Seconded Albert's Shed

OneFootintheRave · 12/11/2019 21:35

Hawksmoor. Great steaks and cocktails.

gobbynorthernbird · 12/11/2019 21:37

There's neither a Rudy's or Sugo in the Northern Quarter.

Platzki, mentioned by a PP, is lovely. As is The Sparrows, if it has reopened by the time you get there.
Wolf at the door is unusual and fun. I also rate CBRB.
Elnecot, Mana, and Kala aren't really my thing but pals love them.
Hawksmoor, el Gato Negro, Canto, and Dishoom for slightly posher. Or Restaurant MCR or The French for super luxe.

The markets are on so head to Cathedral Square for lovely bagels.

There are some terrible suggestions on here, though. Don Marcos and Dimitris are both very close to my work and they're only worth going to for the lunch deal (and knowing you'll be in and out in an hour).

El Gato Negro is lovely. Great tapas. Good gin.

GoldLeafTree · 12/11/2019 21:51

TNQ in the Northern Quarter is very nice but not snobby. Nice big portions and their roasts are lovely!

DogAndCatPerson · 12/11/2019 21:51

El Gato Negro (king st) - really cosy and quirky interior, romantic little tables and buzzy atmosphere.
Grand Pacific (Spring Gardens) - amazing interiors and lovely food.
Mana (Blossom St) has just got a Michelin star so that might be a bit posh for you, tasting menus from ex Noma chef. Very impressive

I’d avoid Hawksmoor. It’s a chain, you can have it anywhere.

I’m not keen on Schloss, either. It’s impressive inside but too massive, overdone and themed to within an inch of its life.

thinking2019 · 12/11/2019 21:54

Definitely Try Thai!

DogAndCatPerson · 12/11/2019 21:55

Cafe Beermoth on Brown St (around the corner from Grand Pacific) is great if you like craft beer.

gobbynorthernbird · 12/11/2019 21:55

Hawksmoor has more than one restaurant, but it isn't a chain (I think there has to be more than 10 for a chain).

DogAndCatPerson · 12/11/2019 21:57

Apologies if 10 is the correct definition of a chain, there appears to be 9 according to Hawksmoor website Grin

gobbynorthernbird · 12/11/2019 22:02

Or even 8. And a bar.
I do like it, though. And they're only in 3 cities so unless the OP is coming from London or Edinburgh, it might not be somewhere they can easily visit.

Queenonfleek · 12/11/2019 22:03

I would say erst for interesting scandi style meal .. Sugo for great pasta and coca cobana for cocktails - all in ancoats

gobbynorthernbird · 12/11/2019 22:08

@Queenonfleek I've been meaning to try Erst, shall have to give it a go.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 12/11/2019 22:10

Soup Kitchen, 31 to 33 Spear Street delicious freshly made lunches. Gigs in the evening.

Nonotmenori · 12/11/2019 22:12

Best Thai food is Thaikhun. Absolutely hands down the best!

thismeansnothing · 12/11/2019 22:18

Crazy Pedros - pizza and beer
Yard and Coop in the northern quarter

Go out to didsbury and go to Pomegranate. Amazing Persian food.

lastqueenofscotland · 12/11/2019 22:21

Crazy pedros is really naff I was really unimpressed. It’s the only time in my 30 years I’ve ever complained about a meal Blush and it was SO LOUD.

If you’re after pizza and beer Knott bar does better pizza and has one of the best keg selections in Manchester

Howaboutnoooo · 12/11/2019 22:33

Apologies for the hijack, but can anyone recommend Richmond Tea Rooms? A friend enjoyed it there but was a while ago, and some places can go downhill with a new manager etc.

SouthernComforts · 12/11/2019 22:33

Fazenda if you like meat!

I wasn't impressed with El Gato Negro, which was annoying as I'd been meaning to go to the original before it moved!

I usually eat in bars in Manchester rather than go specifically for food and I've had nice lunches in Gorilla, Mackie Mayor and Refuge recently.

NauseousNancy · 12/11/2019 22:40

Try Thai looks super tasty, will book for one of our meals.

Just working my way through the rest!!

My fav is Sam's Chophouse. So so tasty!

Campervan69 · 12/11/2019 22:47

I love The Lime Tree in Didsbury.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 12/11/2019 22:48

@Howaboutnoooo I think its fine for a small group but the two large bookings I've been part of they messed up all the orders and were pretty rude about it!
