Feel like I’ve made a massive outfit faux pas at work

Today I wore: fitted black poloneck tucked into an A line skirt (about 4 inches off the knee but I am tall!), thick black tights and heeled knee high boots (not over the knee and heels are 3 inches)

Manager made a few comments about my outfit. Asked if I was going out after work and just a few other comments which combined made me think I’ve fucked up!

Public sector, a whole range of clothes from sort of casual to very smart

Skirt length doesn't sound very corporate workwear, particularly as will have been shorter when seated.

Midi length skirt with asymmetrical hem and I think rest of outfit would have been fine.

No one died though.

Whatdayisit2 · 28/10/2019 21:29

Perhaps flat boots might be better next time...but public sector offices aren't exactly know for being fashion forward! Ignore them!

Cakemadeoffruit · 28/10/2019 21:30

Sounds like what half my dept wears on a daily basis. What exactly did they comment?

It sounds lovely OP.

Pantone345 · 28/10/2019 21:33

Asked if I was going out after work in reference to my outfit. Said my boots were “interesting” (they are standard black leather block heeled knee highs!) and just generally made me feel uncomfortable although I may be projecting!

CalleighDoodle · 28/10/2019 21:35

Is the manager male or female?

Lucked · 28/10/2019 21:35

I work in a hospital and it sounds fine to me presuming I am imagining the skirt length correct and you weren’t flashing anything.

Maybe she was just wondering if you were going out because you looked nice?

Michaelbaubles · 28/10/2019 21:36

It sounds fine to me but people (men) can be FUCKING WEIRD about knee boots, even very dull slightly clumpy everyday ones. I’ve always get odd comments when I wear knee boots even if the rest of my outfit is totally standard and completely non-suggestive.

Pinkarsedfly · 28/10/2019 21:36

I think you’ve been perved on, OP Sad

Nothing wrong in that.
You looked smart.
Bet you are the kind that can wear a sack and look good.

imnottoofussed · 28/10/2019 21:38

Was the outfit out of the ordinary for you? I usually wear jeans and jumpers every day so when I branch out and wear something different someone always comments. Maybe that's why it was?

LolaSmiles · 28/10/2019 21:38

It sounds like a nice outfit, but not one that I would wear to work. It seems very much a going out for food with friends outfit.

Lessthanzero · 28/10/2019 21:39

It's the knee highs, if you'd had pumps on noone would have batted an eyelid.

But your outfit sounds nice and very much somthing I would wear in the office. I only wear short skirts, any longer I feel fat, frumpy and mumsy. But if you're self conscious then don't wear the boots.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/10/2019 21:41

My first thought was how warm that sounds. I'd never have worn the boots all day, but that's just my personal taste as I'd have demented by feeling too enclosed. I think corporate wear has largely disappeared in most offices, the days of everyone dressing like they wanted to be on The Apprentice are long gone.

Wilmalovescake · 28/10/2019 21:41

Skirt four inches above the knee and three inch high heeled boots?

I wouldn’t wear that combo to work.

ClientListQueen · 28/10/2019 21:43

Probably the knee boots. I wear anything to work and nobody bats an eyelid but if I wear (small hole) fishnets and heels it's like the men lose their brains HmmHmm

MorrisZapp · 28/10/2019 21:44

Ooh I'm getting Judith from The Weather vibes.

Sparrowlegs248 · 28/10/2019 21:44

I'm imagining it to be a bit 60s styled. Sounds nice. I have worn very similar in my public sector role, a few years ago (when I was thinner....)

Pantone345 · 28/10/2019 21:49

I wear heels 3/5 days a week so not sure they would have been a big surprise and they weren’t stiletto heels.

Kind of like these but leather and maybe an inch higher

Manager is female

Outfit kind of like this but long sleeved black polo neck and no hat

Ooh they're nice

MrsBobDylan · 28/10/2019 21:54

Not saying this is the case here op, but I had a female manager in my last job who used to say stuff like that to me.

Turned out she was doing it to undermine me and shake my confidence. Unfortunately, it did and I ended up resigning after she made a very blatant move to destroy my career.

Ultimately, she was jealous and without moral fibre. I am now much happier.

Be very cautious of this person op.

Croquembou · 28/10/2019 21:55

Sounds entirely inoffensive. I'd forget about it.

stucknoue · 28/10/2019 21:55

Sounds like what I wore today, I'm not that tall, so M&S skirts come to 2 inches above my knee
