Women in the public eye who do what they do *well*

There's many a thread popping up on MN basically just bashing women.

"Adele got thin, now she will be shit"
"Doesn't Tess Daly just have the kind if face you want to punch?"
Etc.

So I want us to talk about women in the public eye who do a fucking good job at whatever it is they are known for.

Olivia Colman Amazing actress, seems kind and happy. Picks great roles and plays them well. Doesn't court media attention.

Dawn O Porter writes great books about women who feel real. Situations that are normal and true and sometimes raw. Instagram stories the mad moments and doesn't do stuff for show.

Steph McGovern and Mary Portas.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 07:39

But if we can say these things about men, why not about women too?

At least give it a couple of pages in, before you start with the poor men nonsense! This thread is about women and it would be nice if we actually had a discussion about females without trying to bring men into it, FFS.

Pinkarsedfly · 06/11/2019 07:44

I actually bloody love Vanessa Feltz. She’s so funny and quick witted, and I think it’s fantastic that she ended up with the incredibly hot personal trainer she employed after her husband left her Grin

I also like Mary Beard, Laura Kuensberg, Sandi Toksvig, Emily Maitlis, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Jodie Whittaker, Maxine Peake, Jo Whiley, Sara Cox...so many brilliant women out there.

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 07:49

Olivia Colman annoys me. At the Oscars... Hmm

Can’t we just have a nice thread recognising admirable women without Also using it to do even more women-bashing?
The is the very last place that this is appropriate! Angry

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 08:20

Couldn’t agree more CockleburIck. It’s as if some internal misogynistic alarm kicks in and we have to make sure we even things up, by slating other women.

I’m going to be controversial here but I have a secret bit of admiration for Theresa May. I will never vote for her party and wouldn’t agree with her policies, but the sexist crap she dealt with from the papers that no man would be expected to would break many people. Plus whether or not I agreed with her I believe she genuinely wanted what was best for the uk and NI. goes of to hide

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 08:21

Excuse the spelling mistakes. goes to get coffee

Fatshedra · 06/11/2019 08:25

Yes, Victoria Coren-Michell is great.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 06/11/2019 08:30

Every single feminist that stands up for females and refuse to centre people born Male. The abuse they take in their public and private life msg be horrific. I don’t care if they don’t like each other and I may not agree with every single thing they do, but fuck it those women have ovaries of steel. 🥇

ControversialFerret · 06/11/2019 08:33

I love Olivia Colman - brilliant actress.

Vanessa Feltz is incredibly sharp and intelligent. Her wordplay and vocabulary are amazing.

I'm not her number one fan, but I have huge respect for Diane Abbott. Her accomplishments as a WOC in politics are immense and the abuse she gets is absolutely vile.

Sarah Lancashire used to irritate the tits off me - until I saw her in Happy Valley. Am a complete convert now.

Megan Murphy - gets an insane amount of abuse thrown at her, huge untruths published to trash her reputation, threats to her safety and yet she keeps on rolling.

Iamthewombat · 06/11/2019 08:52

Christine Lagarde. Nancy Pelosi. And, yes, Theresa May. Graceful under pressure.

redchocolatebutton · 06/11/2019 08:58

gina miller

GrandmaMazur · 06/11/2019 09:37

I love Vanessa Feltz too - have listened to her morning show on London Radio for years. I might not agree with everything she says but she's incredibly articulate and empathetic to her callers.

I think Roisin Conaty is hilarious and Gameface, the comedy she wrote and stars in, is massively underrated.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/11/2019 09:43

I like Vanessa Feltz too, the only time I listen to Jeremy Vine on R2 is when she stands in for him. She's very clever, wonderfully articulate and fun.

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 09:57

Baroness Hale.

JaneJeffer · 06/11/2019 09:57

Can't we say what we want without other women bashing us for it?

ChubRubTub · 06/11/2019 10:01

Hadley Freeman

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 10:01

Sure, so start your own bitching thread then, JaneJeffer. This is a thread about women who do what they do well.

JaneJeffer · 06/11/2019 10:03

There you go telling other women what to do. And I didn't bitch about anyone. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

LittleTopic · 06/11/2019 10:05

@MrGsFancyNewVagina I agree with you!

I think she was treated appallingly by male MPs who aren’t dating to do the same to Johnson. Wonder why Hmm

LittleTopic · 06/11/2019 10:05

Daring, not dating Grin

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 10:08

How the hell was I being hypocritical (or, indeed, "bashing" anyone) for pointing out that a thread celebrating admirable women was not the place to make derogatory comments about women?

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 10:12

And suggesting you start your own thread was in response to your desire to express something other than the point of this one!

Kinley · 06/11/2019 10:29

I agree with cockle! This, as I thought it would, just turned straight into a bitch fest. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

formerbabe · 06/11/2019 10:32

I also love Vanessa Feltz, she's fab! I also agree with a pp about Theresa May.

I also think the Duchess of Cambridge performs her role with perfection.

MarshaBradyo · 06/11/2019 10:34

Love seeing Hadley Freeman on here agree
