Women in the public eye who do what they do *well*

There's many a thread popping up on MN basically just bashing women.

"Adele got thin, now she will be shit"
"Doesn't Tess Daly just have the kind if face you want to punch?"
Etc.

So I want us to talk about women in the public eye who do a fucking good job at whatever it is they are known for.

Olivia Colman Amazing actress, seems kind and happy. Picks great roles and plays them well. Doesn't court media attention.

Dawn O Porter writes great books about women who feel real. Situations that are normal and true and sometimes raw. Instagram stories the mad moments and doesn't do stuff for show.

Massive eye roll at the almost instant bashing and the "whataboutmen"ers. FFS.

Samira Ahmed - I think she's a fantastic and insightful interviewer, and I'm even more impressed with her taking a stance on equal pay at the BBC. Her podcast is great.

I had a lot of time for Deborah Orr. I was sad to hear of her recent death.

Oooh and Vanessa Feltz is brilliant. So smart and honest

GuppytheCat · 06/11/2019 12:18

I'm going to add Justine Roberts to your list.

I don't think she quite knew what she was letting herself in for all those years back.

I love all of them, and imagine a dinner party with all those [sigh]

More ordinarily, my boss is in the public eye, and she absolutely rocks. She is so supportive of her staff, always has my back, and genuinely makes me feel valued and needed.

BoomyBooms · 06/11/2019 13:03

Debra Frances White - brilliantly hilarious and intelligent comedian and feminist, fantastic motivational speaker

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/11/2019 13:07

Vicki Young on the BBC. Love her to bits. Calm, humorous, clearly adores her job, manages to explain political intricacies with ease.

Katya Adler, as already mentioned.

Kate Adie, though she’s not longer on TV. What an amazing woman. I interviewed her once and she blew me away. Razor sharp mind, told some incredible stories.

elsaandanna · 06/11/2019 13:07

Carrie Gracie.

JacquesHammer · 06/11/2019 13:09

Olivia Coleman is wonderful.
Anna Maxwell Martin is a fabulous actress.
Laura Kuenssberg is excellent.
Lucy Worsley is brilliant
Gina Miller is incredibly stalwart
Emily Scarratt - superb rugby player
Martina Navratilova, Sharon Davies for their comments on transwomen in sport.

evilharpy · 06/11/2019 13:12

I love Claire Balding.

Meghan Markle - whether you love her or hate her - is amazing at public speaking.

Princess Eugenie (Beatrice also seems lovely but I know more about Eugenie's charity work and personality on Instagram)

Theknacktoflying · 06/11/2019 13:36

Most women in the public eye or fall under the barrels of the misogynist newspapers do a good job ....

CockleburIck · 06/11/2019 14:12

True, TheNack they must have ovaries of steel to choose to stay in the public eye with the inevitable sexism, criticism of their appearance (even if irrelevant to their position) and denigration of their talents that will follow. Who has escaped it?

And, it’s not just from the tabloids or men.

wheresmymojo · 06/11/2019 14:47

Jameela Jamil.

She is such a modern day champion for not only womens' rights, but human dignity and respect for everyone.

BoogleMcGroogle · 06/11/2019 16:20

Ester Duflo- second female winner of the Nobel prize for economics. Or as one rag put its 'economist and wife win Nobel prize'

My two friends who are university professors who both go out of their way to support emerging female academics ( one in the guy heavy field of material sciences).

And in the UK we have so many amazing women writers, with special credit to Bernadine Everisto who shared the Booker prize with Margaret Atwood. And the awesome performance poet Hollie McNish.

Our parish vicar, who has one helluva backstory.

I could go on. There are so many brilliant and inspiring women out there today.
