I was considering a visit to the GP to discuss HRT, after reading these responses I'm making an appointment!

CatUnderTheStairs · 07/11/2019 10:31

HRT hasn't caused weight gain. But even if it had i would still be taking g it. my marriage would have ended if I hadn't stopped the flushes. I was waking up 2 or 3 times in the night absolutely drenched and freezing cold. DH said it was like sharing a bed with a v bad tempered gollum.

GuppytheCat · 07/11/2019 10:34

'Dog cooking mat' made me proper snort! Thanks, Gilead.

Sforsh49 · 07/11/2019 10:37

High strength evening primrose oil, I stopped within a week of taking them. Didn't take them on holiday and in ten days they were back. Don't miss a dose now!! I'm sure they won't work forever and I'll need HRT at some point but for now, they're my saviour!

bellinisurge · 07/11/2019 10:37

Tried HRT. It exacerbated my MS fatigue. I was like a zombie. Feet out when it's too hot. Wet flannel on my head.
In winter I am simultaneously hot and cold. Which is special. Hmm

Gilead · 07/11/2019 11:53

Good job my dog can’t read Guppy!

Overseasmom100 · 07/11/2019 15:10

WOW - I hadnt even considered HRT because I dont get them in the daytime just at night I didnt think I was that serious. But the last 7 nights Ive woken up with baking heat all over my body.

I cant bare to sleep in anything I think I need a lighter tog quilt or a sheet as others suggest.

The heat from my body is crazy Im sure you could fry an egg on me Shock

My friend is on HRT been on it 2 months and the periods she's had have been horrific - I think I would rather stay with the hotness at night

I tried everything and the only thing that tempered them ( apart from HRT but I was allowed it only for one year) was a natural remedy called Remifemin.
Not totally but very very manageable. 2 per day. Wonderful stuff.

I do not know if you can find it in the UK...

sandandc · 07/11/2019 15:18

@Sforsh49...please,share which evening primrose you use.
I share your pain OP
@Sarcelle...what sage tablets are you using?

ThePittts · 07/11/2019 15:20

Flaxseed oil capsules and royal jelly capsules worked for me

Aquamarine1029 · 07/11/2019 15:34

Your friend is clearly using something that isn't working for her. HRT should stop the horrific periods.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/11/2019 15:41

Agree with Aquamarine1029, periods should be nice and regular (assuming she was still getting periods) a bit like when you're on the pill.
HRT for me has made my life liveable again. The daytime hot flushes, several times an hour, were unbearable they stopped within days of taking hrt.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 07/11/2019 15:42

And there is no link between gaining weight and HRT, there IS a link between peri menopause and gaining weight though.

CatUnderTheStairs · 07/11/2019 15:43

What @Aquamarine1029 says. I went on HRT because of flooding and awful periods. Had to try a couple till I found one that worked.

Honest to god, don't know where I'd be without it. Applaud those who can get by with herbal remedies....but I needed my oestrogen replaced. i was also quite young so wanted the added protection it gives against osteoporosis etc.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/11/2019 15:44

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

HRT for me has made my life liveable again.

Me too. It's been an absolute lifesaver.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 07/11/2019 15:45

Does anyone feel like they hate their DH at the moment - since I've been going through peri menopause I'm definitely grumpier, I'm not my usual laid back sort at all. Poor DH seems to be bearing the brunt of this and he's a really lovely man, doesn't deserve it all. Everything he does pisses me off.

Whatthingsexactly · 07/11/2019 16:11

Flappy fan under pillow (cheap one from amazon)
Touch on, touch off usb powered desk fan on bedside cabinet
Spray mist water bottle
Many layers of bedding
Window open
Hotty for freezing cold feet
Wrap for chilly shoulders that is quick to put on/throw off
Sympathetic bedfellow
Early nights and lie ins
Thin nightie

LlamaofDrama · 07/11/2019 16:14

Really interested to read this went to the dr to discuss it last week and am going to start HRT. Recommendation was mirena coil plus oestrogen so periods shouldn't be a problem. Apparently it's the oestrogen that can cause weight gain, which is a worry for me, but she hopes that by using patches it won't, as it won't go near my liver. We'll see... I'm waiting for then to call me back but it will be a while before I'm fully sorted as I'm going to try a couple of months of oestrogen before the coil is inserted to make the insertion easier.

MrHaroldFry · 07/11/2019 16:26

Transdermal HRT patches.
Saved my 47 year old sanity (and maybe even my marriage), it cleared my foggy thinking, it stopped insomnia and the wretched anxiety which had suddenly appeared.
I would certainly investigate if these are for you.

billy1966 · 07/11/2019 16:35

Sage tea made from raggedy old sage from the garden.
Very, very light duvet.
Starflower capsules from Holland and Barrett.
Window open at night.
Very cool bedroom.

CatUnderTheStairs · 07/11/2019 17:08

@BigSandyBalls2015 yep, we went through a patch where I could cheerfully have done in him with a frying pan. Again HRT helped with the permanent feeling of rage. Got those hormones back in place.

ChristmasFairy2019 · 07/11/2019 17:11

@LlamaofDrama The weight gain thing can be a bit of a myth. I've used hrt for years and never gained any weight at all, but at the same time I've cut back on portion size and practise 'clean eating ' (horrible phrase but you know what I mean) as we all need less food from middle age.

Sarcelle · 07/11/2019 18:41

@sandandc Menoforce are the sage ones I use. Took about a week to work, I have not had any flushes, day or night for almost a year now. I don't take HRT.

Sforsh49 · 07/11/2019 20:59

@sandandc just these from Holland & Barrett. I take two in the morning. Lady in the shop also recommended Starflower but I went with EP and it's worked for me! Tried lighter duvet, window open and everything but this is what worked for me
