What snacks would you take on a long haul flight?

Just looking for ideas!

We are travelling with Thai and last time the food was shit.
We want to take lots of snacks that will survive 14 hours, can get through security and would be just what you needed on a long flight

Just me and boyf, no kids 😉

We always need pringles

BinkyandBunty · 12/11/2019 21:39

None, except maybe mints for before I get off. I could not be arsed. Honestly, airline food isn't that bad, you can always change your preferences so you just get a fruit platter.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 12/11/2019 21:39

Not nuts in case of allergies

Cheese straws. Popcorn

Ginfordinner · 12/11/2019 21:40

Was the food really awful or just not to your taste?

MozzchopsThirty · 12/11/2019 21:40

Mmm yes Pringles

Deffo popcorn too

Just thinking if there's any more random stuff I could take

Fruitella

SavoyCabbage · 12/11/2019 21:41

I always take fruit.
Sandwiches.

It’s cold on planes so it will be fine.
Don’t take nuts.

Expressedways · 12/11/2019 21:41

Buy food in the terminal? I don’t see why you’d take stuff from home as U.K. airports have loads of stuff and anything like sandwiches will be a few hours fresher.
The flight home might be a struggle though!

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 12/11/2019 21:41

Peperami

DrWAnker · 12/11/2019 21:42

Pretzels
Vac packed olive pouches

MozzchopsThirty · 12/11/2019 21:42

Food was pretty rubbish, chicken was rubbery and lukewarm. I've ordered a vegetarian meal this time.
I usually love plane food, but this was awful

Mmm a fruit platter to keep me going for 14 hours Hmm

Bag of dried fruit like Mango or coconut?

Protein bars.

Macadamia nuts.

MozzchopsThirty · 12/11/2019 21:44

Yes I know there are shops in the airport
See my previous post about the lounge

I see long flights as equivalent to 12 hour night shifts, when you need to eat shit to keep you happy Grin

I always get thirsty and dehydrated on planes, so I wouldn't take anything too dry or salty.

From home, I would take satsumas (my favourite fruit and it transports well), Bonne Maman madeleines (they're individually wrapped and stay very fresh), and a simple sandwich made with delicious bread (if you wrap it up well it would stay fresh for several hours). And maybe chocolate.

I would also buy some tasty food in departures.

Esspee · 12/11/2019 21:49

I have always found the food on long haul flights perfectly acceptable (It's only one day) but if you really can't stand it I'd go for sandwiches or wraps and fruit. You would need to finish it off before you get to your destination as many products (especially meat, cheese and fruit) aren't allowed past border control.

Expressedways · 12/11/2019 21:53

I’m sorry but I don’t understand about the lounge and why that means you can’t go to a shop. We always manage to do both when we fly as the inflight offerings can be a bit shit (last time my veggie meal and DD’s child meal were missing) and I’m not usually a fan of the lounge food. We usually go en route to the gate, it takes like 2 minutes max to stop in Pret. That way you can get something more substantial than just nibbles as I’m with you that you definitely need more than a fruit platter. All there is to do is eat, drink and watch films, you need to be prepared!! No nuts though in case someone allergic is on the flight as you will be told not to eat them. Pringles, chocolate and protein bars are an excellent shout!

AnotherEmma · 12/11/2019 21:57

I always go via Pret if I can, love Pret Smile

MozzchopsThirty · 12/11/2019 22:01

Ok will remember no nuts

Definitely pick up some protein bars, Pringles, crisps & chocolate
Still wondering if I can get away with babybel 🤔
Plenty of haribo for the boyfriend
Definitely fruit tella for me

I'm not making anything, will just buy from Sainsburys on way to airport

Some great suggestions thanks

Boiled sweets. Jelly babies. Nuts. Flapjacks. Breadsticks/ cheese straws. Pringles. Pretzels.

PoptartPoptart · 12/11/2019 22:04

Do not take nuts of any description. Not even in protein bars or in chocolate bars.
Nut allergies can be fatal. Not worth the risk and certainly not at 30 thousand feet.
Just have a decent meal in the lounge or in one of the airside restaurants before you board and then pop into Pret or Boots or somewhere and get a meal deal to take on the flight. That should be plenty to keep you going.

NonUrinatInVentum · 12/11/2019 22:06

Nuts are almost always fine and if they're not they'll simply announce it at the start of the flight and you don't open the bag. Better to have them and not need them.

I flew Geneva to JFK almost 9 hours and then on to Washington DC plus wait time. My Babybel we're still perfect when I got to my hotel room more and 14 hours after I left home!
