whisky with the smoked cheese (would need smoked salmon too) and maybe even a sweet dessert wine which would go with the brie/emmental type cheeses. Port obviously too.

I would also have a selection of sliced deli meats, olives, fig chutney, caramelized onion chutney and some chilli jam.

Selection of crackers, must have oatcakes and some rustic wheaty ones and really good salty butter.

Gorge self silly and wake up on NYD vowing to do Veganuary Grin

www.thecourtyarddairy.co.uk/shop/category/buy-cheese/christmas-cheese/

We got our wedding cake from here and visit regularly, they do cheeses that you don't see everywhere and always really good quality. We have to limit our visits because we always spend a fortune.

DuggeesWoggle · 14/11/2019 12:08

Accompanied on the TV by a murder mystery a la Morse, a 1000 piece jigsaw and my crochet. Box of posh chocs for pud.

I could live for a week like that Grin - who needs Christmas dinner!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/11/2019 12:33

@Plump82 - Fortnum and Mason do deliveries, and I don't think their delivery charge is high - they have a lovely selection of things in their food hall.

Jolly's of Orkney also deliver - they do some lovely cheeses from the Orkneys - I love Grimbister cheese - and they do interesting biscuits (Westray bakehouse biscuits, for example) and chutneys. Deliveries are free over £20, I think.

StormOfSekhmet · 14/11/2019 13:26

LemonPrism · 14/11/2019 13:50

Chaorce, goats cheese, chilli and fog chutney, blue Stilton, Yorkshire Brie

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 14:32

Oh my goodness. All these suggestions sound wonderful!! I'll be taking notes. Thanks everyone.
Good shout about the Christmas markets. I'll check them out. It would be lovely if we had a farmer's market but sadly nothing like that.
