There's a good chance ill be on my own this Hogmany and I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

I'm planning on getting some nice cheeses in and snuggle Iin bed with good food and the kittens!
What cheeses would you buy and chutneys?
Oh and does anyone have any recommendations for places I could maybe buy these cheeses for home delivery as i dont live anywhere that has a decent choice and I want to treat myself to something a bit nicer than just Asda or Tesco!

Pong Cheese online deliver amazing cheeses - all different selections or make your own individual choices. Great for presents also. Enjoy!!

TheNestedIf · 14/11/2019 15:55

Sainsbury's does a really nice own brand soft mild goat cheese that I could eat until it was coming out of my ears.

Closer to Christmas, they do a nice range of little waxed cheeses.

Or, if you fancy surprising yourself, they're selling the Ilchester cheese advent calendar although it's limited edition so you might want to get in quick.

snowstorm2012 · 14/11/2019 15:55

Oh and they do crackers and chutneys too Smile

If you are able to receive Ocado deliveries, they have a wide selection. I like their French cheeses especially, as they are often small portions, just righter someone on their own.

amicissimma · 14/11/2019 16:01

Red Fox. Waitrose has it. Red Leicester no longer boring.

afternoonspray · 14/11/2019 16:02

A good creamy, not too waxy or stinky, Blue Stilton to have with Carr's water biscuits.
Pie D'Angloys - a soft cheese a bit like Camembert to have with beetroot crackers.
A good cheddar like Chewton's or Mrs Appleby's with digestive biscuits and chutney

Plenty of good, crisp chilled grapes in green and red; fresh figs; clementines; walnuts in shells.

Fig and cardomom chutney and a classic English apple, onion and sultana one.

midsomermurderess · 14/11/2019 16:08

I'm assuming you're Scottish. IJ Mellis and George Mewes (shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow) have excellent ranges of cheese and both deliver.

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 16:26

No waitrose near me. Or cheese monger. Only ones i think of it is the West End of Glasgow. Suppose I could go out that way. It is for cheese after all! I honestly like most cheeses. I Would say my least favourite it brie. So wouldn't go out my way to buy it but if it's on a cheese board ill still eat it! And biscuits every time.

Both Red fox and Godminster cheddar would be on my list.

shearwater · 14/11/2019 16:34

Some creamy Colston Bassett Stilton, some torte di dolcelatte and a nice gooey Brie with some Carr's wheat crackers, and some vintage port.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/11/2019 16:37

OMG all of it, choosing should be a crime, it's cheese discrimination.
One Christmas I had 17 types.

shearwater · 14/11/2019 16:38

OP, you need this:

And possibly a small cheese larder or a glass cloche. Store them out of the fridge before eating.

AFairlyHardAvocado · 14/11/2019 16:39

All of it

Seriously all of it

HTH

shearwater · 14/11/2019 16:41

I have a small cheese larder like this. Most of the time I actually store trays of eggs in it, but at Christmas it comes into its own and is actually used for cheese.

SpiderCharlotte · 14/11/2019 16:46

@shearwater a cheese larder you say? This is going on my Christmas list ...

OP, you may be in need of something sweet after (or with) all that lovely cheese. Maybe some tablet for afters? Your Hogmanay sounds like my dream evening.

TommyandGina · 14/11/2019 16:48

I would highly recommend The Cheese Society in Lincoln. Both shop/restaurant and online. I've had a couple of great visits there.

vinoandbrie · 14/11/2019 16:51

I’ve not seen vacherin mont d’or mentioned - oh how I love this cheese! I J Mellis would surely stock this?

Have a wonderful time, sounds like my type of Hogmanay 😊

shearwater · 14/11/2019 16:52

I also recommend here if you are ever down this way.

Never mind cheese - SHOW US THE KITTENS!!! Grin

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 17:04

Iklboo - Happy to oblige with kitten pics!! These wee monsters will be wanting in on the cheese action.
Why do I not have a cheese larder in my life. This could be the perfect Christmas present.

Oh my word they're so CUTE! I'd be glad to stay in with those little critters.

I don't like blue cheese (tried loads, just no for me) or goats cheese.

My favourite at the minute is a cheddar with balsamic onions through it. Weirdly I don't like marmite on its own but marmite cheddar is delicious.

DS loves sharing a Camembert with me, studded with rosemary and garlic (the cheese, not DS) and warm crusty bread.

chillychicken · 14/11/2019 17:50

Pie d’Angloys
Wensleydale (with a slab of Xmas cake)
Comte
Stilton
Epoisses
chaource
Manchego (with Parma Ham)
