We are just watching pointless and Anne diamond is on. My daughter asked who she was and I explained that she was a tv presenter, who was famous back in the day. I then remembered that she was the one who Lost her baby to SIDS and gave us the advice to put babies on their backs.DD currently cuddling her new son and is almost not believing me that babies were swaddled, put on their tummies and made sure they were warm. I know that there are still babies that die on their backs, and no matter what you do this awful thing still happens. I’m surprised this woman isn’t revered for what she did. Does anyone know if there are other reasons she hasn’t been officially recognized for what she did?

She really deserves recognition for her campaign. My DD was born in 1985 and looking back I feel so lucky she was ok despite the advice at the time being to put babies on their fronts to sleep. She had respiratory distress when she was born slightly premature and was in NICU for two weeks. She had severe reflux and was perpetually vomiting or positing. For the first 6 months or so her lips would go blue when she was having her bottles. There must have been so many babies like her who maybe were at more risk of SIDS who ended up as a terrible statistic of the result of front sleeping. Anne Diamond was driven by the unimaginable loss of Sebastian to do whatever she could to prevent other families having to go through the same. Bless her heart. I’d definitely sign a petition for her to be given an MBE or whatever.

Can we have a one off Mumsnet award for services to babies?
Mother of a generation?

Reallybadidea · 04/11/2019 09:00

Does Mumsnet make awards? They should do!

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2019 09:01

I have a picture in my head that will be there forever of her partner carrying a little white coffin.

TheQueef · 04/11/2019 09:49

I'm tempted to start a thread a day campaign until one of you clever lot come up with some way we can show our gratitude.

If you are old enough to remember it needs no explanation but as PP have mentioned the babies she saved are now having their own babies and keeping them safer as a result of her campaign.
Not a medic or scientist.
Just an extraordinary Woman.

HebeMumsnet · 04/11/2019 10:16

Morning, everyone. Thanks to the reporter who drew our attention to this thread. We agree, Anne Diamond definitely deserves more recognition for the thousands of babies' lives her campaign must have saved over the years.

We unfortunately don't have a hotline to whoever puts honours lists together (though we'd quite like one, if you're reading, Your Maj! Wink). But we thought a good start might be if we Tweet about this thread and see if we can get some more interest going in the idea.

We'll tweet a link shortly. Thanks again!

Sotiredbutcannotsleep · 04/11/2019 10:20

I was a young child when this happened (it was so horrific & with her being so well known). I still remember her advice to this day.

TheQueef · 04/11/2019 10:46

Running scared Hebe?
Don't blame you, no one needs to read my waffle daily.

Let's make Anne a Dame! or republican equivalent

HebeMumsnet · 04/11/2019 10:49

Haha @TheQueef! No, please do carry on with the daily Tweets! The more the better!

VenusClapTrap · 04/11/2019 11:06

My own mother was one of the naysayers. I have no idea why; I was a child. But for some reason she couldn’t stand Anne Diamond, calling her a ‘moaning minnie’ and complaining about her ‘going on and on about that baby’. She even went as far as changing the channel when she came on the telly. Looking back it’s really weird. I do wonder now if it was triggering something I never knew about. Mind you, she was a woman with strong opinions and could be a touch irrational, so perhaps she just thought it was all too much for breakfast TV or something.

Whattodoabout · 04/11/2019 11:12

Brilliant woman, she definitely deserves far more recognition.

kissmelittleass · 04/11/2019 12:09

Aww if Anne gets to see this thread she will feel the love 💕

TheQueef · 04/11/2019 18:28

Have Clarence House been on the phone yet?
They must not have my number.....

BertrandRussell · 04/11/2019 18:32

I can only assume that she must have turned down an honour.

IHaveBrilloHair · 04/11/2019 19:01

What makes you think that?

Quirrelsotherface · 04/11/2019 19:06

I love Anne Diamond - a knowledgeable, relatable, warm and really genuine woman. Been through the worst that life could ever throw at her and yet comes across as so calm and balanced. Why she is not on primetime ITV or BBC when they're giving us the god awful Lorraine Kelly or Holly Willoughby I do not know.

SunshineCake · 04/11/2019 21:13

Anne for Strictly 2020 so we can show our gratitude by voting for her every week.

RowanMumsnet · 06/11/2019 11:42

@BertrandRussell

I can only assume that she must have turned down an honour.

Well - this news just in: Anne replied to our Tweet about this and said:

"I’ve not turned down an honour - never been offered. Not even a thankyou letter from no10. Despite it being the SINGLE MOST SUCESSFUL HEALTH CAMPAIGN EVER! (Govt own stats) if they ever offered me an honour now, what should I do? Tell them where to stick it? Or accept and bow?"

Which seems like a good question...

misspiggy19 · 06/11/2019 11:51

Kudos to Mothercare-

I made my own TV ad, and with money from Mothercare we showed it in the Coronation Street ad break. We could only afford one showing, but it worked.

Flipping heck. I'm astonished. Not even a thank you letter!

Peridot1 · 06/11/2019 12:09

Sadly @OhDeari there have been MNers whose babies died from cot death. One very recently in fact. And not just new borns or very little babies. Toddlers too. Thankfully it is much less common and yes that is hugely due to Anne Diamond and her campaign.

I can’t believe she hasn’t been honoured either.

I watched her interview someone I know whose daughter died and they had donated organs and she was so empathetic.

TheQueef · 06/11/2019 15:15

I knew it.
Mealy mouthed, pompous, patriarchal knobs.
Anne committed the exclusively female crime of getting a bit fat Angry

I hope she will accept if they offer, ignore the bloody aristo connections, we want her acknowledged for the massive impact she had in saving babies.
What's the biggest one? Knighthood?

marvellousnightforamooncup · 06/11/2019 15:31

She definitely needs an honour, I've thought that for years. Although you have to be a wife beating cricketer or something equally important for that kind of thing.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2019 15:36

Fuck me, that’s shocking. Here’s hoping she’s offered one now so she can publicly turn it down......Angry

TartanTexan · 06/11/2019 15:37

She’s amazing, I worked with her on something & she’s razor sharp, warm and kind. Really took genuine interest in something close to my heart. She’s fantastic!
