Second Hand Pram for First baby

georgia19ox · 30/10/2019 11:01

I have very kindly been given a Bugaboo Pram- I didn’t really want a second-hand pram for my first baby for the main reason i wanted to be able to go on a big shopping tip and myself and my DP were saving up to buy things after Christmas. My mum was the one who had Expected the gift from a family friend and now i feel like i have to have it.. i suppose what im asking is has anyone else had a second-hand pram for their first baby?

I plan on 2nd hand most things for my 1st. Ive already been gifted a 2nd hand cot. Going to wait til after 13 week scan to get other 2nd hand stuff.

BertieDrapper · 30/10/2019 12:45

Pretty much everything we got for DD was second hand...
We got a second hand Bugaboo from an eBay seller - £500 instead of £900

Think the only things we got new was a Moses baskets (gift) and car seat.
Saved ourselves a fortune

What with gumtree/Ebay/marketplace there is a ton of stuff you can get second hand and a load of it is barely used.

Pcosmama · 30/10/2019 13:14

I have a second hand Venicci pram for my first baby, I bought it from a local selling page on fb and I love it!

I get that you want to choose things yourself though, the pram I got was one I had had my eye on anyway. Could you keep the bugaboo at your mums as spare?

We've been lucky enough to get a ton of second hand stuff from family and friends for our DD and it's saved us a fortune. Some of it we probably wouldn't have chosen ourselves if we were buying new, but we were a bit creative, repainting or changing the fabrics and covers etc so agree with other posters about changing things like that.

The times we've not used what's been given to us is where we thought safety was an issue. We still bought a new mattress (although the one we were given was from close friends and a smoke free home etc), because it's recommended by the NHS. And although a couple of people offered us car seats we bought our own (which cost us a small fortune!) because we have a tiny car and live in a busy city in southern Europe where the drivers are pretty crazy so we wanted something that we knew was ADAC highly rated. We were also handed down a baby carrier but did some research and saw there were some doubts about hip dysplasia with it so were just about to splash the cash on a new Ergobaby when I friend gave us one we knew was good and safe. A friend also passed on some gorgeous cot bumpers which we didn't use as they're not considered safe now. So check the safety of the pram you've been given also. There are checklists on line of what you should look for and buy a new mattress. If everything is safe then I'd recommend using it.

Saving the cash on the basics has allowed us more leeway buying stuff we really like for her or planning more trips and activities together. Where we live, second hand is not that common, but from friends in the UK, I hear second-hand for babies is the norm because they need things for such a short time. Everyone (including those who could definitely afford new) advised us to do what they'd done and go second hand as much as possible. In our case the vast majority of clothes etc we buy for ourselves is also second-hand on visits to the UK (oh if only there were charity shops here!), better for the environment too!

There's so much a baby needs that even if you're given a ton of hand-me-downs, you'll still be shopping! And there are so many gorgeous things out there that are probably much more fun to buy than a pram :)

I had a secondhand travel system. It was the one I wanted, but second hand. Cost £200, so £1300 cheaper... After about 3 months I realised this pram (even though it was the one I had my heart set on) was not practical.
I was able to buy something (again second hand) that would fit out new life better.
You might want new, but I'd be so grateful. And if you do need a different one, you won't have the guilt of knowing you spent a tonne.
Doesn't matter how careful you are with a pram, it will get small scratches and marks.
Take it to a pram cleaning service and it will feel as good as new

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 30/10/2019 15:37

We are using a 4th hand bugaboo through friends, it's great and has saved lots of money and good reuse choice. My new thing was a cot. As soon as baby arrived, realised it didn't matter and would get 2 nd hand if we have another (currently in 1 bed flat so having to get rid of stuff as no storage).

Ohmygod123 · 31/10/2019 10:43

They gifted you a bugaboo! Wow that is a very nice family friend! You are lucky to have something gifted to you!
I didn't have a choice...especially when some of the prams are more expensive than a 2nd hand car!! It's ridiculous!! Why don't you save the money for your 1st family holiday and make some memories rather than spend it on something material that won't last a life time

Loaf90 · 31/10/2019 10:45

I haven't but had second hand everything else! Moses basket (new mattress though), playmat, bouncer, jumperoo etc. Absolutely nothing wrong with it! Save money wherever you can I say

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 31/10/2019 10:51

We had a secondhand Bugaboo for our PFB, we got given it for free. I was thrilled (even though it turned out that it wasn't the Holy Grail of prams that it's made out to be).

Trust me, your kid isn't going to care.

These days, I buy loads of stuff secondhand because you can get way better stuff for cheaper than it would be to buy something less good new if that makes sense. I'm obsessed! Plus it's much better for the environment.

