How much does your weekly food shop cost?

In a serious attempt to save money! Really cutting back on items and using more store own brand items as well. Also trying to go to different shops for the best deal - I have pretty much all major supermarkets and home bargains/ b and m etc close by.

DP says that shopping is just generally expensive and that's it! He does all the cooking and makes everything from scratch.

Family of 4 (DC ages 6 and 3) and we can be around 70/80 a week. That would be what I classify as "the big shop" washing powder, toothpaste etc. Even a standard shop can be around 60.

Genuinely interested if this is an average cost or if I can shop a bit smarter.

£80 a week here including all household bits and toiletries plus cat food/litter. £60 if it's before payday and I'm absolutely scrimping it and just cooking basic dinners and no treats. That's 2 adults & 2 DC (8 & 1). 8yr old has school dinners which are £35-40 a month on top of that. I cook from scratch and have a ton of herbs, spices, oils and tins of beans and tomatoes already which helps a lot. And I meal plan. I really enjoy food though: cooking, eating, meal planning etc. Those £60 weeks are pretty rubbish so I prefer to spend a bit more and enjoy it.

trendingsomewhere · 19/10/2019 12:48

I probably spent £60 pw for me, small dog & cat.
I don't eat out much (when I do it's on company expenses) or have any take-aways - but I shop mostly at Aldi - am mostly vegetarian (by organic fr chicken once a week & salmon once a week).

I think I would struggle to get it any cheaper than that! I have already switched from Waitrose to Aldi to reduce costs.

InsertFunnyUsername · 19/10/2019 12:48

Around 50 a week in Lidl food shop. We eat well and have a packed out fruit and veg selection but it's only me and DD 18mo home for lunches, I rarely eat lunch so it balances out. We have Me, DP, a teen and DD at home. If we all needed lunch I'm sure it would jump up.

InsertFunnyUsername · 19/10/2019 12:50

Oh also around £15 a week for 2 cats and 2 dogs but we buy that in bulk so I always forget to include that!

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2019 12:53

Trending, £60 pw for one person?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 19/10/2019 12:56

About £50 a week for myself and one DS. Includes toiletries and household items.

We eat meat or fish most days and fresh fruit and veg every day. I batch cook a lot.

MagicKingdom · 19/10/2019 12:56

2 adults, 3 & 1 year old - we spend £600-700 a month on food shopping.
This includes nappies/wipes/cleaning.

@likeridingabike

I know it won't ever be like for like. I started the thread with my own costs and was just interested in others cost of shopping. I've felt there's been a huge rise of late in the cost of shopping and was wondering what on average others spend and if they were also feeling the pinch of rising costs.

I spend about that on just the two of us

mindproject · 19/10/2019 13:30

1 adult, 1 teenager, 1 cat.

I spend £40, that includes everything.

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 13:33

Heismyopendoor and FurryDogMother - thanjs. Not so very different from my own meals. I don't know where im going wrong.

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2019 13:41

Where do you shop Margarita? I’ve found meals don’t cost a lot it’s all the other things. Endless snacks and biscuits or crisps, lots of meat and dairy doesn’t help either, pre packaged and convenience foods, expensive cleaning products and toiletries.

banskuwansku · 19/10/2019 13:41

Between £80-130 a week plus milk man. Two adults and two primary aged kids.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 19/10/2019 13:51

About 95€ per week
4 more or less adults
including things like washing powder / toiletries / loo roll / school meals / non essentials like sweets,
excluding things for the cat.
(no ready meals - not a thing here, no alcohol that's private spends)
We shop at Aldi / Lidl / Penny.

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 14:37

Heismyopendoor - Lidl for most stuff. Morrisons for meat and eggs. Tesco for toilet paper because it's cheaper and things like Asian stuff they don't have in Lidl. I cook from scratch 9 times out of ten. We do eat too much meat, cheese and fish but that's all i can think of.

Jaffacakebeast · 19/10/2019 14:52

I’ve come to the realisation that a weekly shop is expensive, no matter what shop I go to. Now I just go to Aldi/Tesco/asda or what ever I’m passing every 2/3 days and get what we need, I tend to spend about 15/20 quid a time. It’s a ballache after work in bad weather and it’s dark but it does save us money and we don’t have any waste

speakout · 19/10/2019 15:04

Jaffacakebeast

I don't do a weekly shop either. A lot of produce- fruit etc won't last for a week, I like to buy fresh stuff often. I shop 4 or 5 times a week different shops, always find bargains etc.
I tend to fly into a shop early, on my way to the gym, as I come back from the post offeice etc, or if I am out visiting other shops.

I go to the post office every day, and both a Morrisons and Lidl are on the way back, I can fly into the supermarket, grab what I want and out again in 10 minutes.
An ALDI and Tesco are near my gym, so I can again go in early when it is quiet in the morning.
I don't shop at busy times- Saturday etc- unless it is very early, as 8am. I don;t like crowds or haveing to line up at a check out.

Chickydoo · 19/10/2019 15:20

Around £150-£160 a week
Also £30 on pet food & supplies.

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2019 21:43

How much do you spend margarita and for how many? I had a look but couldn’t see in previous posts, sorry if I’ve missed it :)

stoplickingthetelly · 19/10/2019 21:57

It’s usually around £100 per week, sometimes a bit more or a bit less. Rarely goes over £125, but never under £90. We’re a family of 4 (dc are 7&4). This includes lunches for me and dh, but 7 year old in year 2 has free school lunches and 4 year old has lunch at childminders 3 times a week. Do a quick top up at co-op, otherwise we use ASDA or Morrison’s. Food shopping is very expensive.

EmmiJay · 19/10/2019 22:24

Pfft. Too much.
£250 a month for the super huge shop, including all the soap powders, conditioners, hoover filters, drinks, meats etc.
Then roughly £60 per week on top up shopping for packed lunches and breakfasts, snacks. Its only 2 of us really.

Wherecanwegetoff123 · 19/10/2019 22:39

120-140 a week
2 adults. 4 dc. 2 in nappies and 2 take packed lunch to school. We don't scrimp but the day before the next shop the cupboard is quite bare. We also don't buy meat at the supermarket. We buy that seperatley but not much. maybe £10 a week sometimes more.
I do it online. Utilising as many vouchers as possible and so I can see the basket and take out things j don't actually need

margaritasbythesea · 20/10/2019 00:07

Heismyopendoor around £100 £120 a week. That doesn't include school dinners. Two adults, two kids-one a hungry teen. It seems far too much.

margaritasbythesea · 20/10/2019 00:08

Oh, and two kittens.

crimsonlake · 20/10/2019 00:56

The people recommending Aldi.... have you not noticed how much everything has gone up there?
