Second Hand Pram for First baby

georgia19ox · 30/10/2019 11:01

I have very kindly been given a Bugaboo Pram- I didn’t really want a second-hand pram for my first baby for the main reason i wanted to be able to go on a big shopping tip and myself and my DP were saving up to buy things after Christmas. My mum was the one who had Expected the gift from a family friend and now i feel like i have to have it.. i suppose what im asking is has anyone else had a second-hand pram for their first baby?

Yes we did. More money to spend on something else.

Spied · 30/10/2019 11:06

We had sils silver cross that she used for her DD 18months earlier.
It was exactly the style/colour/brand we would have been buying anyway.
If it's in good condition I see no problem although I did feel happier knowing it was from family and who's pram it had been- if that makes sense.

We had a second hand travel system for our first baby. And a different second hand one for the second.

Picking your own is lovely, but the price of them, particularly bugaboos, is pretty high. In my mind being able to pick your own comes no where near the value!

I can hardly remember any items for my first baby that were not lent to me or second hand. It's fine. Lots of equipment for very young babies doesn't get much wear and tear at all, so save the cash for later on.

Some of us have no choice Hmm and a bugaboo is hardly a bad choice for a second hand pram! We had a second hand bugaboo cameleon for dd1, it was absolutely fantastic. It broke after 20-odd months sadly though by that point it had been used most days for 5 years or so, but I loved it so much that we got one for dd2 as well (an ex display one this time) and used it for my big 2yo dd1 whilst I was still pregnant.

Witchend · 30/10/2019 11:11

No wasn't second hand... More like 7th or 8th hand at least.
I had a 25 year old Silver Cross Wayfarer.
It was lovely and comfortable for the baby, and when I had dc2 & dc3 they could ride on it by standing on the frame.

LeeMiller · 30/10/2019 11:12

Honestly, until the baby is here you won't really know what suits you both anyway - if the bugaboo really doesn't fit your needs you can change it then. Mine wasn't keen on the carrycot and preferred the sling so the pram got little use, and now DS is older we mostly use a super lightweight 6 months plus one or a carrier, so the pram we originally chose had had little use.

I'd be grateful you have more cash to spend on carseats, clothes, cot etc. I am happy to use second-hand baby stuff though (with the exception of things where it's a safety issue), though I agree it's nice to choose a few special bits.

greypetex · 30/10/2019 11:15

There is nothing wrong with having second hand, however having second hand because someone else has chosen it and landed you with it is not ok.

LolaSmiles · 30/10/2019 11:15

I'd absolutely accept it.
The idea of turning down a perfectly good pram in order to go on a big shopping trip seems ludicrous to me.

The only time I wouldn't accept it is if it's not what I was after (eg. More bulky uppababy vista if I knew I was going to he doing lots of bus travel).

GrumpyHoonMain · 30/10/2019 11:17

It would depend on the condition for me (and if a replacement mattress is still available) as I want to use the carrycot for day sleeping. For this pregnancy I opted for a new pram

Hollachica · 30/10/2019 11:19

Why don't you see what condition it is in. Give it a good clean. Bugaboo are very expensive. If you still don't want it then go ahead and buy the one you want.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 30/10/2019 11:20

Started with a 2nd hand silver cross travel system, that worked great for the first three months, then as DD got a bit bigger we wanted something a bit more outdoorsy, sold the travel system on and got a BOB off-roader. Then with dd2 we bought a layflat attachment so for the BOB. Worked great. You don't really know what will suit you until the baby is here, and what suits a new born might not work for you at 6 months anyway.

A bugaboo is a really good, really expensive bit of kit. If it's an good condition, you'd be mad not to have it. Save your money for other things, there will be plenty!

katmarie · 30/10/2019 11:22

We got a second hand graco quattro travel system for ds, and are now using it for DD as well. It's been amazing, lasted really well, and suited ds right up to walking, we expect it will do the same for dd. to have bought the same thing would have cost us a fortune, we paid £20 and put the money to other stuff.

Robs20 · 30/10/2019 11:23

I had exactly the same feeling! I was given a red quinny pram and felt so upset that I missed out on going pram shopping. Dd was then born seriously ill and we had to buy a different pram to hold all of the medical equipment.....that made me realise how irrational I had been (I blame pregnancy hormones!!) and wish I could have used the red pram...

EssentialHummus · 30/10/2019 11:25

My biggest regret with baby shopping was not getting a second hand pram. Seriously, just use it and if it doesn't fit your needs in future reassess.

SpiderCharlotte · 30/10/2019 11:26

I totally understand you wanting a new pram for your first baby, but honestly, I would see what condition it's in - it might have been hardly used. You don't have to accept it if you don't want it, certainly don't feel obliged to, but second hand could free up money for something else?

JustAnotherMammi · 30/10/2019 11:26

Yes we did. Nothing wrong with it, just buy a new mattress.

For our 3rd baby we have an ex-display, but I was looking for secondhand on eBay and came across it for about same price as some secondhand ones! Our car pushchair is secondhand, and was purchased secondhand for our 2nd baby. In fact, the person I bought it from bought it secondhand. No idea how many babies it's been through. Doesn't matter. Grin

getmeacupoftea · 30/10/2019 11:27

We had a second hand one. Nothing wrong with it it's now done our second child.
Take it and spend your money in other things. A bugaboo pram new is so expensive!!

Chickychickydodah · 30/10/2019 11:30

I bought a second hand pram for my daughter and it was lovely , the person I got it off had not taken it outside at all, it was perfect .

nottodaysatanlucifer · 30/10/2019 11:30

People buy bugaboo second/third hand and still pay good money for them...

JustAnotherMammi · 30/10/2019 11:31

Buying a secondhand pram or being passed one on is so much better for our planet! Which surely is an important factor too? Little decisions that help make the world a better place for your baby?
I nearly always try to buy secondhand first.

nottodaysatanlucifer · 30/10/2019 11:31

Also you can buy brand new fabrics for bugaboo so it'll look new

insanepizza · 30/10/2019 11:31

Yes, I had a very second hand battered pram which was awesome. It wasn't smart but really suited us. I loved it and it was perfect for both my children.

So Much better for the environment too, this need for everything to be new is really problematic.

mclover · 30/10/2019 11:32

Join a secondhand group on Facebook for the pram you do want and buy secondhand - pranks are a bit like cars, they half in price once bought! My pram was £900 new but got secondhand, great condition, for £450.

You'll soon realise that you speed through baby stuff - you'll get a £150 baby born bouncer and they only use it for 6 months, a next to me crib for £150, they don't use it at all ... I'd rather buy second hand and put towards family days out, more maternity leave with my boy etc
