Women in the public eye who do what they do *well*

There's many a thread popping up on MN basically just bashing women.

"Adele got thin, now she will be shit"
"Doesn't Tess Daly just have the kind if face you want to punch?"
Etc.

So I want us to talk about women in the public eye who do a fucking good job at whatever it is they are known for.

Olivia Colman Amazing actress, seems kind and happy. Picks great roles and plays them well. Doesn't court media attention.

Dawn O Porter writes great books about women who feel real. Situations that are normal and true and sometimes raw. Instagram stories the mad moments and doesn't do stuff for show.

Shakira - don't think much of her music but she seems to do some genuinely great charity work in Columbia that she is personally very involved with: www.insidephilanthropy.com/glitzy-giving/shakira

Adwoa Aboah - does some great advocacy for girls

Masie Williams - just seems like such a cool girl, and blazing a trail for actresses who aren't 'conventional pretty'

Blibbyblobby · 06/11/2019 18:47

Anne Boden. Heard her being interviewed and as a panel member, she really impressed me

redchocolatebutton · 06/11/2019 18:55

a bit controversial for sure: Sarah Huckabee Sanders
she was bloody brilliant at her job at the white house

Hereitisnow · 06/11/2019 18:55

Angela Merkel

RoomR0613 · 06/11/2019 19:35

this is making me slightly tearful.

So many great women, so little recognition.

I would like to add Maggie Thatcher, hated her politics but as a woman she achieved so much in terms of showing that dusty old white men weren't the only ones capable of being strong in politics.

Ann Diamond, for SIDS awareness

The many unrecognised women of Bletchley Park whose code breaking skills were seen as just 'admin'.

EdWinchester · 06/11/2019 19:35

I actually bloody love Vanessa Feltz-

Me too. She’s brilliant.

ImperfectTents · 06/11/2019 19:47

Michelle Obama ,such grace under enormous stress and the work she does with young adults

It’s a great thread, isn’t it?

I, too, considered listing Maggie earlier but then remembered that I hated her guts. I was being silly. She fully deserves to be here: first female PM, she won three consecutive elections and was a tough negotiator. I’m pretty sure she’d have sorted Brexit out!

Holly Willoughby - much maligned on here but is excellent at her job, always seems so natural and relaxed when presenting. Also does well to protect her children’s identities when so many other celebrities display their kids on the front page of OK.

Merkel, May and Thatcher.

Totally disagree with most of their politics, but all are amazing strong women. Putting up with shite no man would have to.

Iamthewombat · 06/11/2019 22:45

Has anybody said Lady Hale yet?

Lady Hale! In spades.

Paddy1234 · 06/11/2019 22:56

Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, Jen Majura, Sharon den Adel, Tarja Turunen, Anette Olzon, Floor Jensen, Simone Simmons and Cristina Scabbia, for holding their own in the rock/metal scene and for having amazing talent. They get stick from the kind of idiots who don't think women should be in metal (those people are wrong and stupid,) or for doing things like taking time off for having kids. Or they're criticised for being 'fat' or not looking like they did in their 20s. Angry

Lindsay Stirling is amazing too, and kinda crosses into that territory with her work with Lzzy, Amy and Evanescence. She's amazingly talented too (and gets criticism for the most stupid of things, like wearing a dress.)

I love Angela Merkel, she's like the grown up in the room!

BelfastNonBlonde · 07/11/2019 02:57

Another one for Vanesa Feltz!

Nicola Adams , Jennifer Aniston, Late Middleton, to name but a few.

They have grace.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 07/11/2019 23:36

Oh I am loving these. I hate women hating on women and yes to all!!

I’ll get disagreements , but I’d like to add Cressida Dick . Far and away the best boss I’ve ever worked for , and the only one in recent years who actually gives a shit about her troops, and has been brave enough to take on the government in public .
