What music of your parents did you listen to as a kid?

I’m 40 and I was brought up listening to my Mam’s music. This mostly consisted of Wham, George Michael, Brian Ferry, The Police, Dire Straits, Queen etc.

Then when she met my stepdad I was introduced to The Cars, Simple Minds, Prog Rock, Rolling Stones etc.

I didn’t really have loads of money to buy my own music so I just borrowed their CDs. My eldest is 11 and would never listen to any old music and I think he’s missing out!

My DF's just passed away @ 89..but LOVED his music & played it/whistled along to it everywhere... Guy Mitchell/Johnnie Ray/Slim Whitman/Foster & Allen/Emile Ford (Slow Boat to China⛩)Paul Anka/Doris DayGrinlooooads more - in the days when they were 'proper songs and you could hear the words'🤩

KayakingOnDown · 12/10/2019 22:11

Born in early 80s.

We listened to Leonard Cohen, Jennifer Warnes, Dire Straits, Police, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson (dad), Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Enya, the Fureys, the Chieftains.

My favourites were Paul Simon, Cohen and Van Morrison, all of whom I listen to regularly still.

As I got a bit older I remember more classical music, especially Mozart's violin, clarinet and oboe concertos, Vivaldi four seasons (Nigel Kennedy version when it came out), Beethoven's symphonies, and Handel's Messiah.

My mum likes country music and rock. Dad introduced me to the Beatles (their records, not in person Grin)

I also pinched my mum’s Bangles CDs, then I found out later in life they were my dad’s - he was just too embarrassed to tell me Grin

For some reason I don't remember listening to any Beatles or Abba. Yet the funny thing is I know every word to every song. So we must have.

definitelyshouldknowbetter · 12/10/2019 22:22

You knew it was Sunday in our house when I was growing up when Daniel O’Donnell was on and mum was ironing!Grin

Other than that it was Buddy Holly and some Motown, mostly 60s stuff.

I listen to a massive range of music and try to keep up with modern stuff too, it’s important to me to introduce music to my DC and I hope they grow up to love it as much as I do. I would have loved to have studied music but it wasn’t seen as a legitimate course by my mumSad

MrsWicket · 12/10/2019 22:29

My mum grew up in Liverpool, so there was a lot of the Beatles played. When my parents threw a sophisticated party in the 70s, Manuel and His Music of the Mountains, set the tone. Grin

Turquoisetamborine · 12/10/2019 23:17

Loved reading these! Listening to a bit of Sade now, another favourite of my mam.

Always music on in our house growing up. Fleetwood Mac, The Eurythmics, David Bowie, Erasure, Queen, U2. Know the words to every Eurythmics song so that must have been played a lot.

Love this thread, has reminded me of my childhood.

Dad: The Barron Knights, Meatloaf, Neil Diamond, Mike and the Mechanics, Diana Ross, ELO, Queen, The Kinks, Soggy Wet Damp (better known as Wet, Wet, Wet), Cat Stevens, Kenny Rogers, Madness, Dr Hook, Val Doonican, and many many more that I can't remember the names of. Dad was pretty eclectic in his music tastes. He introduced me to the music of Jean Michel Jarre (which resulted in me becoming a fan).
Mum: The Beatles, The Carpenters, Mamas and Papas, Barry Manilow, Pavarotti. Mum was more a Beatles fan at the end of the day.
There was some cross over between my parents (mostly ELO, Queen and Diana Ross), but Mum had the last say, so there was a lot of Beatles played in the house.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/10/2019 23:47

I am so old😭
I grew up with Barry manilo, Neil sedaka, Tom Jones, rod Stewart, Johnny Mathis, Neil diamond, Val doonican, John Denver. Glen Campbell and things like that. My Papa listened to Slim Whitman, Johnny Cash and the like.

When I was a teen, mum added Simon and Garfunkel, Elaine Paige and Barbara Dixon into the mix
Everything I liked (Bowie, Dylan, hair metal) was incomprehensible rubbishGrin

Knittedfairies · 12/10/2019 23:49

Dramaofallama · 12/10/2019 23:54

My mum always played David Bowie, human league, fine young cannibals, frankie goes to Hollywood. She was a new romantic in the 80's.

My dad would play Queen, meatloaf and Bob Marley.

My nan, who I spent a lot of time with as a child would play Roy Orbison.

I like all the artists listed above so it wore off on me Grin

Northernsoullover · 12/10/2019 23:58

Folk and country music. I love listening to it. The same presenter still does a folk show iirc. Mike Harding. When I hear folk music it brings back memories of a happy childhood.

CantspellWontspell · 13/10/2019 00:07

Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Queen and an assortment of sixties stuff but they weren't into music that much.

Thehagonthehill · 13/10/2019 00:20

Born 1960 so lots of things listed were'my music'.
My dad plated most music so I was rocked to sleep with jazz, through to the Beatles,rock/folk.Carpenters and Beach boys were for singing along too going on holiday as young teens when he got a car(imagine 3 teens and 2 adults in a Morris Minor and holiday luggage-happy memories)
Thanks to John Peel my dad never stuck in an era but Jazz was his best.
Both appreciated Classical but I was an adult before I found out my Mum liked Bob Marley.
My DD loves music but thanks to head phones she only introduces me to her favourites, unless we are in the car when it is Radio.
She watched the film about the pirate radio ship(forget it's name)and really gets how much and how varied the music was iesoecially in the 60/70s.
Influence was from TV too,Val Doonigan,Cliff Richard.Musicals and Elvis,Doris Day.And Eurovision was popular!

namechangedforthis1980 · 13/10/2019 00:22

TravellingSpoon · 13/10/2019 08:15

Mum loves Heart, Tina Turner and Chicago. Also ABBA and Celine Dion

Dad was a massive Gary Glitter fan and listened to little else when I was a child. Luckily his tastes have changed a little and he now listens to better music, he likes ABBA too so it's one of the few things my parents actually have in common.

Bluesheep8 · 13/10/2019 08:22

E.L.O were the soundtrack to my childhood. I still love them now. Also Johnny Cash and loads of Irish music. All are a huge influence on my musical taste.

Lessstressedhemum · 13/10/2019 08:31

How could I have forgotten Cliff RichardShock
My mum didn't like Eve's, she liked Cliff, weirdo. And Paul Anka, Petula Clark and the Carpenters. The Temptations, Diana Ross. My folks were teens in the late 50s, early 60s.

Lessstressedhemum · 13/10/2019 08:31

Eve's = Elvis

Redspider1 · 13/10/2019 08:33

The Beatles and Rolling Stones. I’m 48.

Redspider1 · 13/10/2019 08:34

Yes Johnny Cash too and Irish music. The Everly brothers, Eddie Cochran, Wings later.

yawnhedehihi · 13/10/2019 08:35

My dad was 70s rock which is my favourite music now my mum was more leading ladies Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Gloria Estefan etc.

My kids listen to my music in the car so hopefully they won't have to listen to the crap of today's music.
