How much does your weekly food shop cost?

In a serious attempt to save money! Really cutting back on items and using more store own brand items as well. Also trying to go to different shops for the best deal - I have pretty much all major supermarkets and home bargains/ b and m etc close by.

DP says that shopping is just generally expensive and that's it! He does all the cooking and makes everything from scratch.

Family of 4 (DC ages 6 and 3) and we can be around 70/80 a week. That would be what I classify as "the big shop" washing powder, toothpaste etc. Even a standard shop can be around 60.

Genuinely interested if this is an average cost or if I can shop a bit smarter.

Wow that’s a lot of money Schwesterherz, what do you buy? What do you meals look like for the week?

speakout · 19/10/2019 08:00

I don;t actually know.

I cook mostly from scratch, and don't throw a lot away, I buy cheaper brands when I can, but we do like fruit a lot. I tend to use a few different shops and OH buys some of the shopping.
I also keep bulk supplies in the garage, so if I see non perishables on special offer I will bulk buy.
I would guess I spend maybe £140 a week- 5 adults, but that figure could be way off the mark.

circleorsquare · 19/10/2019 08:08

I think it's easier to save money if yeh have money. For example I bought 6 blocks of Lidl cheese last weekend on their super weekend special- £2.39 for 800g of mature cheddar- the cheese I'd normally buy but much cheaper. Last night I popped in and got 6 of their washing liquid which was down to 99p. I'm also shop around according to offers and vouchers making sure I know the prices so can see if it's worth getting. This means some weeks I don't need to shop at all really (apart from fresh veg/fruit).

I buy large pasta bags and the same for rice too.

Lidl this week has really cheap cauliflower so I'm already making Christmas dinner cauliflower cheese to freeze! Sad I know Blush

Ragwort · 19/10/2019 08:16

There’s only two of us at home now and I ‘roughly’ budget about £10 a day for meals, DH & I are often at home for lunch or I take a packed lunch. But when you add on the alcohol it takes it up to about £100 per week Blush. But we can afford it and I could buy cheaper by using Aldi, I go there occasionally but don’t really like it.

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2019 08:17

Circle I do the same with the Lidl offers!! Our cheese offer was different up here in Scotland but I got six blocks too 😂

TipseyTorvey · 19/10/2019 08:25

Ours was tightly budgeted at £125 five years ago which includes alcohol, lunches and cleaning stuff but it's crept up and up til it's about £160 now. I really need to reign it in but I'm usually doing the shop on my phone app in 5 dull mins on a work call so just reorder the same as the week before plus or minus a few things. 2 adult, 2 DC under ten. I think a more focused approach is needed.

What freaks me out is when we have visitors over and decide to cook something nice, get in olives and nibbles and much nicer wine than usual. That can easily add £70 to the bill. We don't socialise that much thank goodness.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 19/10/2019 08:32

We used to spent £60 on average mostly fromALdi, very little meat (veggie DH), dairy alternative (from Tesco for allergy child) but now I have a new baby and buy convince food from Tesco it’s about £120.

Allthepinkunicorns · 19/10/2019 08:35

We spend between £50-£65 a week on food for 3 of us. I do an online food shop at Sainsbury's and that includes food and laundry/cleaning products. We generally cook from scratch and my dh is a vegetarian so we have a little bit of meat on the shop but not much. I probably could spend less in Aldi or lidl but it's easier to shop online for me.

YahBasic · 19/10/2019 08:49

Between 25-35 per week for DH and I in Aldi.

I don’t eat breakfast but that covers all evening meals and most lunches.

We pay for a cleaner who brings her own products so don’t pay for those and we aren’t massive drinkers generally.

Grammar · 19/10/2019 08:53

I spend about £40 with tesco online ( not tempted to veer into extras, but having said that, i quite like to see what's new, now and then) that's for 3 adults. ( 1 veggie)
I will probably spend an extra £20 over the week by "nipping to the Spar" across the road

LittleCandle · 19/10/2019 08:57

On average, we spend about £40-45 per week in Lidl. That includes some of the dog food and dog treats. It might go up a bit if we need soap powder and find something interesting in the middle of Lidl! We do spend a bit in Tesco, mostly for the very few things we can't get in Lidl. We cook from scratch most nights, but do have things in the freezer for when we can't be arsed and buy stir fry packs of veg. We have almost no food waste - just chopped up bits. It is rare for us to have food go off, as we only buy enough for the week.

Stravapalava · 19/10/2019 09:30

If I do online shopping, even with branded stuff from Tesco or Morrisons etc, it's between £70 and £90 for a family of 4 with primary age DC, plus an old and fussy DCat. This includes packed lunch stuff.

