My little girl is called Mia but people are saying it differently and it’s really annoying me! I pronounce it Mia as in mee-ah but she keeps getting calling mya, she’s only 10 days old and it’s putting me off it to the point of changing it.

I would pronounce Maya as May Ah
Not Mya. I know 3 Maya’s all pronounced May Ah. Never heard of Mia being pronounced as Mya. Mia is a lovely name op I’d stick with it.

mathanxiety · 21/10/2019 02:39

Mee-ah.

Don't go back to Evie. People will pronounce it EEvie.

But don't accept being railroaded.
If he won't agree to Evie and Mia is causing problems, then maybe choose a third name you can both agree on.

.......
I would pronounce Maya and Maia 'My-ah'.

Mya (pr. My-ah) is a NN for Jeremiah that was very common in SW Ireland.

Tweetingmagpie · 21/10/2019 02:48

Mia is me a and maya is my a, in my experience.

Lovely name Smile

Mya. I've taught many children in the last 4 years with this name and spelling (it's become quite common). It's always been mya. Now almost to be different parents if this intake are saying it's not mya it's meea. No judgement

Redshoesandtheblues · 21/10/2019 05:58

Mia is Me-ah. As in mia farrow.

Redshoesandtheblues · 21/10/2019 06:02

Mya is my- yah.

Redshoesandtheblues · 21/10/2019 06:04

Both lovely names but totally different. In pronunciation.

BasiliskStare · 21/10/2019 06:07

I would say Mee - ah as well. I have a niece and she is Maya which is said My - ah. I think they are two different names ( niece lives in a different country so different pronunciation rules may apply but that is how her parents and she have always pronounced it )

I know quite a few mias and each one is pronounced mee-ya. It's a lovely name but way to popular imo

Alwayshangryhangry · 21/10/2019 07:19

I find this name tricky! I know a Mia pronounced Mee-ah and one pronounced mi- yah

HerculesTheBercules · 21/10/2019 07:22

Call her Evie Mia . You did all the hard work, he should not be allowed to force through a name that makes you unhappy

Lilonetwo · 21/10/2019 07:23

Mia= Mee-ya
Mya= My-a

NoSauce · 21/10/2019 07:42

As in Farrow.
To me my-ah is spelt Maia

I agree.

zzzzzzzx · 21/10/2019 07:53

I'd say Mee-a. I know one Maya (pronounced May-a) and one Maja (who is Polish) pronounced (My-a).

myidentitymycrisis · 21/10/2019 07:55

Mee-ah , I’d say
Used to know a Maia that was pronounced My-ah same as Gaia

Katisha · 21/10/2019 07:56

Mind you Evie isnt straightforward either. I know one pronounced Evvy

Itstheprinciple · 21/10/2019 08:38

I work in a school. We've had several Mias, Myahs, Mayas over recent years. In my experience Mia is said Meeya but honestly there's no guarantee! We've had every combination of spellings and pronunciations!

Theflying19 · 21/10/2019 17:56

I know a lot of Mee-a My-a and May-a s and they are all spelt similarly. (so Mia or Maya or Maia). I think your is most likely to be the first, but I wouldn't be sure.

It's not too late to change. It'll just be a story to tell one day!

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 21/10/2019 22:20

I'd initially pronounce it Mya, I think.

What about Maddie? (Somewhere between Mia and Evie?)

mathanxiety · 22/10/2019 01:15

Evvy is surely the standard pronunciation for Evie?

It was my grandmother's name.

The many little Evies I know are all Evvie (rhymes with heavy).

RolytheRhino · 22/10/2019 07:29

Evvy is surely the standard pronunciation for Evie?

I'd have said Eevee (like the Pokémon). I suppose Evvy makes more sense if the full name is Evelyn, but Eevee if it's a pet name for Eve or Eva. If it's given as a name on its own, it could be either.

RolytheRhino · 22/10/2019 07:30

*or Evangeline

Damntheman · 22/10/2019 09:39

Mee-ah is standard for Mia.

The only My-a people I know are Maja or Maya.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/10/2019 11:19

The many little Evies I know are all Evvie (rhymes with heavy).

Wtf?!

No.

I literally know about 10-12 Evies located from Scotland to Bournemouth via North Wales, Durham, London and they are all called Eee-vee. I've never ever heard Evvy. Where are you based mathanxiety?
