We are just watching pointless and Anne diamond is on. My daughter asked who she was and I explained that she was a tv presenter, who was famous back in the day. I then remembered that she was the one who Lost her baby to SIDS and gave us the advice to put babies on their backs.DD currently cuddling her new son and is almost not believing me that babies were swaddled, put on their tummies and made sure they were warm. I know that there are still babies that die on their backs, and no matter what you do this awful thing still happens. I’m surprised this woman isn’t revered for what she did. Does anyone know if there are other reasons she hasn’t been officially recognized for what she did?

Thanks prefects.

I believe my younger sister's generation were put on their backs. She's 35.

I can't say that I remember her speaking at the time as it's so long ago.

My dd was put on her back and I feel a little uncomfortable sometimes reading info from other Moms to Moms on here about putting on tummy if reflux, co-sleeping (yikes!) etc. But I keep my nose firmly out.

There is one thing I'll add though. Those hanging over the bed sort of chime things? My mother outlawed one of those. For a very painful and good reason - our neighbour when I was too young to remember had one fall on her son in his cot and he strangled to death on the strings of it. Apparently the whole family was investigated ie. dad and mum, but it was found that the thing literally had collapsed into his cot.

Dowser · 02/11/2019 23:16

The rules are when you put a celeb name in the title is
You add is not dead ..if they aren’t.

Right, glad I’ve cleared that up 😂

OhDeari · 02/11/2019 23:18

And thankfully, I've never read about a cot death on MN. I hope that's because all the babies are safe.

OhDeari · 02/11/2019 23:20

Dowser - that there was no RIP might have been an indication.
This isn't really a light-hearted subject for some.

kissmelittleass · 02/11/2019 23:50

Absolutely agree I love Anne Diamond and she definitely should of been awarded for all the lives she saved because of her campaign. I remember her constantly on the television back in the day talking and advising about cot death. Miss seeing her on the tele too.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 02/11/2019 23:53

Can i ask a delicate question for those that might know more about the research on this?
Is there any breakdown of the 200 SIDS related deaths in 2017 which shows which (if any) of them were following all the SIDS advice, and which were not (ie around smokers, sleeping on their fronts etc)?
I am due dd2 in the next few weeks and my deep terror of this that i felt for the first year of dd1’s life is definitely coming back/

OhDeari · 03/11/2019 00:46

Rub I doubt that anyone but the execs concerned have access to the breakdowns

lborgia · 03/11/2019 05:59

Rub, I can’t give you specific breakdowns, but be reassured, of the number that still happen, I was told that the majority still have obvious issues, smoking, drugs, not following co-sleeping guidelines, involved. This was a doctor who’s job it was to find out what had happened in such situations. Please try not to worry. Just following all the obvious guidelines makes such a difference. Flowers

It doesn't have to be a gong (if it doesn't sit right)
A lifetime achievement award or one that is created specifically.
And thank you Lborg well said. What I wanted to say but fizzed instead Blush

bananasandwicheseveryday · 03/11/2019 07:41

My own dcs were born just before and just after this. DC1 would not sleep on their front (as per advice at the time) and I was constantly being told off in hospital because I put them on their back to sleep. By the time DC2 came along, the advice was changing and I was encouraged to put them on their back to sleep. Such a change in attitude in just a couple of years. I have no doubt that Peter Fleming's painstaking and compelling research would have ultimately led to the change of advice, however, as a well known and liked personality with the sad personal experience of this dreadful situation, Anne Diamond was in a position to be able to get the message across very quickly, to a wide audience who felt she was like them, not a remote academic preaching from their ivory tower.
Rather than an award ro her personally, an award in her name, or Sebastian's name, for those who contribute to understanding SIDS and who help to promote fewer instances? A bit like a Nobel prize specifically for SIDS?

velocitygirl7 · 03/11/2019 07:54

I agree she's amazing but don't forget many people don't want to be 'honoured' by the queen and turn it down, maybe she's one of those?

Oblomov19 · 03/11/2019 08:01

The fact she hasn't been honoured is shameful.

Blossie0 · 03/11/2019 08:23

I asked my own mother the same thing when watching last night. I didn't know about the SIDS, she really does deserve some more recognition.

Ginger1982 · 03/11/2019 08:26

Love this!

(Also slightly depressed there are folk out there old enough to be having kids yet young enough not to know who Anne Diamond is! 😆)

Oblomov19 · 03/11/2019 09:50

Sally Clarke case : 'miscarriage of justice' gets my goat aswell! Angry

veryboredtoday · 03/11/2019 11:29

What a lovely thread. I'd forgotten about the work Anne Diamond did but I remember hearing when she lost her son. I hope she reads this thread and sees so many people recognising the enormous influence she had following her tragedy.

DriftingLeaves · 03/11/2019 11:32

Always loved Anne from when she did the Midlands news with Nick. Wonderful woman.

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/11/2019 11:40

Thank you Anne Diamond. The difference you’ve made to so many lives is incredible.

TheQueef · 03/11/2019 11:52

What title without get HRHLiz involved could we nominate Anne for?

EleanorReally · 03/11/2019 11:58

my ds was born 25 years ago, i had just come home from hospital and my midwife was still visiting, so within the 10 days,
she came tearing round asking if i had seen panorama, all about the New mattresses, i had a second hand moses basket but had a new mattress.
frightening times.

WeshMaGueule · 03/11/2019 13:19

I wouldn't be surprised to hear she's been offered an honour and turned it down discreelty. Lots of people do, not everyone wants honours from the queen.

SunshineCake · 03/11/2019 20:03

Couldn't give a toss. about the stomach losing weight dvd stuff. Compared to saving lives it really doesn't matter if she was not fully admitting to help in weight loss.

AntiHop · 03/11/2019 20:09

She has a special place in my heart.
