How would you pronounce my baby name

My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

If say MeeAh too.

MyAh is Maia or Maya to me.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 20/10/2019 19:04

Mia - pronounced Mee - ah is a beautiful name. Unfortunately I know a few Mia's whose parents are unhappy that people pronounce the name as My-ah. My niece was called Aaliya. Nobody, including school, pronounced it Correctly. They either called her Aliya or Al- iy- a. Niece asked to change her name at 9 years old (she wasn't happy being known as Al-iy- a (A liar) so changed it to the nearest sounding name, Leah. She is now called Lee or Laya 🙄

Evie is a lovely, much simpler sounding name. Can you persuade DH to go with Evie OP?

Zeldasmagicwand · 20/10/2019 19:31

Tell DH that you've tried Mia but it isn't working for you so you're going to revert back to Evie.

Mee-ya.
Lovely name!

PurpleCrazyHorse · 20/10/2019 20:19

I think I would choose a new name you both like. You could have Evie Mia as middle names (one or both) if that would be a compromise.

DS has an unusual name where we live. It is difficult to guess the pronunciation from the spelling and people have to learn it. We're used to people asking what his name is, spelling it wrong etc. DS at 5yo will now correct people and recognise the incorrect spelling. However, we knew that would be the case and were happy with that. It's going to be a long time of being unhappy at correcting people if you don't love the name.

Thornhill58 · 20/10/2019 20:54

Use both names. Evie Mia. I'm Spanish speaker so I'll pronounce it Mi a. Always puzzled me why would people here name their children that way as it means Mine in Spanish.
Evie is very nice and sweet name.

Majorcollywobble · 20/10/2019 21:33

Anyone with any sense would say Mee- ah .
Don’t change it as it’s a lovely name .

In my experience

Mia - Mee-a
Maya - usually My-a sometimes May-a
Maia - May-a

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 20/10/2019 21:45

Pickle21 · 20/10/2019 21:46

Sorry It went into wrong post

Hadenoughofitall441 · 20/10/2019 22:39

I have a Cousin Calle Mia and it’s pronounces me-ah

BlouseAndSkirt · 20/10/2019 22:54

It is Mee-a

It is quite simply a mistake to pronounce ‘Mia’ as My-a.

But the important thing is that you are not happy with it.

Can you and DH compromise on Eva / Esme/ Ava/ Effie ?

Threeminis · 20/10/2019 22:58

My friends dd is Mee-ah
My niece is My-a

I work in early years and have always asked the parents when it comes to names like this.
For example Cory - Core-ay or Cor-ay (again I know one of each)

Threeminis · 20/10/2019 23:04

After having rtft I think you need to speak to your dh again.
If Evie wasn't an option would you consider anything else??

RoseMartha · 20/10/2019 23:11

Mee-ah

Smelborp · 21/10/2019 00:00

There still plenty of time to change her name, particularly as you haven’t yet registered the birth. If you’re crying over it daily then it needs to be looked at again, your DH doesn’t get to unilaterally decide. Why did he decide against Evie?

Hollyhobbi · 21/10/2019 00:54

Why would Maya not be pronounced May a?

WorriedSENMum · 21/10/2019 01:32

Choose the name you want OP. Give her your surname too. Your H sounds like my ex. Flowers

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 21/10/2019 01:40

It never would have occurred to me to say anything other than me-ah. Lovely name.
