Anyone else dread the clocks going back

I hate it.
I loathe the long dark evenings. As the mornings get darker it means I go to and from work in the dark and no natural light in my workplace.
By February my energy levels and mood will have gone to shit
The nearer I get to menopause the worse it seems to get
Apols for the pity party
Anyone else join me on the
"No it isn't cosy it's fucking miserable " bench SadGrin

A lot of people I work with have a VI and this is exacerbated in poor light.
The winter is hideous and particularly isolating for them
And I know some of my elderly neighbours feel really down as they don't go out when the weather is poor and when it's dark

I hate it too OP. I hate the shorter days, and really need sunlight to feel almost human. Even a cloudy, dark miserable day during the summer makes me feel low.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/10/2019 18:13

Maybe us winter/darkness haters should start a commiseration thread to count down to the shortest day and after that note every little improvement! I thought today was the last time it will be light at 5 pm until mid-February --urghhh!

Delatron · 26/10/2019 18:17

Is potentially one extra hour in bed (not if you have kids) for one day really a reason to like this time of year?

And also because you can see the stars.?! .. I love the positivity but to be honest I’m more likely to see the stars in summer when I’m sat out enjoying the warm weather.

A few little things don’t make up for months and months of cold and dark weather.

Bellringer · 26/10/2019 18:17

Chocolate pudding, catch up tv. Hot bath. I hate it too, my body clock will be out for a week.

AforEffort9 · 26/10/2019 18:17

I hate commuting in the dark, everyones lights seem so bright. I've just moved to somewhere more rural too so ak dreading winter roads.
The dark feels so claustrophobic and I get anxious about going out in it.

MamaFlintstone · 26/10/2019 18:19

I can’t stand the dark mornings so I’m fine with the clocks going back.

sproutsandparsnips · 26/10/2019 18:20

I don't mind generally, although my son has just started going with his friend to kick a ball about after school etc and he doesn't need any more screen time tbh so that's a shame.
On a more immediate note I'm just about to go in for an extra long night shift so from that perspective I could do without it!

Delatron · 26/10/2019 18:23

Yes but if you can’t stand the dark mornings then the clock change only makes a difference for about a week. Then it’s dark in the morning again! I miss waking up to sunshine at 6am.

Hecateh · 26/10/2019 18:24

I hate it too but don't suffer as badly since taking huge doses of vitamin D - but I mean large doses as recommended by the Vt D council rather than the piddling doses suggested by the NHS. (I do get regular blood tests due to another condition and my D is still only just above average.

Graphista · 26/10/2019 18:45

I was going to ask about vit d doses, Nhs says 10mcg which seems pathetic, my supermarket own bottle they're 25 mug but vit d council says as much as 250mcg might be necessary!

That's 10 tablets which seems a hell of a lot.

How much do people take and what are experiences?

PinkBuffalo · 26/10/2019 18:50

I hate it too OP. I love light mornings, long light evenings. Walk for miles in the evenings in the summer. Can't do that when it's dark, wet and windy. I'm an outdoorsy person and hate this weather and the dark.
I don't find it cosy.

Ginfordinner · 26/10/2019 18:51

It means Christmas is on it's way and staying indoors in snuggly pj's watching films and doing the house up.

That doesn’t excite me one bit.

A lot of people I work with have a VI

Visual impairment? I am extremely short sighted and have a PVD in one eye. I really struggle to see well in low light levels.
Do the people who love winter not commute to and from work in the dark? I have to drive to work, and this time of year is hideous because not only will it be dark, I get caught in the traffic for Meadowhall, and there is no avoiding it.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/10/2019 19:03

Why would anyone want to stay indoors in snuggly pjs (no apostrophe required) and watch films? How yucky is that - I want to be outside in the fresh air, watching wildlife and absorbing sunshine. And why would people want to get under blankets on the sofa - no, no. no! Only 7 weeks to the shortest day and then it all starts to get better again.

Delatron · 26/10/2019 19:16

Yes snuggling under a blanket in Pjs reminds me of being ill and festering away. Yuck.

Love being outdoors. Say what you like but being outside when it’s cold, dark and windy is no fun

BlaueLagune · 26/10/2019 19:16

There really isn’t much to be said in favour of the clock change, and a lot to be said against it

I agree to a extent but can you imagine how awful the mornings would be in December/January if the clocks didn't go back?

HOWEVER, why do we have to wait until the end of March for them to go forward again? They should go forward at the end of Feb.

CileyMayRhinovirus · 26/10/2019 19:16

@Graphista

I take 10-20 ug (sorry don't know how to get the symbol) which apparently is 200 to 400% rda

I get 2 hours minimum walking in the elements every day

I still get SAD

If I go to the GP they tell me to supplement vitamin D (like I didn't think of that FFS) and as much sunlight as possible (yep to that too) and "wait to see if it passes" which of course it does, once the sun comes back out.

I've tried cod liver oil and other forms of vitamin d. The SAD light. Nothing helps.

It's like taking magnesium for sleep. Helps some people, but not me.

I'm immune to supplements Shock

CileyMayRhinovirus · 26/10/2019 19:18

I do like my pyjamas though.

I'm sure I'd like my sofa if I ever got to sit on it and my TV if I ever got to watch it too. Maybe when the kids leave home Are a bit older

Drabarni · 26/10/2019 19:22

Why would anyone want to stay indoors in snuggly pjs (no apostrophe required)

You sound lovely. Bet your parents are proud they raised you to correct people's English. How rude, what a cow.

Maybe we aren't all the same and enjoy our homes and families.
Getting out in the sun on a crisp morning is lovely though, nicer inside when raining and dark though.

Drogosnextwife · 26/10/2019 19:23

I love it. I love the dark evenings, I love going out in the cold and being wrapped up, I love going for a run in the far because I feel invisible and can run round the streets instead of trying to hide in the woods.
I'm a childminder and I love taking the kids to the park in the autumn and winter when it's crisp and sunny.
I love the fresh air in the morning and the cold breeze coming through the windows
I've just bought 2 new pairs of winter boots, one with a fleece lining, I even wore a scarf yesterday.
Bloody love it!!!

Drogosnextwife · 26/10/2019 19:24

I do struggle to get up in the morning though.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/10/2019 19:25

Drabarni - Sorry dear - just trying to keep standards up! Yup - my parents were very proud of me, thanks!

Arrowfanatic · 26/10/2019 19:28

I love the dark nights! I always enjoyed finishing work in the dark, getting up in the dark & just feeling like the world is still sleeping. I mean, i know it isn't but i feel like it is. Then i watch the sunrise & it feels like the earth takes a deep breath in.

Plus, its so much easier to get everyone to go to bed when its dark Halloween Grin

QuestionableMouse · 26/10/2019 19:29

Apparently it might stop soon. I've just been reading about it.

SinglePringle · 26/10/2019 19:30

I’m with you OP. I can just about cope with the dark evenings at the weekend but I hate the dark mornings and the fact it doesn’t really get light. The low level, grey ‘mid-light’ is so depressing. It’s like living in a drizzly cloud for 5 months.

And I fucking hate hot chocolate (and anyone who calls it ‘hot choc’ or ‘hot choccy’) and ‘snuggling watching movies’. I want to be outdoors in my garden, French windows agape, white wine chilling!

I cope by opening all the windows every morning, running outside and hanging the fuck on in there.

There was a ‘Yes, we fucking hate summer’ thread. We need to start a ‘Winter SUCKS’ thread.
