Second Hand Pram for First baby

georgia19ox · 30/10/2019 11:01

I have very kindly been given a Bugaboo Pram- I didn’t really want a second-hand pram for my first baby for the main reason i wanted to be able to go on a big shopping tip and myself and my DP were saving up to buy things after Christmas. My mum was the one who had Expected the gift from a family friend and now i feel like i have to have it.. i suppose what im asking is has anyone else had a second-hand pram for their first baby?

Yes, I did. I chose it myself from a charity shop even though I could afford a new one, as I won't spend ridiculous sums on things. It was clean and exactly what I was looking for.

Once I had it, it became my daughter's pram and I attached no importance to the fact that someone had had it before.

Thank you very much for all your comments its made me feel better about having a pram i didn’t pick ive already seen the pram it does look like brand new even the wheels are spotless - i think i was just a bit considered because i was really excited to get everything ready and was going to have a colour theme but that’s already gone out the window HAHA never mind

I think nearly everything my son had was second hand.

I bought as much as I could secondhand, and a pram in excellent condition secondhand is a brilliant thing to be given. I echo pp about not knowing what pram you will actually need. I really tried to stop DBro and SIL buying a new expensive pram and making the same mistake as me, to no avail. A year later and DBro told me I was right and they should have got it secondhand.

If you want a colour scheme, you might be able to buy new coloured bits of the bugaboo, or but a footmuff in the colour you want?

Fookadook · 30/10/2019 11:45

Bugaboos are expensive prams OP. They keep their value. I have a Bee and it lasted two children including through the toddler stage. Which one have you been given?

Whitecandle · 30/10/2019 11:47

If you don't want it don't have it. Don't feel guilt tripper just because some others can't afford brand new.

You can never have your first baby again and do things for the first time again, so do exactly what you want!! I'm a big believer of that xxx

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/10/2019 11:47

I did too. My grown-up niece gave me her Emmaljunga pram.
Then when I had another, I bought a secondhand double buggy.

Camomila · 30/10/2019 11:52

As long as it was in good condition and fitted in with our lifestyle I'd accept it. If you give it back for sensible reasons like it not fitting in your car boot I don't see why anyone would be offended.

You can also buy new mattresses for carrycot bits.

georgia19ox · 30/10/2019 11:54

@Fookadook its the bugaboo cameleon 3 i think the colour is called off white

My mom turned up with one from her friend and although baby is not here yet I really appreciated it, new prams are a lot of money imo and I’d rather spend that money on making sure everything else was ready. Even having a bit more in the bank for some extra time off or anything like that. Congratulations x

ShippingNews · 30/10/2019 11:57

It's great to get things given to you. I know you have all these wonderful ideas about a big shopping trip and buying everything new, but if you get some stuff second hand you'll have a lot more money to spend on other things.

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/10/2019 12:00

You can buy new fabric and mattress. That way it is yours and has your mark on it. Buying everything brand new (which is what I did) is overrated. I wasted soooo much money. Bugaboos are fab, so easy to push and lightweight. You can also use it in place of a Moses basket. My friend had second hand almost everything. Somewhere in between would have suited me if I could do it again.

notso · 30/10/2019 12:01

You could buy new covers for it if you wanted. Bugaboo have so many options.

Raffles1981 · 30/10/2019 12:01

Two prams, a cot, a Moses basket, two car seats and most clothing, shoes - all second hand for my DS. It saves a fortune and things get reused. Nothing wrong with it at all, but if you have a romantic idea of shopping for one, then maybe do it for the car seat?

Rowrowboat · 30/10/2019 12:04

My biggest regret with buying baby stuff was not buying a second hand pram!
All that money I could have spent on something else just because I was being precious!

EssentialHummus · 30/10/2019 12:07

BTW, you may be able to buy a "colour pack" for it, if you like - have a google.

Amicompletelyinsane · 30/10/2019 12:07

I got a pram off ebay. I would rather save the money for doing enjoyable things with the child when they are older

AdultFishcakes · 30/10/2019 12:07

I get you, it’s something you wanted to do as part of the thrill and rituals of getting ready for a new baby but trust me, a second hand bugaboo will be great.

We have a 4th hand icandy double peach and that thing is a warhorse, all going well it will be used for our next baby in 2021. It’s RRP new was £1100. I got it for £250 and it’s sturdier than a bloody tank.

81Byerley · 30/10/2019 12:10

I had a 2nd hand pram for my first baby, I was thrilled with it!

Lunafortheloveogod · 30/10/2019 12:12

Our first pram was second hand, never had as many compliments on something in my life, cost £80 and only didn’t have the change bag.. which doesn’t matter as I got one I liked that matched for pennies online. New and still for sale at the time it was £800.. I could’ve spent the extra on brand new but saving that meant I got a load of non essential bits like our perfect prep and a instead of a normal group 0 seat we got the joie everystage? So he won’t need another one.

Dc2 on the way and I’ve got my cot second hand this time (there’s not even a year of a gap so ds won’t be ready to give his up) I still have crib n basket n enough clothes to open a shop so all of that will be sorted through stained bits removed n reused. This time our prams new, only because I needed specific things from it as a double and I really didn’t want a tandem with some poor bugger in the basket (I liked the silver cross waves but I’m too short to actually use them comfortably). I bought ours in the sale down from £800 to £500 so still a really good saving and it’s the mountain buggy duet with the side basket n carrycot.. which is the same price as the waves second hand.

aweedropofsancerre · 30/10/2019 12:16

Our neighbour gave us a bugaboo. However it wasn’t suitable for a new born as it didn’t have the carrycot section. I didn’t bother buying it and got a cheaper buggy suitable for a new born instead. The bugaboo was massive and too bulky for my car so I needed a smaller buggy anyway.

Fookadook · 30/10/2019 12:17

That’s worth about £800+ new OP. You could buy a new hood etc for it in the colours you want and sell the old ones. There are Bugaboo Facebook groups you can sell things through.

Toffeecakes · 30/10/2019 12:34

You've struck lucky there OP, and if you don't like the colours then Bugaboo covers can be changed - part of the reason they're so great. If I was you, I'd go window shopping for prams anyway as it's fun (IMO). Try loads out, get the info about them all. You'll find that nothing compares to a Bugaboo and will be told that by all the sales people.

You'll still need accessories, and a colour pack, a pram bag, a buddy clip etc etc. So it'll still be fun, just a hell of a lot cheaper!

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 30/10/2019 12:39

I borrowed my sister's pram for DS2, so that would have been baby number 4. I planned to use it only for the stage when they need to be laying flat and then move to a reclining stroller and sling. So it was only used for the first five months or so.

I don't have much space at home and really wanted it gone ASAP so borrowing seemed practical. It was a lovely pram as well, way nicer than I could or would have spent.

The only thing I get twitchy about is car seats, but even then I used my sister's one as I trust her (obv).

NanooCov · 30/10/2019 12:39

We have the Cameleon 3 and it's a great pram - has been on the go for almost five years now through two kids. I don't drive so it was perfect for me as it coped with all terrains and the kids slept well in it. You can buy new fabrics for it if you want to change the colour (I couldn't have coped with a pale colour!)
