I’m 40 and I was brought up listening to my Mam’s music. This mostly consisted of Wham, George Michael, Brian Ferry, The Police, Dire Straits, Queen etc.

Then when she met my stepdad I was introduced to The Cars, Simple Minds, Prog Rock, Rolling Stones etc.

I didn’t really have loads of money to buy my own music so I just borrowed their CDs. My eldest is 11 and would never listen to any old music and I think he’s missing out!

We had Kerrang! Music tv on the surround sound all day (on sky so we could turn tv off or still use it for PlayStation) and nowadays Kerrang! Radio is on the Bose all day 🤘🏼

Turquoisetamborine · 12/10/2019 20:04

Wet wet wet and Erasure too!

Queen, various Motown, The Who, Simon and Garfunkel, Madness, Dire Straits, Bob Marley, to be fair as a teenager a few of my cassettes (oasis and guns and roses spring to mind) ended up in my mum’s car as she ‘borrowed’ them...

I listen to absolute radio all day so still listen to all the same stuff Grin

My dad loved music and I'm pleased that at 75 he's mad on Spotify and listens to The Killers, Interpol and co.

He's always had a keen interest. In the 90s he'd listen to Radiohead or The Verve for example, The Smiths , Echo, The Cure in the 80s.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s he'd play Leonard Cohen, Harvey Andrews, Carol King, Dylan, Floyd, The Beatles. By 7 I knew Cohen's back catalogue!

I remember when we got a CD player and The Joshua Tree was on permanently.

My mother was into trends at the time and loved pop music, so Hot Chocolate, Rod Stewart, disco were all big. But not really a massive listener like dad.

It's always Indie rock and roll for me, though my own children don't listen to music Sad
I've often got music on and will try to convert them, but no joy so far.

mainecoonmum · 12/10/2019 20:07

Dire straights, bob Marley, ub40, u2, Enya, the orb, Simon and garfunkal, Genesis, still love it all now x

HandsOffMyRights · 12/10/2019 20:08

Oh God Turquoise, I feel ancient now if that's your parents' era 🤣

Kim82 · 12/10/2019 20:09

It was Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straights, ABBA and The Moody Blues at our house mainly. I love them all and when I hear them I’m instantly transported back to my childhood.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/10/2019 20:14

Beatles, Frankie Valli, 60s pop - Dad
Queen, ABBA, reggae, Rod Stewart - Mum

Both of them also like Elkie Brooks and Chris De Burgh. I like most of their record collection but despise CdB.

coffeetofunction · 12/10/2019 20:19

The eagles, the Beatles, Don Williams, abba, oasis

I'm music mad!! All my children have a really eclectic taste in music. The older to have been to a number of gigs and festivals.

Music is life in this house and I look forward to my children telling me about their memories of music from being a child when they are older

ScreamingValenta · 12/10/2019 20:19

The Incredible String Band.

Natsku · 12/10/2019 20:21

My parents didn't listen to music but dad would sing snippets of songs all the time, mostly hymns but also The Seekers which I really liked and now I've started playing The Seekers to DS and he loves them.

Lwmommy · 12/10/2019 20:23

My mum it was Dolly Parton, Dr Hook, Motown
My Dad it was 50s rock n roll

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 20:24

Mozart and other classical can’t remember - really brings back memories of bacon and egg breakfast smells

Dolly Parton

Van Morrison - brown eyed girl record

Wavingwhiledrowning · 12/10/2019 20:25

Motown. Fleetwood Mac. The Moody Blues. Dusty Springfield. The Carpenters. Great stuff.
My dad was well into military music (dambusters etc) which was a bit random, but every now and then my parents would have a couple of glasses of vino and put their military records on and we'd have a brilliant evening marching around the living room. I really cannot imagine any child doing that these days!!

minou123 · 12/10/2019 20:28

We used to drive everywhere! All across Europe, Middle East and Asia, the only saving grace (as a child) was the music.
It was standard "getting ready for the road trip" preperations to make sure we had the music.

My dad it was: rolling stones, Elton john, Madness
My mum: The Carpenters, ABBA

My favourite memory was when my sister was allowed to play her CD. She decided to put on Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up.
It was a while before my parents allowed us to choose the music again Grin

Honeyroar · 12/10/2019 20:30

I'm feeling old at some of these too!

My mum listened to Abba, Boney M etc. My dad was a huge Dire Straits fan, plus Level 42, (both of whom I loved) and Status Quo (who I hated). He also played himself - brass, which I adore, and jazz, which I hate!

BeeMyBaby · 12/10/2019 20:31

Eagles, bread, fleetwood Mac mostly. My dad likes to strum on his electric guitar so he would always play the eagles looooads.

lljkk · 12/10/2019 20:31

My parents weren't that into music. Mom & a brother played piano so you could say they made their own.
Bob Seeger, Linda Ronstandt?

My dad quite likes Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond & Barbara Streisand nowadays.

No13 · 12/10/2019 20:32

I’m 42 and loved listening to Neil Diamond. I never admitted to it though

weebarra · 12/10/2019 20:34

I was born in 77.
I remember my parents playing the Beatles, Bob Dylan but also Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen, Springsteen, Paul Simon.
My first gig was going with my dad to see Tom Petty.

BringBackDoves · 12/10/2019 20:34

My dad listens to music all the time and did so when growing up. So I heard a ton of music all my life but especially ...

Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, The Beatles, Neil Young, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Cream, Dire Straits, Billy Joel, Crosby Stills and Nash ... loads more probably

But then I got him into Nirvana ... I thought my dad’s music was shit in my late teens and early twenties then realised that was just rebellion and it was all so so good.

Music is an enormous part of my life and I hope my kids grow up feeling the same. I simply can’t imagine life without it.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 12/10/2019 20:35

Lots of country- glen Campbell, Randy travis, Waylon Jennings, Willie nelson, Tammy Wynette, patsy Kline, Lynn Anderson, Garth Brooks, Christy Moore (still love him now- see username Grin) Billy Connolly. I was born in 86.

Nearlyadoctor · 12/10/2019 20:36

Born in 1971 - Elvis, Neil Diamond, ABBA , Rolling Stones

TimeforanotherChange · 12/10/2019 20:36

Dad loved Neil Diamond, Simon and Garfunkel, Dr Hook, John Denver - I still like a lot of these. Mum liked musicals and Glenn Miller - I had NO interest in listening to the album of 'Oklahoma' or 'Porgy and Bess' Grin

Grambler · 12/10/2019 20:38

Beatles, Elvis, Mamas and Papas, Dr Hook, Rolling Stones.
Then they moved onto Genesis, Dire Straits, Queen.
