Anyone else dread the clocks going back

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/10/2019 15:38

I hate it.
I loathe the long dark evenings. As the mornings get darker it means I go to and from work in the dark and no natural light in my workplace.
By February my energy levels and mood will have gone to shit
The nearer I get to menopause the worse it seems to get
Apols for the pity party
Anyone else join me on the
"No it isn't cosy it's fucking miserable " bench SadGrin

I dislike the short daylight of winter. I miss running in the woods and hills 😒
But I’m glad the clocks go back because it buys us another month or so of daylight in the mornings at least.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 26/10/2019 16:11

I agree OP - I particularly hate the dark mornings when it doesn't get light until 8ish. The evenings I can just about put up with. I always have my eye on when the shortest day is (21st Dec or thereabouts) and love watching the mornings and evenings slowly getting lighter. I love summer morning swhen it gets light around 4 and the birds are singing!!

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 26/10/2019 16:15

I'm the opposite. Can't stand long light nights in summer but love the darkness in winter!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/10/2019 16:18

I know the days would "shorten" naturally but it feel like such a sudden leap when we do it like this

God I hate the “cosy” brigade- it’s dark, cold and miserable, by the time I’m home from work I feel too low to be productive and use my evening! The park with the toddler is such a struggle- I’m not made for this time of year, where’s my cocoon ?

ghostchild · 26/10/2019 16:21

I'm in the middle. I like spring and autumn when there's still darkness but not too early, and it doesn't start getting light too early either.
The darkness also makes me feel a bit claustrophobic, which it never used to do, and I'm not really enjoying it this year. Though to be fair I hate the heat and long hours of summer too.. Confused clearly I'm not having a good year

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/10/2019 16:21

Can I hibernate till
March

I hate it too. It's bloody freezing today and soon it will be dark as well.

CanThingsChange35 · 26/10/2019 16:24

I struggle with SAD but I'm grateful for the lighter mornings for a little while as over the past few weeks I've been leaving home in the dark and arriving home in the dark. This way my commute will be lighter for longer in the mornings.

Crede · 26/10/2019 16:24

I hate winter, 8 use vitamin d and sad lights but it's still awful, I do like the clocks going back though, I live up at the very North of the country and those lighter mornings from the clocks really helps.

Babdoc · 26/10/2019 16:25

There really isn’t much to be said in favour of the clock change, and a lot to be said against it.
It increases accident rates, when kids are trying to play out after school and it’s twilight earlier, so drivers don’t see them on their bikes or playing in the street. Kids don’t get the benefit of a lighter early morning to play - they’re getting ready for school.
It wastes a lot of extra electricity, because we have to put the lights and heating on an hour earlier in the evening, but many of us are still in bed in the early morning so don’t benefit from the extra daylight then.

The clock change was supposed to be for farmers - but their work these days is not tied to the clock, and they often harvest all night with floodlights on the combines. I doubt any of them delay milking time for their dairy herd just because the clock has altered.
There are debates in parliament every few years, about scrapping the whole nonsense, but nobody ever makes a decision.
And before anyone mentions the Scots, yes I live in Scotland, and whatever you do to the clock we get 17 hours of darkness a day in midwinter! I’d just prefer to have a little of the paltry daylight actually still available when kids get out of school!

Delatron · 26/10/2019 16:26

Agree, I can’t stand the whole ‘ooh isn’t it cosy, let’s snuggle under a blanket for 6 months’ malarkey. It’s dark and miserable and it saps all the energy out of me. I’ve been ill for about 3 weeks so even more exhausted. Hate it all. Can’t stand the clocks changing and it getting dark even earlier.

The sun and light give me energy. Mumsnet is funny, I never meet anyone in real life who goes ‘ooh lovely rainy weather we’re having.’ It will be like this until about May. That’s a bloody long time to be cosy under a manky blanket.

MollyMorals · 26/10/2019 16:28

I despise the dark mornings and nights. I don’t find it comforting wearing layers to keep warm or snuggling under blankets with twinkly lights either. I resort to taking vitamin D and using my SAD lamp (which makes things tolerable). I live for 23rd December knowing that the nights will slowly starting to get lighter again and spend my time planning next year’s holidays Grin

QuestionableMouse · 26/10/2019 16:29

After a horrible near miss last year I hate driving in the dark. Even the thought of it is making me anxious. Also not looking forward to the cold, scraping cars, ice and the endless long nights!

simonisnotme · 26/10/2019 16:31

I agree with you OP
Its bloody ridiculous and in this 'energy saving age' the darker nights means more electric being used so how the fuck can we use less when its dark at 4pm
stupid sodding clock changes

PivotPivotPivottt · 26/10/2019 16:36

I love the dark nights. I'm the total opposite in that I feel down during the light evenings. Lone parent of 2 and it makes me feel lonely and sad when everyone i see families having barbecues etc. Dark nights make me feel relaxed and content.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/10/2019 16:38

Anyone got any tips to make it bearable?

OP posts:
pickletickled · 26/10/2019 16:39

I don't mind the dark nights right now, It's the dark mornings I hate.
The fact that I see no sun except through my work window.
I had a fairly severe Vit D deficiency at the start of this year so will prepare myself and stock up on some supplements in the next few weeks.

Have you spoken to your GP about the sweating? I used to suffer with Hyperhidrosis. I found out about a medication that as a side effect massively reduces sweating and asked if I could try it.
It's called Oxybutynin and it's actually prescribed for bladder issues - I personally felt a reduce feeling when I needed to pee but still knew and went to the loo normally so it wasn't a big deal. It was amazing in controlling the sweating and also when I'd taken myself off them after 2 or so years.... the Hyperhidrosis didn't return, up to now (I stopped in Jan/Feb this year)

BarbedBloom · 26/10/2019 16:41

I love it. I hate light nights and the summer. But I do empathise with people who struggle, same as I hope they will when the situation is reserved. My friend has one of those light lamps that she says does help a bit.

57Varieties · 26/10/2019 16:43

Yep, hate it. In a few weeks it’ll be dark in the mornings as well so the benefit doesn’t even last long. Up and out in the dark, home in the dark, the few hours of daylight there are all spent at work. Grim.

Delatron · 26/10/2019 16:45

It’s amazing how quickly the mornings get dark again.

Dowser · 26/10/2019 16:46

Yes ..every year
Mayhem on the roads

Ginfordinner · 26/10/2019 16:50

I hate the long dark evenings as well. I just feel gloomy all the time in low light levels. I hate "cosy" and "snuggling". They just mean claustrophobia to me. I want light and airy.

In the summer we had a couple of long running threads from summer haters who were all extolling the virtues of autumn. Where are all these autumn lovers now? According to our local weather man there are very few places in the country that haven't had some form of rain every day so far in October.

Where I live had been relentlessly wet and dull. None of these romanticised crisp, clear autumn days that autumn lovers go on about.

Dowser · 26/10/2019 16:51

Even though I’ve got one more summer holiday to go before Christmas
Even though I just got back from the sunshine on Wednesday
Even though we had the flight from hell
I’m missing the light, warmth and sunshine like crazy

I’ve just remarked to my husband how much more I’m eating now I’m cold , wet and miserable
On holiday a bowl of home made muesli did me till 5 or 6pm
And after Christmas I’ll be ticking the days off till March 1 st and our next one

Dowser · 26/10/2019 16:53

It’s rained for at least 24 hours in N Yorks
Sun just got out now
Too bloody late mate 😡