AllDaySnacker · 31/10/2019 22:31

Bugaboos are fantastic. It’s a generous gift to give as it could have been sold for a decent return. Clean it out and enjoy it - it will get mucky anyway, so you won’t feel too pained when it happens as it wasn’t brand new. Then spend what you’ve saved on nice things for yourself and baby!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 31/10/2019 22:50

I totally agree that actually getting a secondhand pram is great because you have no idea what pram you need until you start using one with a baby in it.

I would use the Bugaboo for a bit and see how you get on with it. If it's great, then get some new accessories for it in a colour of your choice to make it 'yours'. If you don't get on with it, you can still buy something that does work for you. However, before you know it your newborn will be walking along holding your hand and no longer needing the pram!

But1stcoffee · 01/11/2019 08:09

Bugaboo have lots of different colour seat liners, canopies and cosy toes so maybe customise your buggy to suit your style and taste at a fraction of the price of buying new? We have a bugaboo and have found it really good quality and has lasted well so probably a good buggy to be given second hand. Put your money towards other things and enjoy your shopping trips

lowlandLucky · 01/11/2019 08:30

I had a second hand coach built pram, bouncy chair, moses basket and highchair all second hand, why wouldyou pay so much for a new pram when you can get a second hand one for free ? Is it for you or the baby ?

FunOnTheBeach20 · 01/11/2019 08:35

We have had nearly second hand everything. Expect for clothes, which I prefer to buy. Mainly because the ones gifted have been the wrong season and in some instances threadbare. Also bought car seats for safety reasons.

We both have decent jobs, a good sized savings pot. We could afford everything brand new. But it’s just such a waste.

All that plastic tat and furniture just being thrown in a landfill. You literally use things for a few months at a time. If you give the pram a good clean I bet you won’t even know. The NCT mums were surprised ours was gifted.

I feel very lucky to have been the youngest of the family and benefited from everyone else’s generous gifts.

FunOnTheBeach20 · 01/11/2019 08:37

Also we have the same pram and I’ve loved it. We do lots of muddy walks and it’s gotten filthy. Making me extra pleased I didn’t spend £1500 on it!

rosewils · 01/11/2019 08:44

There's nothing wrong with second hand if that's what you've actively chosen.

I wouldn't be happy with someone else making the decision for me though.

For me going and choosing what baby equipment I wanted was a really enjoyable part of pregnancy.

00100001 · 01/11/2019 08:45

Yes, got it barely used for £50, reatiord at £650.

The only things we brought new were a cot mattress and a cat seat.

Cot, clothes, blankets etc second hand

CottonSock · 01/11/2019 09:35

Someone gave you a pram that could cost about £1000. I think you could almost go on holiday instead. Pram shopping is exciting, but after a year everyone buys a stroller anyway.

00100001 · 01/11/2019 11:30

I think the fact that you're having to save up to buy this buggy you want shows you that it's too expensive! It's all a bit of a con really...

You'd do better saving that money up to do things like... pay for swimming lessons or something. Or new furniture/carpet for their room when they move in there etc.

DerbyshireGirly · 01/11/2019 11:35

We were all set to buy a brand new Silver Cross this weekend but just on the off chance, I found the exact same model on eBay for half the price. It's only been used a handful of times and the seller has had the linings etc dry cleaned. Why would we not buy the second hand pram? It's a no brainer.

I love a bargain!!

Crashtestdummie · 01/11/2019 11:41

Take it op! The money saved can be used for baby groups and coffees etc with other mums guilt free!

DelurkingAJ · 01/11/2019 11:45

We had a second hand (third baby) Bugaboo. It has a very worn hood so we ordered a new one. We were delighted. We could have afforded a new one but why on earth would we have?

horse4course · 01/11/2019 11:47

You feel like all these purchasing decisions are important but really so long as the baby doesn't fall out and you can use it how you want (get it up stairs or in car or across fields etc) then it doesn't matter.

Your baby will be just as smeary and leaky as anyone else's, new ones don't stay pristine forever!

I've got secondhand everything for dc. I feel much better knowing if something gets bashed or stained, it doesn't actually matter because most things cost 20p!

oooohcarriewhite · 01/11/2019 11:53

Yep.
2nd hand for 1st
New for 2nd
2nd hand for third.
A bugaboo is a good pram, think I would be happy if it's in good condition and something to your taste that you would buy new.
If you hate it on the style / colour then no.

LittleAndOften · 01/11/2019 11:57

Yep, we got our travel system from ebay. It had barely been used. £800 new, we paid £250. The only things I would buy second hand are car seats and mattresses. Babies are expensive so save where you can!
