What snacks would you take on a long haul flight?

Just looking for ideas!

We are travelling with Thai and last time the food was shit.
We want to take lots of snacks that will survive 14 hours, can get through security and would be just what you needed on a long flight

Just me and boyf, no kids 😉

Of course you can get away with Babybel 😂 I take them all the time on flights with my DC.

nancy75 · 12/11/2019 22:10

Babybel have survived our trips to Aus, on one trip it was about the only thing Dd ate for 27 hours (and yes the airline food was very bad indeed)

dementedpixie · 12/11/2019 22:10

From babybel website:

Like most cheeses, Mini Babybel® needs to be kept refrigerated. However, it may be stored unrefrigerated at a room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius for several hours, such as in your lunch box.

I take the bbq cracker pot things from Aldi, popcorn, the brownie hike bar things and just buy a sandwich from the airport if I'm going budget airline, if food is provided on the flight I just eat that (choose an unusual dietary requirement for better food, on BA I choose South Asian vegetarian, far better than standard)

GlamGiraffe · 12/11/2019 22:17

I have heard it is best to avoid eating in order to escape jetlag! I think one of the main attractions about eating on a plane us something to pass the time.
If I have anything I have soe of the fruit salad pots from pretty or one of the chocolate croissants and loads of water plus a bottle of orange juice. Pringles pass the time.
It depends if you want food to fill upu up or to pass the time.
At many airports, certainly London ones, you pass pret to get into the airport lounges. I always stop there before I go into the lounge for my pret croissant as I'm not as keen on the lounge ones.

Boiled eggs 🥚🥚🥚

dementedpixie · 12/11/2019 22:22

Oh god no. They will smell

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 12/11/2019 22:24

I think you're being sensible taking food. Airports are a massive rip off. I'd rather pay Aldi prices and cart it with me then pay £2 for a bag of crips at an airport.

Yoollyball · 12/11/2019 22:24

I just order veggie and eat what I'm given!

carlywurly · 12/11/2019 22:27

I once got given a pea, carrot and potato sandwich as the veggie option on Thai airways.. Grin

dontalltalkatonce · 12/11/2019 22:28

Pepperami, cubes of cheese, Snickers, Pringles, boiled sweets, billtong.

Amani · 12/11/2019 22:28

No nuts at all. We flew BA long haul and no announcement was made about my daughter's nut allergy. In fact the lady next to me began to open a bag of nuts and I asked her to refrain and she was happy to oblige...

JessicaRarebit · 12/11/2019 22:33

Trail mix
Dried fruit
Joe & Seph’s popcorn (decadent)
Assorted bag of mints
Sweets
Biltong

I guess you could also get a sandwich from Pret or another such shop in the airport.

dontalltalkatonce · 12/11/2019 22:34

Buying food in airports is an utter rip off, and plenty of us don't have the budget for it or if you've a couple of kids in tow it can add up. Pret is disgusting and a total swizz.

Meruem · 12/11/2019 22:39

I’m not convinced about the no nut thing. I’ve been on several long haul flights where mixed nuts were served as a pre dinner snack.

delivereeee · 12/11/2019 22:44

A boots or WHSmith meal deal is £4 in the airport. What has going into the lounge got to do with anything?

You'll still need to walk past boots and can save time and faffing about going to Sainsbury’s. It'll be fresher and cheaper from the airport

delivereeee · 12/11/2019 22:45

@Meruem but if a passenger informs them of a bit allergy they won't serve it. And will tell you not to open nut products too. If op only has a box of trackers on her she'll starve to death

BarbaraofSeville · 12/11/2019 22:46

Of course Babybels will be fine. Cheese is fine for a day or two at normal room temperature or on flights.

If the airport has a Boots, you could get a meal deal after security. Or they do similar at WHSmith now and last time I looked, the WHSmith ones looked nicer.

Iwantedtrianglesnotsquares · 12/11/2019 22:46

Pack of custard creams- surprisingly this was the random hit on our last long haul. It wasn’t what we planned on taking initially, but they were great.

etimram · 12/11/2019 22:47

Granola squares from the Sainsbury's bakery keep well and are very filling.

Mustbetimeforachange · 12/11/2019 22:47

Definitely order an unusual meal, it's always better & you will get it first. When I used to fly a lot in business with work I always used to order the fish menu. More recently vegetarian & yes, BA South east Asian vegetarian was delicious).

dontalltalkatonce · 12/11/2019 22:47

Fresher? Ha. The sandwiches are all made in factories far from the airport and anything but fresh. I find meal deals way more expensive than what I can buy in Aldi or put together myself.

Chocolate covered Kendal mint cakes are great, too!

SamBeckett · 12/11/2019 22:59

As well as baby bel Tescos sell indvidual wraped mini cheese ,
soft cheeses - president = brie , goats cheese + 2 others I can't remember
Hard cheese - Tescos own I think = cheddar , edam, Leicester + umm one or two more
Both packs about £2
You can now get a box of Jacob's cream crackers individually wrapped in threes.
Peperami
Marmite Mini cheese
Rice cakes
Small pots of Branston Pickle, piccalilli or pickles
I always have a snack box with the above in as I can be be sometimes requested to go and quite long train journeys at very short notice this lives in my rucksack for days at a time with no ill effects whatsoever .
Make sure you take plenty to drink as all of the above are quite salty.

Expressedways · 12/11/2019 23:04

By fresher I only meant that it would have been refrigerated for longer as you get it right before boarding and it hasn’t been in your bag for hours already before you even get on the plane. Quality wise there’s definitely no difference!

delivereeee · 12/11/2019 23:07

Agree express Op isn't intending to make anything at home. She's going to Sainsbury’s on the way to the airport. By the time she ate a sandwich it will have sat in her bag for at least 5 hours. The boots sandwich will absolutely be fresher. Ha.
