Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl?

I've shopped in Sainsbury's since I left home but we need to save some money and a brand new aldi has just opened round the corner from us, we also have a Lidl about 5 mins drive away.
I've popped into both for a few bits before but neither have twin trollies so it's been a bit of a pain with a newborn and 3 year old twins running round Envy but our eldest 2 Dc have more hours at pre school now so I'm going to take the plunge and try and switch supermarket.

Do you prefer Aldi or Lidl food?

And is there anything particular I should look out for that's really good!?
My husband reckons Aldi do really nice knock off Kinder Bueno's that's he's had at work before!

Aldi.
Compared to our moderate sized sainsburys I actually prefer the things they sell.ive found the Buenos too but now hide them from myself!

TrixieFranklin · 13/10/2019 19:15

Aldi seems to be the winner so will definitely give them a go!! Maybe it's worth popping into Lidl for bread/bakery bits too.

@Snowflake9 your treat knowledge is impressive Grin I'll give them all a go I'm sure..

We go to both as we prefer particular products in each store. We do our main shop in Lidl, but that's because we didn't have an Aldi close by for a couple of years so are now used to going to Lidl.

Lidl faves - bakery, cold meats, aisle of crap.

Aldi faves - cereal, super 6 fruit and veg.

I much prefer Aldi.
Although, 2 things I don't like - their cream crackers and bread

Heismyopendoor · 13/10/2019 19:22

Personally I would give both a try. One the first week and the other the next.

I prefer Lidl. My Aldi’s are insanely busy, car parks are laid out poorly and never any spaces. Can’t get in to anything at the aisles. It’s almost post apocalyptic!

I love the Lidl bakery, their fruit and veg and good. Good prices on meat and dairy. Love their weekend deals.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 13/10/2019 19:28

Aldi
We live a good 25 min drive from Aldi but only have Tesco and M&S locally so even though it's extra petrol I think we're still saving. The grown up yogurts are lovely, as is anything salmon related, always great veg offers, earl grey, cheeses, crackers, beef roasting joints and posh jams are cheap and really good.
I'd love an Aldi by us!

Chilledout11 · 13/10/2019 19:32

Aldi is great. I would buy everything you would - weekly shopping and see how you get on . Just do a normal shop.

Oblomov19 · 13/10/2019 19:33

Aldi. By far.

I still shop at Sainsbury's. And Aldi. Occasionally Lidl.

EssentialHummus · 13/10/2019 19:34

I genuinely can’t tell the difference and often forget which one I was in that morning/week. But I really rate Aldi nappies.

EdithWeston · 13/10/2019 19:36

I don't have either in a convenient journey.

But when I do go I prefer Aldi - not for the food but for the shampoo and skincare. Fabulous range

Yoollyball · 13/10/2019 19:36

I lost the aldi love - it got so boring always being the same. I shop across all the stores - I'm luck as i have every main supermarket including Waitrose within a 15 minute drive i shop.in all of them and pick lidl over aldi now - mainly because of the rotating themes.

I love the variety they give. I've got fondue in the fridge from a few weeks ago Alpine week. Love it - it breaks up the monotony!

Bluearsedfly36 · 13/10/2019 19:45

Aldi without a doubt. I went to Lidl not so long ago and got the same as I would in Aldi and it was way more expensive.

MikeUniformMike · 13/10/2019 19:47

Aldi. Both are good.

Longdistance · 13/10/2019 19:49

Lidl. Super weekend!
The Aldi’s local to us are badly stocked. I always find the wine in Lidl better and more variety.

AdalindMeisner · 13/10/2019 19:49

Aldi, I don't find lidl really saves me anything. I was also put off lidl bakery as the stuff is uncovered and there was a fly landing on stuff 🤮

bobstersmum · 13/10/2019 19:49

Aldi by a mile. And the lidl bakery here is to be avoided as I've seen folk picking bits up and putting them back, makes me cringe!

Cuppaand2biscuits · 13/10/2019 19:49

Lidl, I think the quality is better. I have recently been shopping st Aldi because of the stickers for school promotions but I've had to return to lidl because it's just better.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 13/10/2019 19:53

Both, I alternate every week.

Peachypips78 · 13/10/2019 19:58

Aldi is better in every way except the bakery. The giant salty pretzels are AMAZING.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/10/2019 19:58

Aldi!
I popped back to Sainsbury’s last month as a one off- nearly choked at the price ...I resent it now and am strictly Aldi! Even if I could afford it why would I pay so much more. I hope Sainsbury’s lose lots of customers, prices there are now extortionate

Fabuleuse · 13/10/2019 19:59

I have both just two minutes drive from my house. In fact I can see the back of Aldi from our window, so I have done extensive research in both. I would say I prefer Aldi slightly. Their fresh skinless salmon fillets are excellent, as is their Greek yogurt rip-off of Fage Total. My fussy 5 year old also loves their veggie burgers, which are basically just sweet potato, chickpeas and herbs with no weird additives, so that's a great way of getting more veg into him. Also as a pp says I think their coffee is better. However, Lidl is on a par imo for most other things. Fruit and veg are nearly always fine from both, and even their chicken is as good as most other supermarkets (whereas Asda chicken is disgusting). Gosh, when did I become so boring that I would type all that out...

NotMeNoNo · 13/10/2019 20:01

Aldi but really just because I'm used to it. Now moved to somewhere that Lidl have the territory (one has planning literally just up the road) reluctantly transferring my affections.

cornstarch · 13/10/2019 20:01

Lidl. I like the cold pizza things they sell in the bakery section.

AlwaysOverworkedUnderpaid · 13/10/2019 20:02

Lidl refuse to tell customers how long their fruit and veg have been sitting on the shelves and so for that reason alone, Aldi.

TrixieFranklin · 13/10/2019 20:02

Good shout re alternating, we're in a rut at Sainsbury's ending up with the same meals every week, so maybe changing it up will inspire the trolley a little.
