How much does your weekly food shop cost?

In a serious attempt to save money! Really cutting back on items and using more store own brand items as well. Also trying to go to different shops for the best deal - I have pretty much all major supermarkets and home bargains/ b and m etc close by.

DP says that shopping is just generally expensive and that's it! He does all the cooking and makes everything from scratch.

Family of 4 (DC ages 6 and 3) and we can be around 70/80 a week. That would be what I classify as "the big shop" washing powder, toothpaste etc. Even a standard shop can be around 60.

Genuinely interested if this is an average cost or if I can shop a bit smarter.

I think that’s fairly cheap!

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 22:40

Where do you shop and is it just stuff you need? I have a family of four and spend about 50 per week in aldi... thats not including alcohol wich we have to go back and get lol but if its just on food your talking about ...?

bellsbuss · 16/10/2019 22:42

Family of 6, I thought I was spending around £125 but when I added it up it was more around £160. Noticed a big increase the last 6 months.

Yubaba · 16/10/2019 22:44

We are a family of 5, we spend about £140 a week.
We don’t scrimp and buy a mix of brands and own brand. We have milk delivered which is a bit more expensive but I like for the ease and the DC take a pack lunch to school everyday.

prettyretro · 16/10/2019 22:44

Sorry if it's just for food can be about 60 (including the staples like milk, fresh juice, toilet roll etc) for that week.

A big shop for things like washing powder, tooth paste, tomato/ brown sauce stuff I wouldn't need to replenish each week but maybe every 3 then I'd be looking at nearer 80.

If it's an average price or fairly cheap then so be it! I was genuinely interested if this is an average price for a shop or not (sounds really weird why I'm so interested I know but honestly just very curious!) Just looking for some cost cutting measures and my first thought was the weekly shop.

@bellsbuss that's what I was talking about with my DP tonight! I use scan and shop now and I can look at my trolly and have hardly anything in it and the total can be around £40 which just makes my jaw drop!

About £90. Three of us, but DD is only 8mo. We could save in certain areas and could probably get it down to about £70 fairly easily without much in the way of sacrifices.

Longlongsummer · 16/10/2019 22:49

I spend around £120 each week on shopping for four people. Including packed lunches and household stuff.

DP thinks it’s way too much, he has no idea!

I’d say it’s not super budget. But it’s not as much as everyone I know. My fridge is never full, other people’s are bulging over!

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 22:51

Then i think that sounds about right, i hate the fabric softener and all that jazz shop its the worst, but i do find shopping at aldi keeps the cost down alot, although we cant get everything there! But i didnt realise how mich we were spending untill i swapped

mamalovebird · 16/10/2019 22:51

We're a family of 4 and spend around £120 a week at Aldi.

Mumofboth · 16/10/2019 22:52

Anything from £100-150 on a family of four and that only includes lunch for one. The only way I could reduce it is if I had more at storage space and could buy bulk. By the tine I’ve paid for school meals too it’s a lot.

Longlongsummer · 16/10/2019 22:52

@kkeeb 50 for four for food sounds very cheap. That is basically £12 each person for the whole, week!

tenmum · 16/10/2019 22:53

2 adults and a toddler ... £60 a week in tescos

AthollPlace · 16/10/2019 22:55

I genuinely don’t understand how people spend so little! We are two adults plus toddler DC and we spend £100 on average. Some weeks that includes cleaning supplies, other weeks it includes stocking up on basics or buying beer. This week I spent £9 on Fairy laundry detergent, £6 on a four pack of beer and a fiver on a roast chicken. There’s £20 for starters! And that’s a quarter of some people’s budget?

Longlongsummer · 16/10/2019 22:56

Does that include all meals and snacks though everyone?

My £120 a week for four is everything. Four people’s lunches. Coffee. Alcohol. No nipping out to the shop mid week?

As I did find many people say their shop weekly is X, but that they didn’t count lunches, take aways, alcohol, snacks, coffees etc.

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 22:58

To be fair my partner works away alot and im litteraly talking about stuff i need for mes, my dd has school meals so pay 10.50 a week for that , and we go out to eat too. But i can spend 50 and make meals for 4 for 5 days, not 7 , im jist taling food , nothing else

JenniferM1989 · 16/10/2019 22:58

Me, DH and 3 year old son. £55-£60 a week in asda, £5 a week in co-op for a top up shop of milk and bread then about £40 a month buying cleaning products, toilet roll etc and toiletries. So weekly it works out about £70-£75 a week. I work from home through so all my coffees, snacks and meals are from home and I don't like cheap coffee!

I also use smol so laundry gel/powder isn't included.

prettyretro · 16/10/2019 23:01

I've not included things like alcohol in either cost of shops - that we would buy separately if we were having any. Purely just things needed for that week for dinners/ lunches/ breakfast and essentials that week.

tigerbear · 16/10/2019 23:04

2 adults, one DD aged 8. We spend around £80-90 a week, inc alcohol. Often buy top ups of bread, milk etc during the week on top.

notso · 16/10/2019 23:06

We budget for £150 a week there's 6 of us although DD is away at university and DH works away Mon to Fri,
Includes all food including a few school dinners each week,
cleaning products and toiletries,
hay and food for pets,
£30 a week for DD in university,
the odd birthday card or non grocery item,
Randomly our Netflix subscription,

pooboobsleeprepeat · 16/10/2019 23:08

Family of 4 all eating 3 meals per day plus snacks is around £65. We eat a plant based diet and try to eat as much seasonal produce as possible.

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 23:09

Everyones saying how cheap this is, family of 4 , 5 days a week, i spend 50 in aldi, i wont bore you with my actual lost but will be happy be share if anyone wants x

StateOfMind · 16/10/2019 23:09

Family of 3 here (me and 2 DCs). I spend £30-£35 usually. I’m a single parent on a a paltry salary and so have to budget carefully.

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 23:10

I mean list

TreacherousPissFlap · 16/10/2019 23:15

There three of us, DH and I and DS(15)

I budget £100 a week and we shop at Waitrose. That does three meals a day, seven days a week.

I don't subtract from that amount if we have a takeaway one night or are eating out, but any excess goes back into the groceries pot for another day.

We mostly home cook and always menu plan and order online.
