Ridiculous things that you do for actually no reason

Whenever I pick up a parcel from the reception desk at work or from a neighbour I have to tell them what's in it. I have no idea why, they obviously don't care but I do it EVERY TIME.

Please tell me I'm not uniquely weird?!

Re the clothes thing - I realised I did this and made a conscious effort to stop. I have since noticed that if you DONT tell people where things are from after they've complimented it, I have found they stare at you expectantly waiting for you to tell them!

So it's totally fine to do that Grin

damnilovejam · 07/11/2019 21:41

I have to have the volume on the TV and car stereo set to even numbers. No idea why, just makes me feel all weird if they're on odd numbers.

imaflutteringkite · 07/11/2019 21:41

I count too! Drive myself mad doing it but I can't stop. I have to count to 11 before I get out of bed in a morning.

damnilovejam · 07/11/2019 21:42

Just thought of another. Whenever I look in the mirror, I automatically give myself a big wide cheesy grin! No idea why and it's made me look like a loon in public bathrooms many, many times.

EssentialHummus · 07/11/2019 21:43

When DD was a newborn, she used to cry whenever we were on a particular street (the most direct route home). It’s two years on, I still avoid that street and take the long way home with her.

Mrsjayy · 07/11/2019 21:44

I always tell people what's in parcels too they are probably not that interested Grin

WonkyDonk87 · 07/11/2019 21:46

Random, innocuous movements of the body (touching teeth with my tongue, wriggling toes, stretching etc) must be done on both sides. Or it's all wonky and weird.

KenAdams · 07/11/2019 21:49

@cushioncovers me too! I go through meetings, strategies etc and come up with so many ideas! The shower seems to be the only place I can think clearly and rationally and focus my thoughts.

When DD was young (about 7 or so I think) she was moving her lips when she was reading and I asked her if seh was saying the word to herself and she said 'oh no I know the word, but I have to say the number' - turns out she mentally counted the number of letters in every word she read. For some reason this was important to her. She's grown up now and I don't think she still does it !

I always apologise for liking weak tea - and sort of mock myself for liking it so if someone asks I say ' I like it very weak and feeble I'm afraid - just show th water the tea bag - people always say my tea is awful hahaha' etc etc. No idea why I don't just say ' I like it weak please' insted of turning into a mad grovelling idiot.

mumwon · 07/11/2019 21:54

why when feeding a baby with a spoon full of food do you open your mouth?

frankie001 · 07/11/2019 21:55

I have the subtitles on when watching the tv.

If I have a dress with pockets, I will tell everyone I have a dress with pockets. I love a dress with pockets.

Whoatethechocorange · 07/11/2019 21:55

Tv/radio volume always on even numbers... DC/P sick of hearing 'mmmhm hmmm' when they get it wrong!!!

Minai · 07/11/2019 21:59

I can’t take the first thing on a shelf or rail in a shop, I have to take the one from behind. I do it because my mum does it. She does it because her mum did it. I’m assuming my children will carry on doing this ridiculous tradition Grin

jokerreturns · 07/11/2019 21:59

Does anyone else hear the words in their head being spoken as you read? Confused

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 07/11/2019 22:00

@Minai I do that too! Also inherited from my mum!

PinkKind · 07/11/2019 22:02

frankie001 Me tooooooooooo.. loveeee pockets in dresses!!
Have lots of solo conversations and always count stairs!!

blondestresshead · 07/11/2019 22:03

When I sit with my legs crossed I wiggle my toes of the top foot into shapes - usually a 5 pointed star, but sometimes triangles.

I do wonder occasionally what the people sitting either side of me think.....but I'm rarely aware that I'm doing it.

Dollymixture22 · 07/11/2019 22:05

I hear words in my head when I read - I though everyone did. I also hear every word I am typing here.

I say night night holly mixture to myself Out loud every night just before I go to sleep.

If I am tired or upset or in pain I whisper ‘I want to go home’ even if I am at home🙄😳

Times10 · 07/11/2019 22:10

Dolly I do the same, with I want to go home. I’m thinking that subconsciously my home doesn’t quite feel like home.

Every time I do the school run in the afternoon, I run through my to-do list in my head, which is basically, «pick up the DCs» «go home»...

Ohyesiam · 07/11/2019 22:11

@Candle1000 I count corners and sides. So a screen has 8, but each pair is connected, as a corner belongs to an edge.
Sometimes when I see a window with lots of little pains my heart sinks.Confused

Mollpop · 07/11/2019 22:11

I arrange the letters in individual words into alphabetical order in my head. Or arrange the words in a sentence into alphabetical order. I often talk out loud if I'm mulling over a difficult conversation.

babybythesea · 07/11/2019 22:13

Countrylife - yup, I do the word thing. And with signs. If I'm on the underground I'll be staring fixedly at the ads, trying to make as many words as I can out of the longest word on each sign before I reach the next stop. I must look weirdly absorbed by dietry supplements and legal firms.

Pavlova. Talk to myself too. Sometimes I also answer, pretending to be the other person. Sometimes I just leave gaps. I am particularly prone to it when driving (which doesn't matter) and dog walking. I have startled quite a few people (including myself) by walking round a corner chatting animatedly to find someone else coming the other way. Watch their eyes look for the person I'm talking to, realise I am alone, and watch them step away hurridly...

Jayneisagirlsname · 07/11/2019 22:13

I draw things with my fingertips in the air using tiny movements. So I might 'draw' the receptionist if I'm waiting at the drs. Each finger is a different colour and I have to use knuckles if there's too many. I have to keep going until I'm finished or I feel off kilter.

PS I'm truly awful at actual drawing!

79abbot · 07/11/2019 22:14

I am not very musical but I hum made-up tunes when I go to the supermarket.

Giraffecantdanse · 07/11/2019 22:14

I write lengthy posts to mumsnet iny head when I'm annoyed about something. I've never got around to posting them yet though.
