Make fish cakes?
Use instead of tuna in a Niçoise salad?

Batinahat · 19/10/2019 21:16

I just made a smoked mackerel pate and my children are now moaning about the smell. It's delicious. They're weird.

elephantoverthehill · 19/10/2019 21:23

This. Ds2 loves it,

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 19/10/2019 21:26

I find it a bit dismal and boring to eat on it's own with salad Sad. It's like some retro 1970s WeightWatchers suggestion.

You want to flake it up, mash with Philadelphia cream cheese and have it on thin, hot very brown toast with black pepper and a squeeze of lemon.

RNBrie · 19/10/2019 21:29

@batinahat, that's one of our favourite recipes. 5 ingredients, super delicious!!

savingforsomewherefarfaraway · 19/10/2019 21:32

Grill it and serve with roasted tomatoes and pan fried buttered green beans

Eeeeek2 · 19/10/2019 21:34

Spaghetti carbonara with mackerel yum yum

Bluerussian · 19/10/2019 21:36

Used to have that fairly often and liked it, as a starter. Just as it was, on a plate with some garnish.

It always gave me indigestion so I stopped having it. It is nice though.

Yes, I'm sure it would work in a risotto or a kedgeree.

emwithme · 19/10/2019 21:55

Scrambled eggs and mushrooms.

Would ideally be poached eggs but I can't cook them.

Don't despair, mine were similar, but they learned.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2019 22:41

I love it! As well as all the other suggestions there is an amazing noodle salad recipe on the waitrose site I think it is.

BuggertheTabloids · 19/10/2019 22:44

Shred and mix with creme fraiche. Truly delicious pâté

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/10/2019 22:48

Mackerel pate. Our family recipe is: flake the mackerel (I usually wear gloves to do this with my hands because it's easiest to detect bones), then mix with zest and juice of half a lemon, enough creme fraiche to loosen it, and a spoon of creamed horseradish. DS usually makes this with soda bread as a starter... I wonder if he's up for it tomorrow...

safariboot · 19/10/2019 23:18

Put it on a plate with some chips or potatoes and some veg and eat it. Yeah, I'm boring.

Heck, I might not even do that, I could just scoff it straight out of the packet.

bonzo77 · 19/10/2019 23:35

Bin it. In the wrapper so it doesn’t stink. Nasty things.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 19/10/2019 23:40

I like it with cauliflower cheese

WeeM · 19/10/2019 23:42

I just have it heated on toast!

knitandpearl · 19/10/2019 23:47

Cook penne pasta
Gently fry some chopped leeks then stir in the mackerel and some creme fraiche
Mix with the pasta into a dish, then put breadcrumbs and grated parmesan on top and grill it

That leek and egg thing looks lush!

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 23:53

I'd have it with cous cous, peppers, spring onions, parsely and olive oil.

BuffyFairy · 20/10/2019 00:11

Bed of spinach.

Quinoa, cucumber, red pepper and mango mixed up with curried yoghurt.

Mackerel flakes on top. Delicious!

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 20/10/2019 00:15

I would have it with a poached egg and steamed spinach (if I could get a minion to do the cooking for me).

SarahAndQuack · 20/10/2019 02:04

All of these sound delicious (except for the heretic who wants to bin it!). But my vote is for included in/as the makings of a delicious fish pie or tart. A good white sauce with plenty of lemon zest and dill for the filling, mixed with mackerel. You could add other fish but it's really good with leeks and spring onions and nothing else. Then your usual fish pie top.

DramaAlpaca · 20/10/2019 02:16

Another vote for binning the nasty, stinky stuff... in a sealed plastic bag so the bin doesn't smell. I make no apologies, I detest everything about fish Grin

Giggorata · 20/10/2019 02:34

Pate, in fish pie and flaked into an eggy quiche filling, to be eaten hot or cold.
