What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

Darlie Routier is the one that perplexes me. I don't think her conviction is safe.

tobee · 29/10/2019 23:20

I read a newspaper article a while back talking about that very thing MissMarple. It also said that evidence points to boys getting less publicity than girls.

Hollyhobbi · 29/10/2019 23:22

All the women still missing in Leinster from the 1990's:

Annie McCarrick
Fiona Pender
Fiona Sinnott
Deirdre Jacob
Ciara Breen
JoJo Dollard

On Wiki under 'Ireland's Vanishing Triangle'.

Also Philip Cairns whose first cousin was in one of my sister's years at school and little Mary Boyle in Donegal. My mum was very affected by the last case as I was the same age as Mary was when she vanished. She was one of twins so it must have been so devastating for her twin as well.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 29/10/2019 23:23

@HarryHarry I'll take a look at that book. I also thought Patton Oswalt was excellent on the MST3K reboot.

BoronationStreet · 29/10/2019 23:43

@dayswithaY Damien Echols was railroaded...all 3 of those teens were set up. John Mark Byers or Terry Hobbs killed those little boys.

Byers had his teeth pulled out after the murders but before the police could ask him for imprints. That's dodgy as hell.

Terry Hobbs' DNA was found on the rope the boys were hogtied with.

It's shocking that no one has been charged, considering the evidence pointing to 2 of the boys stepdads.

@alwayscauseastir @CottonSock I know someone who was taken in for questioning for the Josie murders. I also met Michael Stone who was convicted of killing them. I knew pretty well one of the key witnesses to the prosecution case. There was definitely more to that than meets the eye. I wouldn't trust the witness at all. Ever. But then again Michael Stone was an odd character too.

Marcipex · 30/10/2019 01:45

Madeleine McCann, but I think someone will confess one day.
Jill Dando, someone knows .

BlackCatSleeping · 30/10/2019 04:36

I was about to mention the Central Park 5 as a prime example of then evidence is made to fit the crime. Except they didn't really even have any evidence against those boys. They forced confessions with promise of plea bargains.

You can read the case files for this case online.
www.nyc-cpj.org/Home/Disclaimer

You can see quite clearly that none of the statements matched. Everyone was saying different things. It's very obvious by looking at the evidence that there was something very wrong.

SalomesDance

The dogs alerted to blood and a dead body around 15 times. I think they were correct.

There were criticisms of the handling of the dogs, such as going over the same area repeatedly and the handler pointing out areas to the dog. There were not able to find Madeleine's DNA at any of the points the dogs alerted to. It was a rental car and a rental apartment. It's not shocking that they found something there, but they couldn't say for sure what that something was or when it was there.

@DDIJ I read the Michelle McNamara’s book a few years back before the Golden State Killer got caught but I couldn’t help but think how the cops didn’t realise that he worked in law enforcement. The clues seemed to be right there but I guess that’s the power of hindsight.

MITCHELL33 · 30/10/2019 06:02

Re Michael Stone I do competitions as a hobby reporter who came round to interview me [I had just won a car] eluded to the fact they the police thought the culprit was someone the family knew.I personally think Michael Stone is innocent.

areyoubeingserviced · 30/10/2019 06:12

Jill Dando
I just don’t understand why anyone would put a hit out on her.

EmmiJay · 30/10/2019 06:30

For those asking, if you're om facebook you can find all the info on this case there. The page is called RIP Kendrick Johnson. Scroll back far enough and you'll see they removed his organs in the autopsy and filled him with newspaper, the cctv tapes have missing hours and the boys who supposedly did it confessed and then took it back due to pressure from their fathers/family and social standing in their community. Its so messy and really sad.

Lord lucan

Alsonification · 30/10/2019 07:45

@ Hollyhobbi

Larry Murphy is my guess on most (if not all) of Ireland’s missing women from the 90’s. Evil bastard.

Potnoodledoo · 30/10/2019 07:54

@Hollyhobbi they know Fiona Pender was murdered by someone close to her. They think her partner did it.But cant get the proof.

Dizzylin · 30/10/2019 08:33

For me it's Lindsay Rimmer. She was the same age as me when she was murdered and was only in the next town.

MissMarpletheMurderer · 30/10/2019 08:58

It feels wrong to be interested, I wonder why as humans we have such a desire to read about such desperately sad situations. I can not begin to understand how the family are feeling but maybe by sharing like this someone will come forward with the piece that solves the jigsaw.
I watched a programme once where they showed how relatively easy it was to prove a family member was guilty but hard to prove a strangers guilt.
I just don't understand how I have never heard about Paddy and David, I have heard about most of the cases listed but two children who disappeared together, tobee that's sad but from my experience of local Facebook appeals I'd say missing girls always garner more interest, although statistics say young men are statistically more likely to come to harm (including self harm)

SerafinaPekkola · 30/10/2019 09:00

“ It feels wrong to be interested, I wonder why as humans we have such a desire to read about such desperately sad situations. ”
Many of us don’t.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/10/2019 09:08

Tbh, if something dreadful had happened to a family member of mine and it was an unsolved crime, I was be bloody grateful that people were still interested enough to talk about the case and want to try to solve it.

SerafinaPekkola · 30/10/2019 09:15

And when was a crime last solved by armchair detectives on the Internet?

WheresTheEvidence · 30/10/2019 09:17

Ones that have stayed with me are

Junko Furato (be aware when reading up!)

Bobby Dunbar (listened to the American life podcast and it was very interesting)

Walter Collins (the film changeling was based on it - very strange case where the mother argues with FBI that theyve returned rhe wrong child)

Frédéric Pierre Bourdin (watched a docu film when younger with my mum and we were so baffled by how this happened -very strange especially as the FBI were involved)

WheresTheEvidence · 30/10/2019 09:19

Also Adnan Syed from Serial Podcast.

Potnoodledoo · 30/10/2019 09:21

Reddit has quite a few.
www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/3w43fj/the_grateful_doe_has_been_positively_identified/?

Heres one.

MissMarpletheMurderer · 30/10/2019 09:25

SerafinaPekkola especially for missing people the internet is unbelievably powerful, some people have just started a new life. Also I saw on here (sorry can't find the link) the awful pictures which were shared by interpol? Regarding places where children were being abused, regular pictures of houses and streets and play parks, if enough people read about them these locations would be found.
Also I am aware many don't but this is a thread about unsolved crime so I'd imagine those that click to read are interested.
