How much does your weekly food shop cost?

In a serious attempt to save money! Really cutting back on items and using more store own brand items as well. Also trying to go to different shops for the best deal - I have pretty much all major supermarkets and home bargains/ b and m etc close by.

DP says that shopping is just generally expensive and that's it! He does all the cooking and makes everything from scratch.

Family of 4 (DC ages 6 and 3) and we can be around 70/80 a week. That would be what I classify as "the big shop" washing powder, toothpaste etc. Even a standard shop can be around 60.

Genuinely interested if this is an average cost or if I can shop a bit smarter.

i spend 50 in aldi, i wont bore you with my actual lost
I would actually love to know what you eat! This week I spent a fiver on crisps and another fiver on ice cream. And that’s a fifth of your entire shop?

Kbeeb1992 · 16/10/2019 23:24

IM litteraly taling about what i make for family meals and lunch, luch is basically me as my partner is away alot and my two year is sooo fussy... sooo i but a big turkey mince and a big thing of chicken breasts, bread , eggs and various veg, usually make burgers and bologneis with turkey mince and chicken and baked potatoes with salad or homemade chicken nuggets and chips, past and pasta sauce with cheese also makes a meal, and we have omelette alot too , we dont buy treats and stuff untill friday so im not including that stuff .

pikapikachu · 16/10/2019 23:27

Me and 3 teens- £120 a week including al cleaning stuff and toiletries.

We eat one take away a week which isn't included in the above.

Pyjamaface · 16/10/2019 23:33

I do a big shop once a month of about £100/120 which includes the cleaning stuff and toiletries

Then a top up mid-month of about £60 And then bread and milk every 3/4 days

So probably averages out to just over £50 a week for 3 of us

prettyretro · 17/10/2019 06:05

Sorry 3 year old woke up with a bad dream and I was shattered by time he settled again and fell asleep.

Really interesting to see difference in shopping! I guess overall mines doesn't seem to bag!

@pooboobsleeprepeat for mainly plant based that seems good! I've tried to adapt and make small changes for myself but found the jump in price too much - can I ask what type of things you buy for breakfasts/ lunches?

@Kbeeb1992 sounds like you manage a varied menu and meal plan well for your spending!

We spend about £120 a week for 4 of us inc 2 DCs (baby and a toddler) that's Aldi and Morrison's with off trip to Tesco

soupmaker · 17/10/2019 06:36

We spend about £100 a week for a family of four, includes three daily packed lunches during the week, and all cleaning stuff, bottle of wine, and fish from the fish van. We have a lovely neighbour who drops bread rolls in every other day which means we don't buy a lot of bread! I menu plan and shop in Aldi.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 17/10/2019 06:50

Shop at Aldi!

Family of 4 here- 2 adults, 7 yo & 5yo.

I'd say we spend about £60 per week but could probably do it for less.
If I worked out how much the meals actually costs (No extras) I'd say about £40 per week.

2anddone · 17/10/2019 06:59

I sip at Aldi there is me and 2dc (14 and 11) I meal plan and only buy what I need plus one treat item. Spend between £35-45 a week (dc have school dinners each day)

Thatnovembernight · 17/10/2019 07:05

Family of 3 (myself and two children). We spend £45 a week for food plus all the extras like loo roll, shampoo, soap, laundry stuff, light bulbs etc. I use the Tesco delivery service at £3.49 a month. Saves me wasting my day off in the supermarket plus I can’t see all the fun extras that I’d end up buying!

Gimmechipschocolateandcake · 17/10/2019 07:15

About £60 -£70'fpr 5 of us. The fussy dc don't always eat their veg either. Also I buy too much laundry products

cptartapp · 17/10/2019 07:16

About £90- £100 all in. Two adults and two teenage boys.

prettyretro · 17/10/2019 07:30

Right I definitely still think I could get mine down considering a lot of you about the same price as me have teenagers or providing lunches, my oldest DC gets free school meals (entitlement in Scotland) and youngest gets lunch with my mum who watches them while I work (I give her money for doing so and she provides lunches and one dinner a week for them but that's on top of my shop already).

I'm a woman on a mission here! 😂😂

Around £100-£150 a week. For 2 adults and 2 kids.

I have started to do one shops for washing powder/dishwasher tablets etc and I got to a cash and carry type place. It costs me £36 for 2 months of stuff (give or take)

That doesn’t include pet food again I do a big online order monthly.

At the moment I don’t need any cleaning products as I seem to have a lot of them 🤦‍♀️ Stuff which has been hidden at the back of the cupboard!!! At least another 3 months worth looking at the overflow...

I have just ordered myself a small chest freezer and plan to start filling it up. So will spend £200 to fill it.

Camomila · 17/10/2019 09:39

About £60-£65. 2 adults and DS 3, usually go to Asda. DS is at nursery 3 days a week, it includes toiletries and cleaning products but neither of us really drink unless we go out so no alchohol.

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 17/10/2019 19:35

We are very guilty of going to Aldi and doing a 60-70 shop and feeling quite pleased with ourselves ... then one of us fancies a treat so it’s £10/15 in Tesco, we realise we have no ketchup for dinner or have run out of washing detergent and it’s back to the shop and the same again spent.

So I did a shop online at Asda today and spent £95 but it was a proper, honest shop with meals for all week, the fizzy juice we always drink, treats and a massive washing powder and fabric conditioner. I’m hoping I don’t need to step foot in a shop again until next weekend but I may take a single pound coin into the Co-op tomorrow for some chocolate.

We’re really trying to clamp down on our spending but we are so so good at lying to ourselves then wondering where the money is!

prettyretro · 17/10/2019 20:30

@Itsrebekahvardysaccount

First off love the username...bravo! 😂😂😂

Looking at my online banking that's exactly what we do so I do need to just stop it!

How did you find sell by dates on online shopping? I've never done it before cause of that.

Family of five, two adults and three kids under 12. This week I spent £50 but around £50-£60 is typical for us.

My tips are to shop in Lidl or Aldi if you can and limit meat and dairy. We are only having meat twice this week and I generally go for mince and chicken.

Tbf your shop isn’t ridiculous or over the top in my opinion.

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 17/10/2019 20:37

Thanks Wink

I do have to watch what I’m buying and when I’m planning meals I would make sure anything with fresh veg was on the day of the shop or day or so after. Obviously some things can be frozen.

SamBeckett · 17/10/2019 20:53

Mine is normally around £60 per week but that is everything , inc booze ( well AF booze ) if i dont get it on the weekly shop I wait till next week cos I can not go into a shop and buy just the one thing I wanted ( can anyone ?)
But last weekend I seem to run out of all the stuff I only buy monthly(ish) like toilet roll , kitchen roll , tin foil , soap powder , washing up liquid etc . I was shopping on line my lap top nearly fainted and my wallet went and hid under the sofa ! Shock

foobio · 17/10/2019 21:03

£115 for 4 adults & 1 toddler. No meat, but usually includes an Aldi special buy! Includes cleaning products and wine on rotation.

foobio · 17/10/2019 21:06

^^ actually, the shop only usually lasts 6 days and I do a midweek top up of bread and milk, so more like £140 pro rata!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/10/2019 21:17

Around 70 pound for everything.2 adults one 5 yr old ds.

Schwesterherz · 17/10/2019 21:22

I spend £120 on a family of five. Sometimes more when we have extra family. That's excluding the milk and veg delivery, which I'd rather not think about!
