Is cottage cheese as vile as it looks?

I'm trying to cook healthier, cheaper meals and I've come across a few recipes calling for cottage cheese as it supposedly tastes lovely at a fraction of the fat of regular cheese. I've never had it because quite frankly it looks disgusting and is reminiscent of a rampant vaginal infection 🙈

Is it as bad as it looks? And if so, how can I get past how much it grosses me out?

For background, I once tried quark in good faith and haven't been able to look at it without feeling nauseous since.

High protein and high levels of B vitamins, selenium, calcium and phosphorus

PickAChew · 01/11/2019 15:18

Bad cottage cheese is grainy and revolting but the nice stuff is delicious.

Sadly, I can't eat any of it.

Grumpbum123 · 01/11/2019 15:21

I like it with pineapple, black pepper and a bit of salad cream!

It’s rancid

TheNestedIf · 01/11/2019 15:36

All the more for me. Grin

I just wanted to add, for comparison, quark is more towards the yoghurt end of the spectrum where as cottage cheese is a bit cheesier, although seriously do not expect anything like cheddar.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/11/2019 15:37

I rather like it in a baked potato. It’s not horrible at all - I always thought it was as it was what mum used to have when she was on a diet (on ryvita).

queenofarles · 01/11/2019 15:37

the Best cheese for lasagne imo, is a mixture of goat cheese , ricotta, Parmesan and Buffalo Mozzarella.

DameSylvieKrin · 01/11/2019 15:41

If you don’t think of it as cheese it tastes a lot better. I like it on wholemeal toast with avocado.

BillywigSting · 01/11/2019 15:41

It's not as bad as it looks no.

It's much much worse.

Love cottage cheese

FairyJuice · 01/11/2019 20:24

Ooh it's a divisive topic isn't it!

I love it. But only Longley Farm which is creamy and still low calorie. I have half a large tub on four Ryvitas for lunch often.

Sharptic · 01/11/2019 20:27

I love it, but not as a substitute for cheese though really. Can eat a whole tub with ryvita and cucumber/tomato (defeats the object of healthy eating)

It needs to be the full fat version, fat free/low far versions don't even compare

Sharptic · 01/11/2019 20:29

Yes as pp said, Langley Farm version is good

RoomR0613 · 01/11/2019 20:34

It's absolutely rank in all forms apart from the Longley Farm one which is a food of the gods.

The Longley Farm one is a bit like a mousse of not very salty feta.

I thought I liked cottage cheese after a lifetime of only ever eating Longley Farm, then I moved south and realised not all cottage cheeses are created equal.

beckyvardy · 01/11/2019 20:37

I like it.

Do not put it in lasagne.

I did this for a slimming world recipe it was rank af

Slapdasherie · 01/11/2019 20:39

Albino vomit

DontCallMeShitley · 01/11/2019 20:39

Cottage cheese was always classed as low fat. Then the low fat everything trend started so there were options in the shops.

I have tried to like it many times, but can only take a small amount at a time, preferably with pineapple otherwise avoid it.

justasking111 · 01/11/2019 20:44

I love it with salad cream stirred in, really do not like it plain. You could stir in sweet chilli sauce or whatever condiment floats your boat. I would never cook with it.

ExpletiveDEVILighted · 01/11/2019 20:45

Ooh yes, its nice with salad cream

beckyvardy · 01/11/2019 20:50

It's nice mixed with tuna and now I want to get some to mix it with salad cream!

Mammyloveswine · 01/11/2019 20:52

Quark is much better for cooking!

DramaAlpaca · 01/11/2019 20:54

Yes. Cottage cheese most definitely is as vile as it looks. It's the texture, it's nasty, all lumpy & gritty. Eurgh.

SouthWestmom · 01/11/2019 20:59

I once started a Longley Farm appreciation thread on here. Bets ever cottage cheese. Sadly am now vegan.

ceebeejeebies · 01/11/2019 21:06

I love cottage cheese on buttered toast. Everyone I've ever eaten it in front of thinks I'm completely weird but it's one of my favourite breakfasts.
