How many friends have you got

Mumof21989 · 24/10/2019 12:09

I have one mum friend and one friend I met at 18 12 years ago.

I say hi in the street to people from school but all my school friend ships have fizzled out.

I don't have a bestie that I spend heaps of time with anymore.

Just having a thoughtful moment as there's a page opened on Facebook this week for school pictures to be exchanged amongst ex students. Weird looking back to my school days and seeing all the faces I spent most of my life with back then.

Probably 5 really close friends (we arent 1 group), who im in some sort of contact every weekly, and then maybe 5 various people im friendly with who i see maybe 2 times a year.

My husband has loads of friends but they come and go, in my world they wouldnt be considered "friends" in his they are.

MabelBee · 24/10/2019 13:30

None. I have people I say hi to, a few mums who I get invited to drinks with, old friends who I see if I go back home, which is seldom to never, but am not in touch with regularly. I'm quite peripheral and there is nobody I'm close to. Recently I fractured my leg in a field and had nobody to ring to come and save me so I had to walk two miles to my car and drive home! I did think then that I should probably make some friends so I have been trying to put in more effort but mostly my life is too busy so I'm not usually bothered.

FFSnotanotherone · 24/10/2019 13:36

I have a good number of friends but I work at these relationships because they are really important to me. I've never dumped my girlfriends when I've got a new fella, and I always turn up and do what I say I will. I'm not flakey and I hate letting people down.
As a consequence I have an interesting and varied social life and feel loved and cared for. They bring joy and happiness to my life and are great fun aswell as good counsel.

My family aren't great, and I'm not great at romantic relationships which is why I think I have made friendships a priority.

I have my sister who is my best friend and then I have 1 other friend from school who I see maybe twice a month but always with partners/kids. That's it, never been one for many friends. Find them hard to make and keep.

timetochangeagainforever · 24/10/2019 13:55

I have a lot of friends for which I'm very grateful. About 15 for over 30yrs who are all friends with each other too (clubbing in the 80s/90s) who I see prob every couple months. One of whom I'm having dinner with tonight. Few from school. Couple from primary school. Few mums from my kids primary school (so known them about 15years). Few from more recent years. Speak to at least one friend a day and see at least one friend each week. I'm divorced and now live alone so I very much appreciate my friends. Many are also still friends with my ex husband (we get on so not a problem). I'm also close to my family so see them at least weekly too. I really couldn't have got through the past few years without my support network.

EmmiJay · 24/10/2019 13:58

I have a very close friend who I've known since secondary school. We speak at least once a week. I have my sisters who I consider my besties. The schoolgate mums I call my close associates. I have the Boy Clan which is a collective of ex's and love interests who I speak to quite regularly. Thats it.

FFSnotanotherone · 24/10/2019 14:01

Anyone see Kathy Burke's programme on women recently? She spoke to a professor who said we can do without romantic love in our life but without friends and a support network we really would be stuffed.

Resonates with me. Like a pp I would struggle without my support network. Means I live rather than jump limp along surviving waiting to die.

bruce43mydog · 24/10/2019 14:02

No friends

misspiggy19 · 24/10/2019 14:03

8 close friends who would drop everything if I needed them. Around another 15 friends who I see often. Doesn’t take a lot of effort either

ParkheadParadise · 24/10/2019 14:04

I have 2 friends from primary school.
I have 3 sisters who I'm really close too and see alot.
I've met several new friends since having Dd2.
DH and I have friends that we will meet up with and in the past gone on holiday with.

lioness88 · 24/10/2019 14:05

3 close friends. It was 4 until earlier this year my oldest friend stopped speaking to me when I became pregnant. My baby is 6 weeks old now and not so much as a text from her.

No mum friends yet, apart from a couple of friends I know who already have toddler age kids. But I didn't make lifelong friends at antenatal or anything.

Dollywilde · 24/10/2019 14:06

I just ran through a list in my head and I'd say:

12 friends who I would meet up with on a one-to-one basis for drinks or dinner
1 sister, who I'm close to - we go away for weekends etc etc
Another 12 who I'm friends with but would meet up with in a group
A further 20 or so who are more DH's friends than mine but I still go away for weekends with, get on well with, occasionally meet up without DH if he's not around.

Definitely takes cultivation though and we don't have DC yet which obviously changes things.

I didn't have any friends as a child and these are all people I've met since the age of 18. I do get sad sometimes that, with the exception of my sister, there's no-one I can reminisce with about stuff we did as kids/teenagers. Still, I know I'm very lucky.

isayhitocats · 24/10/2019 14:13

None

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 24/10/2019 14:14

1 best friend from school. I barely see her but we talk/text most days.
2 very close friends who have helped me through bad times and vice versa.
3 uni friends who I see maybe 4/5 times a year and chat to frequently.

I have lots of looser friends through the nature of my work who I socialize with frequently, but we probably wouldn't invite each other to weddings.

Two separate groups of mum friends who I see regularly.

Gertie75 · 24/10/2019 14:41

I wonder if the amount of friends depends on how we define someone as a friend.

I have one best friend who I've known since school over 30 years ago, we've gone through so much together and I know we'll be friends for life.

I have other people I know from post natal group and school, we go out from time to time and meet up with the kids in holidays, I do consider them friends but I'm doubtful we'll keep in touch once the kids have left school.

I'm never sure when someone moves from being an acquaintance to a friend.

Mintjulia · 24/10/2019 14:47

Three close friends, two female, locally and one male 80 miles away. And sisters.

bluetue · 24/10/2019 15:16

2

Lots of other acquaintances that I enjoy spending time with but wouldn't call friends

Generally get on well with colleagues, family and fellow students. But wouldn't call these friends as such.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 24/10/2019 15:21

I have one of my sisters, two mates from uni, some PhD friends and a DH. Everyone else is acquaintance or distant pal, usually old work colleagues. I have ASD and am introverted, although I'm not shy. I find it hard to keep a modern friendship going i.e. texting all the time etc. Also been treated very shabbily a few times so don't trust anyone anymore.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 24/10/2019 15:21

I have four people that I could call at 3am to help me bury a body, no questions asked. All five of us are not at all close to our families, or have lost significant family members, and so probably invest more in friendships.

Maybe 10 others with whom I'm friendly enough to go for drinks and a meal now and again?

ThighThighOfthigh · 24/10/2019 15:24

A best friend who would hide a body for me and vice versa for 30 years.

My Mum and, until very recently, my lovely Dad.

My adult sons.

Thighland.

Lots of acquaintances from dog walking etc.

Bonkerz · 24/10/2019 15:35

I 'know' lots of people.
I have 4 friends i class as sisters
And I have about 10 friends who I know would step up if I needed them without judgement.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/10/2019 15:41

3 closest friends who I have known since primary school.

3 others that I have known since secondary school.

3 more that I met through jobs/other friends.

All the rest are just acquaintances.

BearSoFair · 24/10/2019 15:50

Three close friends, 7 or 8 others I consider friends but don't see as often, we do make sure to keep in touch though. DH's two closest friends I'd probably call my friends as well, but differently to how I think of the friends I didn't meet through him, if that makes sense.
