Are there any singers/actors/tv presenters whose continued success you find utterly baffling?

I’m just watching TOTP from 1988 and Kim Wilde’s on.

I’m sure she’s a lovely woman, but fuck me, the lass couldn’t sing. Or dance. Or mime.
And yet, she’s still doing the rounds, all these decades later.

See also Bananarama. Who goes to see these acts?

I’m not sure if it’s me that’s missing something, so which acts leave you confused at their success?

Amanda Holden
Davina

But I won’t have a word said against Michael McIntyre, pure genius

GeriAtric · 09/11/2019 08:43

"Poor old harmless Andrew Sachs"

Absolutely. And yet it barely seemed to affect the careers of Ross and Brand (who are both unfathomably famous). I can't imagine women behaving as they did and still getting jobs. Same with Ant McPartlin. Careers have been ruined for less.

I don't see the appeal of Alan Carr or Jimmy Carr. The former is just unfunny imo and the latter is absolutely vile and unfunny. How he continues to get work I'll never understand.

Its not a popular opinion but have great respect for Tess Daly. I think she does a really good job on SCD and she kept her composure after being totally publicly humiliated by her husband (who should also be on the "why are they famous?" list). She's a total professional in my opinion.

Denise Van Outen - at the time epitomised everything awful about the ‘90s ‘ladette’ culture. Couldn’t stand her at all.

Speaking of Holden, years ago there was talk of a reboot of Man About the House and she was tipped for the part of Jo. Now, it was probably just tabloid shite but seriously? Why did ITV think we would warm to her? Just look at the disdain shown towards Heart for giving her the morning show.

Ben Shephard. I used to wonder how he got the job on T4 as he was dire compared to the other presenters. I read somewhere at the time that his aunt worked in tv and pulled a few strings. Can’t believe he’s still got a high tv profile. Zero charisma.

GeriAtric · 09/11/2019 08:56

I think there's definitely a lot of nepotism in the TV world.

Chanel05 · 09/11/2019 08:59

Cheryl Tweedy
Ant

Any other person in his situation would have been made a meal of in the press after his driving under the influence incident When he returns to TV all he gets is a cheer.

Butterymuffin · 09/11/2019 09:03

On the subject of nepotism, Fearne Cotton.

lolaflores · 09/11/2019 09:14

I need to put Vernon Kaye on here for consideration. The dick.
If I could have one wish answered it would be that Gemma Collins would be barred forever from any tv studio, premier, event, Marbella, Essex. Kept in strict quarantine for the rest of her natural.

SeaViewBliss · 09/11/2019 09:16

Only Murs
James Corden
Russell Brand
Russell Crowe

and all of my WTF is aimed at Tom Cruise. As a 14 year old who went to see Top Gun about 400 times, I now cannot stand him. Smug, culty twat.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/11/2019 09:24

Horehound

His name is Tom Allan and I don't find him funny at all. Just whiny and annoying.

capsule · 09/11/2019 09:27

Gregg Wallace, Rylan with the teeth and Anton Du Bek. I turn off as soon as they appear.

NightsOfCabiria · 09/11/2019 09:33

@SeaViewBliss

I agree with most of your list but Tom Cruise? He may be a bit deluded but you cant dent that the man has talent and charisma by the bucket load and he’s spectacularly good looking. His films may not be aimed at me but I really enjoy watching him whatever he’s in.

Now, Katie Price, there’s a mystery.

borntobequiet · 09/11/2019 09:41

Sophie Ellis Bextor. Caught sight of her set at a festival and thought her charmless and untalented.
However Keira Knightly is a far better actor than she’s given credit for, the problem IMO is that she’s been horribly miscast in all those bodice ripping roles. Watch her in Official Secrets playing a modern, principled woman. She’s very good.

NightsOfCabiria · 09/11/2019 09:42

Just thought of another:

Martin Freeman

He cant act and is the same in everything. He just plays himself. I wasted an hour watching ‘Ghost Stories’ on Netflix the other nigh. Utter shit.

userxx · 09/11/2019 09:43

Amanda Holden.

notacooldad · 09/11/2019 09:43

See also Bananarama. Who goes to see these acts?
Loads of people. 80's reunions are really popular right across the age ranges. My sons girlfriend s 21 and her and a gang of mates love Bananrama et al! Her mother and her friends go as well as it was their era.

keith Lemon! Is that a joke? He is a character. I quite like Leigh Francis as a comedian and Bo selector was good.

The very worst thing I've seen her doing is interviewing Prince Philip, it was cringe making. He kept looking at her as if thinking who is this cretin? To be fair prince Philip is like that to everyone who isn't in his social circle!

My turn offs are:
Matt Dawson, especially on A question of sport. I can't stand his hammed up reactions when the clock is on a countdown and he doesn't know the answer.

Greg Wallace.

Miriam Margoyles. She is often rude to people and she comes across as if she wants to shock and be edgy.

Olivia Coleman, her overacting when she wins an award is awful, especially her swearing.

Sandi Toksvig. I don't know why she annoys me when she's on TV, same with Mark 'Chapper' Chapman.

longwayoff · 09/11/2019 09:46

Leave Steph McGovern alone, she's a real person doing a proper job. Everyone else, you're right. Why are they there? And will they be there forever? Seems so.

Horehound · 09/11/2019 09:49

Yep Olivia colMan is very irritating. She's a goof

longwayoff · 09/11/2019 09:51

Denise van Outen? No opinion. Saw her boyfriend on Goggle box though, cradling their French Bulldog in his arms whilst singing a lullaby to him. Ahhh

motorcyclenumptiness · 09/11/2019 09:54

Richard Madeley (sp?). So much success, so little ability. Admirable really.

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/11/2019 10:00

I love Steph McGovern too, she really knows her stuff and does lots of work to get women in careers. Very funny too.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/11/2019 10:18

Cilla Black - who gave her a record deal is one of life’s mysteries

Lorraine Kelly has made a career out of dumbed down tv

Amanda Holden well marrying Les Dennis was a good career move

Katjolo · 09/11/2019 10:19

Keith Lemon, Tess Daley, Caroline Flack and Amanda Holden!

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 09/11/2019 10:21

About 80% of them!

FiveFarthings · 09/11/2019 10:22

Kate Humble! Can’t stand her, so bland and blerg! She will literally do a documentary about anything but will make it seem like she’s always been interested in the subject

‘I’m Kate Humble and I’ve loved rocks all my life...’
