Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl?

I've shopped in Sainsbury's since I left home but we need to save some money and a brand new aldi has just opened round the corner from us, we also have a Lidl about 5 mins drive away.
I've popped into both for a few bits before but neither have twin trollies so it's been a bit of a pain with a newborn and 3 year old twins running round Envy but our eldest 2 Dc have more hours at pre school now so I'm going to take the plunge and try and switch supermarket.

Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl food?

And is there anything particular I should look out for that's really good!?
My husband reckons Aldi do really nice knock off Kinder Bueno's that's he's had at work before!

Aldi, definitely

For me it's a toss up, both very similar really. I'm a total supermarket whore and go everywhere, I seem to have to go to the shop every day? Head wrecking.

Aldi for smoked pancetta, cheese, I like their wines, wet wipes, cereal. Overall more interesting items, which means I spend more (eg fresh salads, the edamame one)

But Lidl for jasmine rice, Greek yoghurt (heavenly), smoked sliced ham, fresh veg, meat, deluxe green coffee (for my coffee machine the best, I've tried them all!). They also do some brands like Hellman's, Heinz ketchup, golden syrup, tuc which means I need to go to Tesco less. I find there's no difference in either nappies but the Lidl fit my DD better as she's v petite. Def spend less in Lidl so that's a major bonus!

We have had two bad experiences with aldi aged steak where it tastes really strongly of liver (high iron content?) wasn't nice at all and I'd avoid in future.

Our local Aldi is miserable. Old and dark store with terrible parking.
Whereas all the Lidl’s are new, so that sways my decision.
I never find much to find in our Aldi but it’s probably not a good example of one

I would have to say Aldi. we were Aldi shoppers but recently started back at tescos after many years we are saving £20 a week by buying all Tesco's brand and they are better quality. Try it.

The fruit and veg in my local Lidl is better than the mouldy offering in Aldi.
However one of my kids won't set food in Lidl because of the stench of the bakery, it makes him heave. It doesn't smell good.
Otherwise for me they are much of a muchness. I don't buy raw meat from either, don't buy convenience food or ready meals.
The cheese and chocolate are virtually identical. They both have the salt and pepper crackers which the kids love.
Lidl's yoghurt selection is probably favoured by my family but Aldi have slightly better crisps and they have chocolate brownie bombs.

Lidl. everytime

amusedbush · 14/10/2019 09:29

Lidl gives me the boke but I don't know exactly why. It always just has a weird atmosphere, the floor never seems quite clean and the overwhelming smell of melted butter from the bakery turns my stomach.

I'd choose Aldi every time.

Whattodoabout · 14/10/2019 10:43

Aldi, we shop there every week and it’s fantastic. They do knock off versions of pretty much everything and their version is usually as good if not better. Their specialbuys can be fab too.

Lidl has an amazing bakery but I’m not sold by anything else.

I used to prefer Aldi, until a Lidl opened in walking distance and next door to my DC's school, and now I really love Lidl. The bakery is amazing. It's so easy to have friends round for brunch/lunch as I grab bakery things from Lidl, I've given our the mini pastries to parents at kids parties, my kids love the giant pretzels, I love the Portuguese custard tarts. I'll only eat Lidl croissants now, the ones in plastic packets don't compare from anywhere else.

In the packaged bread aisle the crumpets are the only non Warburton's ones I like. They do hot cross buns all year round which my toddler loves just plain out the pack straight from nursery.

In the tinned aisle, they do chunky soups which are as food as casserole. My teen has them in her thermos for school lunches in winter, they do a really lovely lamb and mint one, and a chicken and vegetable. I love that the very cheap Tuna fish comes with ring pull lids. As do all the tins I think.

Multipacks of raisins are very cheap, I think cheaper than Aldi.

Nappies are much much softer, less grainy and less garish than Aldi. Wipes are great. Organix cereal bar boxes are a good price.

The Lidl waterproofs they do a couple of times a year are amazing. Adults and kids. Very cheap. Lidl Christmas toys are great, but I think Aldi offer very good wooden toys too but I think Lidl are superior with the Playtive range.

I love the large buckets of Greek Yogurt at Lidl, and the sweet potato fries. They have just bought our fake orange Aero, and their dairy free mint creme chocolate is divine. My toddler loves the cheap tortilla chips.

In all honesty it's almost identical to Aldi, except Lidl has the bakery. I'd stick with whichever one is closest.

Just remembered too BIG pros my Lidl had over Also. Toilets (including family toilet) and mini trolleys for kids. The mini trolleys truly makes shopping bearable over the school holidays for me. Store specific but ours always has more staff on checkouts and less pressure to pack quickly.

aggitatedstate · 14/10/2019 11:04

@poorbuthappy it did me too! Was sick as hell

katycb · 14/10/2019 11:08

Ask them in store about the trollies. I have twins and Aldi didn't have double trollies when they opened, someone complained and now they have more than anywhere else! It's our Asda that doesn't have them apparently because of the travelatour which is bizarre as Tesco has both Hmm

springydaff · 14/10/2019 11:09

I've shopped at Lidl for ever (it seems). I like straightforward and simple, don't like gimmicky packaging or endless choice. Lidl are consistently cheaper than Aldi imo.

Lidl so gf sausages which are great.

Babyg1995 · 14/10/2019 11:09

I've tried both if u had to choose would be Aldi I get my shopping from Asda can be just as cheap

LaurieMarlow · 14/10/2019 11:27

I find it quite store dependent. Try them both out and see. Also you could alternate between the two.
