I’m 40 and I was brought up listening to my Mam’s music. This mostly consisted of Wham, George Michael, Brian Ferry, The Police, Dire Straits, Queen etc.

Then when she met my stepdad I was introduced to The Cars, Simple Minds, Prog Rock, Rolling Stones etc.

I didn’t really have loads of money to buy my own music so I just borrowed their CDs. My eldest is 11 and would never listen to any old music and I think he’s missing out!

Queen, The Eurythmics, Boney M, The Pretenders, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson. Also for some reason when I was very young they used to play 'I wanna know what love is' by Foreigner every night, none of their other songs.

MarshaBradyo · 12/10/2019 20:49

Oh and lots of Billy Joel and Tom Jones. They saw Billy I think recently at Madison Square Garden NYC

Cocolapew · 12/10/2019 20:50

My mum being the Yorkshire lass that she was lol loved UB40, Boy George etc. My dad was a South London guy and listened to dub, reggae, and lovers rock stuff by King Tubby, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear.

lots33 · 12/10/2019 20:58

Born in the 70s. Parents listened to the Beatles, David Bowie, Motown, Paul Simon, country, rod stewart, ABBA, disco and from my mum, 80s pop - Duran Duran and Wham.
My dad loved classical.
In the 90’s I was really uncool and loved 50s and 60s music, ABBA, cheesy pop, musical soundtracks. Not much has changed? 😂😂

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/10/2019 21:02

I find it fascinating how tastes change with just a few years. My dad was a 60s fan and still prefers 60s music. My mum is 4 years younger than him and liked glam rock and 70s music, but now likes George Ezra, Ed Sheeran, Caro Emerald and (weirdly) My Chemical Romance.

DH was 7 years younger than my dad and just 3 years younger than mum. He was very much into 2 tone, punk, 80s hair bands and Queen. He also liked Oasis, a lot of 90s indie and Meatloaf/Jim Steinman. The musical gulf between DH and my dad was immense and a whole different generation, despite them only being a few years apart.

M People always make me think of my Mum. Angel Street takes me right back to my childhood!

icebearforpresident · 12/10/2019 21:05

I don’t remember my parents listening to a lot of music in the house and when we were in the car it was a really bad local AM radio station - more static than anything else.

The one thing I do remember was my dad got given a bette Midler cassette one birthday and it was all that was on as we drove down to Cornwall on holiday - From Scotland. My brother threw it out the window somewhere around Bristol.

We have music on all the time in the house, kids are currently loving Foo Fighters, George Ezra and Taylor Swift. I could live without the Taylor swift by overall I feel like we’re raising them well.

Born early 70's. Lots of classical, operetta ( shudder ) and occasional WW2 big band stuff.
Parents were in their 40's when they had me. Think the Beatles and Elvis would have been considered too modern. Any music I listened to was regarded as noise pollution.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/10/2019 21:11

Oh Lord, I'm a bit older than you lot!

My parents were 'older parents' so growing up we heard a lot of 'Big Bands' (Glenn Miller et al) and my mother loved the old Gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson and George Beverly Shea.

HeyMicky · 12/10/2019 21:14

My parents were true boomers - '45 and '46. So I grew up on a mix of 60s jazz, 60s and 70s folk, Beatles and Stones, some 50s rock and roll.

I knew all the words to The Big Chill soundtrack before I knew any 80s contemporary pop.

MellowBird85 · 12/10/2019 21:16

MadisonAvenue · 12/10/2019 21:57

Mine didn’t listen to music very often when I was growing up. Sunday morning was when music was played. They were both born in the 1930s and I have vague memories of them listening to Vera Lynn, Jim Reeves, Bill Haley and Johnnie Ray (both of whom they saw in concert in the 1950s and still have the programmes). My dad also listened to male voice choirs and brass bands.

Stravapalava · 12/10/2019 22:01

I love Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Stones and The Byrds, plus various 70s disco tracks thanks to my parents (I'm an 80s baby.)

My DD aged 9 loves ABBA and Queen as well as McFly, Steps and Hanson.

userabcname · 12/10/2019 22:06

My mum used to watch TOTP with me and we'd listen to the top 40 on the radio every Sunday, often recording our favourite hits on cassette tape for the car. She also listened to stuff like Abba, Barry Manilow, George Michael, a mix of music her parents listened to and soundtracks to musicals. She still likes modern chart music now and often has the music channels on when I go round.
