There's a good chance ill be on my own this Hogmany and I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

I'm planning on getting some nice cheeses in and snuggle Iin bed with good food and the kittens!
What cheeses would you buy and chutneys?
Oh and does anyone have any recommendations for places I could maybe buy these cheeses for home delivery as i dont live anywhere that has a decent choice and I want to treat myself to something a bit nicer than just Asda or Tesco!

Get a selection from pong

StoatofDisarray · 14/11/2019 18:35

Ardrahan If you can get it. It's a semi soft cheese with a beautiful butteriness and more than a whiff of farmyard. I love it.

iklboo · 14/11/2019 18:56

Oooh I've just seen you can get a cheese advent calendar. Nothing posh or mind blowing but I'd definitely prefer it to a chocolate one.

Caboc, a Scottish cheese rolled in oats with the consistency of butter
Just lovely 😊

Katinski · 14/11/2019 19:04

SoftBlocks I watched that. Rick was definitely struggling when the raclette, the last cheese, came outGrin

Katinski · 14/11/2019 19:08

My christmas day cheese course is going to be a well aged stilton, a bottle of port, and a bowl of walnuts. All to myself. Perfect!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 14/11/2019 19:08

La Vallage - best cheese ever
Bourdain
Brie with truffles
Blacksticks Blue
Wensleydale

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 14/11/2019 19:09

Boursin. Not Bourdain

champagneandfromage50 · 14/11/2019 19:13

We have a fantastic cheese shop and always get a hard, soft and blue cheese. We do love manchego but at Christmas would usually get what they suggest like a Cornish jack or double gloucester, blue is either the Stilton of choice or my favourite picos de europa and I always get a Brie de meaux

champagneandfromage50 · 14/11/2019 19:13

I make my own Christmas chutney which works a treat with charcoal crackers

Londonmummy66 · 14/11/2019 19:18

Paxton & Whitfield do mail order - I used to work near their shop on Jermyn Street - I could stand outside and sniff and imagine I'm in heaven....

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 19:21

Just checked out the advent calendar. Looks tasty. Bet my tiny Sainsburys wont have it.
I have so many different suggestions to check out. Ill see what i like the sound of best and then try and find somewhere to buy them.

I forgot all about Wenslydale and Christmas cake. My MIL makes a fab Christmas cake so I'll be sure to keep a slice by.

I dont even think ill see the bells as I'll be in a cheese coma.

I'm another that recommends the courtyard diary ( we drive 70+ miles to visit ) and the cafe is great as well.
But we also use The Morpeth cheese shop, who also will do mail order.
the detective in me thinks you could be closer to that one

TwattingDog · 14/11/2019 19:31

Cornish Gold - it's a cider soaked white cheese. Crumbly and SO much flavour.

Cornish Yarg. My advice is to look for a garlic nettle wrapped one. Lush.

AwkwardSquad · 14/11/2019 19:32

I second Iain Mellis and George Mewes. Lovely lovely cheeses. And the little Italian shop near the Stockbridge Ian Mellis had an amazing raw milk fontina last time I was there.

viques · 14/11/2019 19:44

Mmmmmm . A cheese thread. In the absence of the MN People Who Make Decisions not thinking cheese is important enough to have its own permanent topic then this thread will have to do.

I am going to keep it simple.

Wensleydale with my carrot chutney served on crackers. Any crackers, but they must be very fresh, just out of the packet or freshly baked.

A real farmhouse cheddar cheese and tomato toastie with a good apple chutney . The bread to be a proper sourdough.

Cream cheese (proper, not Philly, though there is a place for it) with a good smoked salmon, black pepper, lemon juice and a slice of dill pickle on a poppy seed bagel.

I don't think it is a good idea to introduce kittens to cheese. I have made that mistake with cats before and they come to think of it as a right not a privilege.

tillytoodles1 · 14/11/2019 19:47

Stilton, brie and water biscuits would be my choice,

HowlsMovingBungalow · 14/11/2019 20:23

Agree with Cornish Yarg - Yum!

TwattingDog · 14/11/2019 20:28

Ooh, I might have to order myself one of these boxes! www.thecourtyarddairy.co.uk/shop/cheese-wedding-cakes/cheese-wedding-cake-sample-box/

joystir59 · 14/11/2019 20:30

Charcoal cheddar, no idea where from but Google will know. Delicious. Pear and ginger chutney (home made, sorry)

Shockers · 14/11/2019 20:40

Raclette and tartiflette... my two favourite things about winter holidays...

Garstang Blue from Lancashire is lovely.

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 20:42

Joystir59 ive had charcoal cheddar. Delicious. A cheese man comes to my work but he's just been so i dont know if he'll be there again before Christmas. He also sells one with yeast in it. Sounds disgusting but it tastes like bacon frazzles.

The Cheese Shed is excellent for ordering online. Get the wild garlic Yarg

Would it be sad to have one of those wedding cake boxes on my own while my other half parties away for Hogmany!!
