What snacks would you take on a long haul flight?

MozzchopsThirty · 12/11/2019 21:30

Just looking for ideas!

We are travelling with Thai and last time the food was shit.
We want to take lots of snacks that will survive 14 hours, can get through security and would be just what you needed on a long flight

Just me and boyf, no kids 😉

I just use one of those containers with an ice pack in it. But I don't eat airplane food.

Xmasbaby11 · 12/11/2019 23:10

Choc rice cakes
Sweet chiĺli crackers
Favourite biscuits
Little cakes e.g. French fancies, madeleines
Jaffa cakes
Minstrels

I'd take loads, but I am quite greedy!

carrots555 · 12/11/2019 23:12

Yeah, Boots do sandwiches and pasta pots as well as packets of chopped fruit and yoghurt/oat pots. Plus the standard crips/choc/drinks etc. I'd get a combination of those.

You could eat a hot meal in departures and then use the Boots haul to tide you over until you land and can go get another hot meal.

A pack of hot cross buns.

Purpleartichoke · 12/11/2019 23:30

I’ve got allergies so always bring food
I start with nuts and peanut butter. I need protein and my allergies and the constraints of travel mean I have few other options. I’ll add in some beef jerky, but my stomach can only tolerate so much of that. Also
Crackers and dried fruit.

QuimReaper · 12/11/2019 23:31

Are you allowed to take fruit on a plane?!

Not sure why so many people are being weird about this OP Confused Airport outlets have a staggering markup, and airline food is an a cal byword for inedible slop.

delivereeee · 12/11/2019 23:45

Quim why wouldn't you be able to take fruit on a plane? Of course you can. They sell it on there too.

I'd hardly call the extra 60p on a boots meal deal staggering 🤷🏽‍♀️

OP is paying out for a lounge, flying across the world. Surely it's stranger to prefer a sweaty sandwich over one bought just before you board the plane

Flower777 · 12/11/2019 23:53

We always take loads of snacks.

Haribo definitely good. Also fruit. A recent sandwich or salad. Crisps or pringles.

CherryPavlova · 13/11/2019 00:02

I’ve never taken anything more than a few sweets to suck on takeoff and landing. Airline food ha enough choice to find something and swallow down with a glass of wine. Some is quite edible- cheese and biscuits, fruit platter, scones, salads. Admittedly the main courses aren’t Michelin starred quality but there’s usually plenty, particularly as flying long haul makes me want to eat less and sleep more.

keyls · 13/11/2019 00:07

I don't, I just saunter over to the Business Class kitchen area and take whatever snacks they have there, whilst helping myself to more champagne. Wink

Kinsters · 13/11/2019 04:35

They let you in and out of the lounge and it's not separate from the rest of the airport, you can come and go as you please/do shopping (if you've got lots of hand luggage you can leave it there while you shop).

I used to take loads of snacks but found I prefer to sit down in my seat and not have to bother getting up/rummaging through my bags so I don't bring anything anymore unless I feel particularly hungry at the airport and buy a chocolate bar or something.

Kinsters · 13/11/2019 04:38

Meant to add, if you're in a lounge then just eat the food there/take a few things away with you.

Honeybee85 · 13/11/2019 04:51

Somehow I always crave salty things when I am on a plane 🤔. I would go for Pringles, salty crackers and perhaps instant noodles? Surely you can ask the flight attendant for some hot water to prepare them. Bananas is a good idea as well.

Mrscog · 13/11/2019 05:01

Won’t you feel like shit if you only eat sweets/snacks for 12 hours? I would have a slap up meal in the airport and then fast - ready for first meal of the holiday to be a feast!

cordeliavorkosigan · 13/11/2019 05:05

No not all junk, you'll feel rubbish.
For each of you, 2x pret 'main' (eg sandwich+ salad or wrap+ sandwich) plus 2x treat plus bring an empty water bottle and refill after security. This gives you 2 meals you can eat when hungry and not be stuck behind a tray for an hour .
The Trouble with going on the way to the airport is you have to get it through security.

VirtualHamster · 13/11/2019 06:15

Definitely order an unusual meal, it's always better & you will get it first

Gluten free is definitely not a better option, in fact it very often consists of mostly fruit. As some airports are very limited in what you can buy gluten free I normally take things with me. Homemade wraps and flapjack normally.

MozzchopsThirty · 13/11/2019 06:28

Thank you all
I'm deffo taking babybel
Marmite cheese
Sweet chilli crackers
Pringles
Chocolate & sweets

I’ve never taken food on a plane other than some sucky sweets for the dc!!
I didn’t know people did Shock never seen anyone sitting next to me get out a packed lunch of their own.
We just eat what’s given or decline if we don’t want it, there’s usually enough throughout a long haul flight to not starve to death. Plus drinks are exactly the same as what you’d buy on the ground. I Just couldn’t be arsed with the extra list of things to sort and I wouldn’t want food taking up space in my hand luggage - I only take a small handbag on flights Grin

StCharlotte · 13/11/2019 08:44

"I’ve got allergies so always bring food

You're kidding right? All the flights I've been on this year have announced someone with a nut allergy so no nuts allowed. What would you do then?

BiddyPop · 13/11/2019 09:14

As I generally fly short haul over mealtimes and plane food is cr*p (chicken and stuffing sandwich or falafel wrap), I go to a seafood place airside and buy a prawn and smoked salmon platter to eat onboard, it has salad in it and also come with 2 slices of brown bread. Have a look at the options in your airport to see what better options there are to get en route to the lounge.

Graze boxes - lemon drizzle flapjack or the dark chocolate and cherries ones are what I go for. But there is usually a reasonable choice in airports and some choice elsewhere (WHSmith in airports usually good for this as you probably want a magazine or something, and water, after security).

Nuts, trail mix, small packs of crackers or rice cakes all great and non perishable.

Fruit or portions of fruit salad, whether from home or airport. M&S or other places that do big lunch sections may also be good to get a few bits - prepared fruit, portions of cake or a bag of cookies, salad, ...

I always want a bag of crisps and bar of chocolate in my bag, I don’t always use them but they will last and I usually find I need salt rather than sweet things when traveling.

OMGshefoundmeout · 13/11/2019 09:27

If it’s Thai AirAsia I entirely agree with you about the food. We recently had an internal Thailand flight with them. We had upgraded to get extra luggage weight so the upgrade included a ‘meal’. It consisted of a small tray of unseasoned steamed rice with a few flecks of dessicated carrot and about 4 dried up sweetcorn kernels. The included beverage was a tiny plastic tub of water. For a country known for great food it was laughable.

By contrast, a Bangkok Airlines internal flight served a delicious bowl of spicy noodles and salad with fresh fruit and coffee (and of course the ubiquitous sticky coconut rice dessert) and it was included in the standard airfare.

Mustbetimeforachange · 13/11/2019 10:46

Yes, I was thinking the food had been good when we travelled internally in Thailand, then I remebered it was Bangkok Airways, not Thai!

OldEvilOwl · 13/11/2019 12:17

Cheese and crackers
Biscuits

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/11/2019 12:21

Love Pret smoked salmon sandwiches - they don't put that horrid cheese gunk with it! Also they do plain cheese sandwiches without any mayo.

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/11/2019 12:25

You need to order the Asian Vegetarian Meal as it tends to be the freshest (as it’s often custom ordered in the UK). I agree that you should really eat at the airport
