Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl?

I've shopped in Sainsbury's since I left home but we need to save some money and a brand new aldi has just opened round the corner from us, we also have a Lidl about 5 mins drive away.
I've popped into both for a few bits before but neither have twin trollies so it's been a bit of a pain with a newborn and 3 year old twins running round Envy but our eldest 2 Dc have more hours at pre school now so I'm going to take the plunge and try and switch supermarket.

Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl food?

And is there anything particular I should look out for that's really good!?
My husband reckons Aldi do really nice knock off Kinder Bueno's that's he's had at work before!

Aldi seems to use a lot of packaging compared to Lidl, so their biscuits are in trays plus plastic and there is majority packaged fruit and veg.

Their meat is lower quality cuts, so lots of minced rather than full joints.
Aldi Greek yogurt is way below the Lidl one and the frozen food is not as good. The wine selection is more interesting in Lidl.

But I like Aldi washing liquids (nicer smelling and cheaper), toilet and kitchen paper. Their food basics are acceptable and I’ve bought some nice clothes in their special offers.

Aldi without a doubt

ChillyB · 13/10/2019 20:14

Lidl. I find Aldi more expensive and the veg doesn’t last at all. Lidl veg fairs better for me.

I try and buy things that haven’t been processed as I’m often batch cooking things suitable for DS to eat and as such don’t really find I have any bother.

I do occasionally do a top up of items at sainsburys which would be my preferred place to shop if it wasn’t so expensive!

Aldi. Lidl always seems a bit more chaotic, and I don't like the dayglo price tickets.

Mookins14 · 13/10/2019 20:20

I do 90% of my weekly shopping for at least 8 years in Aldi and I never have the rotten fruit and veg I read about on here. I find their produce excellent and reliable and as much as possible sourced in Ireland (where I am). So I am really happy to be able to support a shop that supports Irish for such good and reliable value (I promise I am not sponsored by them but prior to them opening in my town we were limited to a very expensive, limited choice supermarket)

AgeLikeWine · 13/10/2019 20:23

Lidl for me.

Unlike Aldi, they haven’t quite abandoned the quirky German-ness which sets them apart from the pack. Also, they sell the best natural yogurt, potato salad & Black Forest ham of any supermarket. Their wines are great value, too.

I do wish their beer selection was better, though. They are a German company, so why not offer a superb selection of interesting regional German brews?

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 13/10/2019 20:33

Lidl is closer to me but regularly frustrates me with lack of certain veg and fruit.
New Aldi is way better but I prefer Lidl for dairy stuff - that said, I can buy practically everything from Aldi - if nearer that's where I'd go. So in balance- Aldi

KronksSpinachPuffs · 13/10/2019 20:37

Aldi!

I swapped to lidl one week and when I got home most of the fruit was mouldy/rotten I wasnt impressed at all!

zsazsajuju · 13/10/2019 20:40

Aldi. Quality is great and it’s well cheaper even than Asda.

Timeless19 · 13/10/2019 20:46

Aldi for sure.

Also Ocado is far cheaper than Sainsbury’s, I have popped into Sainsbury’s recently and couldn’t believe how expensive it was compared to Ocado on a couple of brands pukka tea and kiddylicious.

Ocado for brands and Aldi for basics and continental foods.

Millie2013 · 13/10/2019 20:46

Lidl, because I prefer our local store. Shopping in our local Aldi (same day, same time) always feels stressful and busy (probably because, judging by the responses, it’s more popular 😂)
That said, I do pop in to Aldi for the tempura chicken breasts (GF) and almond and pineapple soft cheese.

redexpat · 13/10/2019 20:46

Lidl. Because I live abroad and they have British week sometimes! Also good freezer section.

SwedishEdith · 13/10/2019 20:48

My local Lidl has a better car park than Aldi so it's easier to use. But it's not quite as nice.

Hecateh · 13/10/2019 20:53

I prefer Aldi but will use either.

itsbetterthanabox · 13/10/2019 20:54

Aldi defo

Cracklycaramel · 13/10/2019 20:56

I like the different special weeks at lidl but the aisle of shite is better at aldi possibly not a good idea if you want to save money. I end up alternating- sainsbury's once a month, aldi once and lidl once.

Redcrayons · 13/10/2019 20:56

Aldi.
But Lidl bakery is fab.

letsdolunch321 · 13/10/2019 21:07

Only have a Aldi that I use weekly. I put the shopping purchased at Aldi into the Tesco groceries checker and found Aldi to be 13-15 pounds cheaper a week.

I very occasionally pick up buts and pieces that I prefer from Sainsburys

hoverboardforchristmas · 13/10/2019 21:09

Aldi

Battenburg1978 · 13/10/2019 21:09

For me it's Lidl, partially because my local Lidl has a self check out which speeds up the shopping process. I don't by much processed stuff but I find the basics of decent quality. I find the lol chicken better than Aldi's. I do think Aldi often has a larger selection of products though. We prefer the Lidl chocolate to Aldi!

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 13/10/2019 21:17

Neither.

The stores near my home always have bare shelves and I gave up pretty quickly.

fruitinaheapisnotabirthdaycake · 13/10/2019 21:18

Asda always has what I need

formerbabe · 13/10/2019 21:21

I really love them both.

I'd say Aldi has a better freezer section

TrixieFranklin · 13/10/2019 21:28

I'll be going tomorrow so will definitely have a look at some of the bits you've recommended - thank you.
We don't have an asda near us, sainsburys aldi and Lidl are all within 5 mins of me, we have a Waitrose about 10 min drive away (I used to work there when I was at 6th form and loved their stuff) but it's soooo expensive and you have to pay to park there - I definitely miss my staff discount!

Fingers crossed I'll find some meal inspiration and save some pennies!

Aldi. I like the natural peanut butter, nappies, steak, free range chicken, cheddar, hot cloth cleanser (in the middle baskets when in, salt and pepper crackers, blue label Malbec.
