Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl?

I've shopped in Sainsbury's since I left home but we need to save some money and a brand new aldi has just opened round the corner from us, we also have a Lidl about 5 mins drive away.
I've popped into both for a few bits before but neither have twin trollies so it's been a bit of a pain with a newborn and 3 year old twins running round Envy but our eldest 2 Dc have more hours at pre school now so I'm going to take the plunge and try and switch supermarket.

Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl food?

And is there anything particular I should look out for that's really good!?
My husband reckons Aldi do really nice knock off Kinder Bueno's that's he's had at work before!

Sainsbury's

Branleuse · 13/10/2019 18:32

I like them both but probably lidl for the bakery, but i love the farmhouse yoghurts in a glass jar from aldi. Also aldi coffee is better

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/10/2019 18:34

Aldi.

Every time I've been to lidl I've gotten rotten food.

bloodywhitecat · 13/10/2019 18:35

Aldi for me too.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/10/2019 18:35

I think it all depends on your local branch. Before a new Aldi opened near us, I wouldn't have gone in either, as the existing Aldi and the Lidl are really chaotic and just not very nice.

However, now we have a new Aldi, I alternate between there and Sainsbury's.

Poppins2016 · 13/10/2019 18:36

Aldi. Everything is slightly superior from a taste and shelf life perspective. Their baby products are also better! But I do love Lidl's bakery.

Shelby30 · 13/10/2019 18:36

Aldi wins for me, even though I like the bakery, for overall products and choice I like Aldi a lot more.

I've been to Lidl a couple of times recently as a new one opened up nearby but I def don't buy that much and find the products in Aldi a lot better. I did find some nappy pants this week though in Lidl, aldi don't do nappy pants.

When I go to Aldi I always buy loads and I love the flavoured water, the Lidl one tasted of very little.

Snowflake9 · 13/10/2019 18:36

Aldi! I find Lidl more expensive than aldi too.

Great aldi swaps :

Spirals are what your husband is referring too.

Hoops - hula hoops
Melts - skips
Cheese curls - quavers
Their mature cheddar is nice
Their fajita kits are good

I love their steaks and fresh extra special pizzas

All fruit and veg good. Just watch the dates.

Bread is rubbish though.

kimlo · 13/10/2019 18:36

Aldi, I really don't like lidl.

Snowflake9 · 13/10/2019 18:37

Oh and their bubbly bars !! Like aero but only 59p!!

We do eat healthy I swear. These are just a few treats we have every now and then.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/10/2019 18:38

Aldi

Have a lovely big Aldi near me still get a few things in Sainsbury’s but Aldi’s stock is improving all the time and costs are so much lower

ExpletiveDelighted · 13/10/2019 18:38

Lidl for the bakery, Aldi otherwise. Neither are great though. My rule of thumb is that the more processed it is the worse it is for both of them, so meat, fish, fruit and veg, cheese, flour, sugar, tinned fish etc are good.

Cereals, bread products, table and cooking sauces, processed cheese are not great and the really processed stuff like frozen pizzas is best avoided. You get what you pay for really.

poorbuthappy · 13/10/2019 18:39

Aldi. Lidl wine makes me throw up

butterybiscuitbasic · 13/10/2019 18:43

Definitely Aldi... I flit between most of the supermarkets (Sainsbury’s is my closest) and will literally do a shop one week in m&s and the next in Lidl - by far Aldi is my favourite of the budget ones

megletthesecond · 13/10/2019 18:44

Lidl sells gluten free food. But the stores are miserable.
Aldi is nicer but no gluten free.

I use both.

Coconutbug · 13/10/2019 18:51

Lidl. I find the fresh fruit and veg doesn't last as long from either tbh.
Lidl have some good knock of versions of stuff and often have a discounted section with branded items. I think you can get alot of the basics but any specialist items from the bigger supermarket like sainsburysm

Ffsonly46 · 13/10/2019 18:54

I do the majority of my shopping in our local Aldi, with supplementary items from Asda (certain brands).

I like the veg in Lidl as I find they have a bit more choice of individual items rather than prepacked, especially tomatoes, and their bakery is good if you buy lots of that type of product.

Great Aldi products;
cheese, cold meats, steak, yogurts, frozen meat and fish, cleaning products, toilet and kitchen roll, olive oil, rice and pasta and pretty much all their sweets and biscuits Grin

Amicompletelyinsane · 13/10/2019 18:56

Every time I go to lidl half my veg are rotten the next day or once I noticed before leaving the car park. I can't seem to do a full shop in lidl but find aldi much better

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/10/2019 18:57

I much prefer Lidl!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/10/2019 19:00

Aldi has some gluten free stuff too.

We use Aldi. Got some brandy infused dried fruit for the Christmas cake yesterday. Frozen individual dauphinoise potatoes, fruit scones, yogurt in glass jars, individual sachets of porridge, own brand Weetabix, smoked salmon, salmon flakes for sandwiches. Loads of stuff and the stock is getting bigger all the time.

Look carefully at the sell by dates on stuff though. The pizzas look lovely, but I’m not a fan, so can’t comment.

DontCallMeShitley · 13/10/2019 19:08

You get what you pay for in both.
I loathe Lidl, food is on a par with Asda, lots of palm oil, butter is watery, pastrami is foul, fish goes off way before the use by date (I mean those slices of cooked salmon which are well over-salted), fruit & veg doesn't keep.

Have tried Aldi, and wanted to like it but after a horrendous last visit where there seemed to have been a raid on the shelves, bread in 1" slices, and rotting veg, I left with only 3 items. This was a big store and looked new, but was just a dump.

If you are used to Sainsburys standard you will be scraping the barrel with either of them. You may as well go to Asda if you want palm oil, barely an item in there without it.

MouseTheDog · 13/10/2019 19:09

Shelby30 Aldi do nappy pants from size 4.

Flavabobble · 13/10/2019 19:10

Disclaimer: I’m Speaking from the perspective of the two that are local to me.

Aldi probably has a better selection of food, but the staff are surly and uninterested. The shop itself, although only a few years old is drab and old fashioned, which gives the impression of being grubby.
Lidl has the best croissants ever, and the staff are lovely. Shop’s bright, spacious, clean, airy and modern.

I know neither of these affects the bank balance but I’ve given Aldi enough chances and the mood it leaves me in isn’t worth the savings made.

MouseTheDog · 13/10/2019 19:11

I agree generally it depends on your local store so check them out. Our local Sainsbury’s is famous for empty shelves; I have never managed a whole shop from there. Both my local Aldis are great 👍