I meal plan, cook every night and plan for leftovers as well to keep the costs down.

Binforky · 19/10/2019 09:32

Family of 4 (me and three children) £60 a week including things such as cleaning products but times are tough and we seem to eat the same boring meals every week.

margaritasbythesea · 19/10/2019 09:35

I'm always depressed by these threads as I spend so muxh more than most. What on earth are you all cooking?

isitxmasyet · 19/10/2019 09:54

Four of us
Rarely need to provide lunch for any of us
Doesn’t include pet food
Eat out about one night a week or maybe a weekend lunch

Ocado
£200 a week with cleaning products

Heismyopendoor · 19/10/2019 10:07

Margarita, this week for dinners we are having/had

Homemade kfc
Meat free enchiladas
Cottage pie
Potato and cauliflower tacos with fixings
Home made pizza
Toast and beans

Breakfast are usually smoothies or porridge with a variety of toppings. Lunches are sandwiches, homemade hummus and pita and veg, homemade soup and toastie, etc

Snacks are fruit, yogurts, nuts, cereal bars and homemade protein balls.

namechangenumber2 · 19/10/2019 10:42

Family of 4 - but that includes a 16 year old boy....

We spend roughly between £110-130 a week. Includes toiletries and cleaning stuff. We're not drinkers so no alcohol

I'm trying to cut back, so have moved to own brand washing powder etc

Banana770 · 19/10/2019 10:46

Around £70 a week for two adults and two children under four here. We eat little meat and don’t drink much alcohol so that keeps costs down, as does shopping at Aldi.

likeridingabike · 19/10/2019 11:37

These threads are never comparing like for like, it makes a big difference if one food shop includes lunches for two adults and someone else's doesn't because they buy lunch out at work, those costs would need to be added in, also school lunch costs, meals out, take aways, bits you pick up with milk on the way home etc. etc.

YahBasic · 19/10/2019 11:44

Most people on here have included that information though, @likeridingabike

CakeNinja · 19/10/2019 11:55

It averages out as £250 a week roughly.
Family of 5, 2 teens and one 8 year old who eats like a teen! No pets.
We eat well. This pretty much includes packed lunches for 3 of us, dp sometimes comes home to eat or gets something out, dd2 buys lunch at school.
I do a mix of both.
Normally includes things like washing stuff, dishwasher tablets/rinse aid, loo roll, Someone always needs shampoo and conditioner, always seems to be something like the kettle filters or light bulbs or batteries to replace.
Main shop comes to around £175 a week and then £75 throughout the week in topping up or getting lunch out.
This doesn’t take into account going out for dinner etc but I don’t count that in with the food shop.

JenniferM1989 · 19/10/2019 12:07

I didn't include eating out or take aways in my figure as I thought it was strictly food/household shop?

As I said, it averages at £70-£75 a week for food, cleaning products and toiletries for 2 adults and 3 year old plus a cat but we get pizza each Friday and eat out for lunches and stuff but that's extra on top of what I spend on shopping

FurryDogMother · 19/10/2019 12:09

I'm impressed with most posters above - I spend around €100 a week just for 2 adults (plus 2 dogs and a cat) rising to 4 adults for Sunday lunch. That does include loo rolls etc., but I've never really thought I'm being extravagant. The total includes roughly €12 on beer - but that's the only indulgence. I do the '3 for 10' Tesco offer for the main meat ingredients, and buy very little processed food - except for Friday night food when we have Scotch eggs, pork pies and similar as nibbles, to give me a night off from cooking. We never have takeaways (mainly because there aren't any here) or delivery food. I suppose I could reduce the weekly spend if I had to, but I don't (I know, we're lucky).

ClientListQueen · 19/10/2019 12:12

Between £40-60 for me weekly depending whether I need cleaning stuff/toiletries/cat food etc
Done a shop today that's purely food and it's come in at £42, that's for work lunches as well

FurryDogMother · 19/10/2019 12:15

Oh, just to add (as someone requested above) the sort of meals we have - this week we've had:

Tandoori roast chicken, mushroom bhaji, plain rice
Tesco burrito burgers, burger buns, salad and chips
Shepherds pie and baked beans
Steak and kidney pie, baked beans, chips
Roast lamb, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds, carrots, parsnips, courgettes, followed by a tarte Tatin and cream (that was last Sunday's roast for 4)

Also eggs and bacon for breakfasts, and yoghurts. We tend to just have 2 meals a day, and don't snack.
