We are just watching pointless and Anne diamond is on. My daughter asked who she was and I explained that she was a tv presenter, who was famous back in the day. I then remembered that she was the one who Lost her baby to SIDS and gave us the advice to put babies on their backs.DD currently cuddling her new son and is almost not believing me that babies were swaddled, put on their tummies and made sure they were warm. I know that there are still babies that die on their backs, and no matter what you do this awful thing still happens. I’m surprised this woman isn’t revered for what she did. Does anyone know if there are other reasons she hasn’t been officially recognized for what she did?

Sorry that was unnecessary I'll report myself.

SunshineCake · 02/11/2019 20:20

Bloody hell

Your phrasing is all, wrong, TheQueef even if what you said wasn't horrible.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 02/11/2019 20:27

I seem to remember there was some backlash at the time. As mentioned upthread the standard advice then was to put babies on their sides “in case they vomited”. I think there was concern that the back to sleep campaign was dangerous nonsense.

The data suggests otherwise.

Brave lady for carrying on against the naysayers.

TheQueef · 02/11/2019 20:29

I know Sunshine it was knee jerk.
She only did it cos she's on the telly etc winds me up.
No.
She could only do it because she lost her son, her child died.

Lardlizard · 02/11/2019 20:32

She is an amazing woman
What’s the highest honour the queen can give ? Mbe?

Give Anne diamond one of these right now please

Genevieva · 02/11/2019 20:33

She should have a CBE at minimum. Perhaps even be made a Dame. I can't help feeling that what are sometimes deemed feminine issues get sidelined.

I think anyone can make a recommendation for an honour.

EvilEdna1 · 02/11/2019 20:34

Some of that fall in SIDS is due to less smoking in pregnancy and around babies though. It's the biggest single risk factor.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 02/11/2019 20:36

She could be a Dame.

Dame Anne Diamond would be amazing.

SchadenfiendeUnmortified · 02/11/2019 20:37

I think feelings about her became negative when i turned out that her impressive weight loss wasn't solely due to diet and exercise as she had claimed, but to the fact that she'd had her stomach stapled/ reduced/ whatever. She'd sold a shitload of exercise DVDs and people claimed she was ripping off her fans.

Nothing to do with her SIDS work, but mud sticks.

mommybear1 · 02/11/2019 20:46

I think she is an amazing lady to turn that horrific experience into a positive by saving so many lives is just remarkable I don't care that she lied about her weight loss (who doesn't 🤷🏻‍♀️maybe not to that extreme but still) her tireless efforts can not be overshadowed by that.

Loveislandaddict · 02/11/2019 20:54

Dame Anne Diamond does sound good.

OverByYer · 02/11/2019 20:57

I’m so shocked that she has never been honoured as she is inextricably linked to the back to sleep campaign. So many lives must have been saved thanks to her

derxa · 02/11/2019 21:02

Well done Anne.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/11/2019 21:04

Her.former co host, Nick Owen, is patron of a charity that supports pregnant women and new mums too (Baby Lifeline). He and Anne Diamond promoted this charity when it formed.

OhTheRoses · 02/11/2019 21:07

She's great. What's not so great is that so.many hcps got away with giving shot advice for so long.

Lilymossflower · 02/11/2019 21:20

Bloody patriarchy hiding women and women's voices

I didnt even know about her untill this post

Great woman

lborgia · 02/11/2019 21:23

I really don’t care about any of the “mud”, how the hell was being a tv presenter a privileged position for someone who lost their baby? SHE turned it into a positive, and for anyone else in that situation they’d be considered an absolute saint for carrying on and working so hard in that position (as some less known women have done). Maybe now, with some distance, she would consider collecting an honour, it made such a difference to the statistics. I know the professor should also be recognised, but to a certain extent, that was the job he choose to do, he didn’t lose a child and then persevere with getting the news out there. I’ll also point out that the decrease in smoking around children cannot possibly be responsible for the dramatic change over just 3-4 years, and it is very po-faced to try and take this away from her. She paid for experts to come and talk to the government from overseas, she went looking for answers when people were still saying to her “it’s just one of those things”. Very easy to dismiss her contribution when you haven’t experienced that kind of loss. I’d sign a petition (as you might’ve guessed).

TheMistressQuickly · 02/11/2019 21:23

Why give her Honours? It’s a load of nonsense and won’t bring her son back. Does she even want it? I wouldn’t in the circumstances...

augustusglupe · 02/11/2019 21:29

Always liked her and I like her being back on the tele more.
Yes to Dame Anne Diamond!!

ForalltheSaints · 02/11/2019 21:30

Thank you OP for reminding us of Anne Diamond's campaign. Just think that there are people in their 20s who might not be alive today were it not for the campaign, not that we will ever know who they are.

NoSauce · 02/11/2019 21:34

I was really upset when she lost her little boy, Sebastian. I remember her fondly talking about “Supi” their nn for him. Just so terribly sad.

littlecabbage · 02/11/2019 21:40

Thank you for bringing this up. I knew that she had lost her baby to SIDS, but I didn’t realise how she had campaigned afterwards (I was a child when this awful tragedy happened). I am in awe of her ability to do this after having the worst experience anyone could have.

Thank you Anne. I have children of my own now, and I am so grateful to you for getting the advice changed.

I will always remember that your baby son was called Sebastian.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 02/11/2019 21:42

I remember her campaign vividly. I was 10. My Mum talked about it a great deal. I had younger sisters of 4 and newborn so obviously it was an issue close to her heart. Also a teacher at school lost a child to SIDS around the same time.
I don't think it really struck me how painful it must have been for her and her family until I became a mother myself.
