I hope all the posters talking about commercialised plastic tatt apply the same sentiment to Christmas!

Ginfordinner · 11/10/2019 19:37

Tremendously enjoying the Halloween snobbery on this thread

There is a lot isn’t there. The plastic tat we have is about 12 years old and has been brought out every year, and will get re-used again this year, just not in our house this time. Like Willow2017 our plastic tat is years old and gets re-used every year.

That said, we never decorated before the 31st. It isn't like Christmas.

snottysystem · 11/10/2019 19:47

Yep all the plastic waste will definitely reduce & we can save the planet if people stop putting up Halloween decorations!

Our Halloween stuff is mainly paper/card and some of it is over 10 years old.
Our main Christmas decorations are paper kindly bought for me by a Dutch colleague 20 years ago.
Admittedly our Christmas tree is plastic, but that is over 20 years old too and still in pretty fine condition.

How many of the moaners have new phones, or a cupboard full of new clothes etc, or redecorate every 10 years or whatever?

OtraCosaMariposa · 11/10/2019 19:53

you'd know that Hallowe'en has ALWAYS been a thing in parts of the UK such as Scotland

Indeed. But it never involved copious amounts of shop bought plastic decorations.

Willow2017 · 11/10/2019 19:55

I really wish people would just think for themselves.

That would also.apply to the people who pontificate about Halloween never existing in UK until it was miraculously imported from USA last year or in the last couple of years. Maybe finding out for themselves would be better than regurgitating the same old crap they heard somewhere else?

Halloween bashing gets really tedious when trotted out every single year. After years being told the same thing especially on sites like this, you would think people were aware of it's origins in uk by now!
But hey don't let that get in the way of a good 'holier than thou thread.

Trewser · 11/10/2019 19:58

Of course Halloween existed here. Old pagan festival etc. But all the plastic shite is new and literally marketed at gullible people who love tat. Of which there are, clearly, many.

soggypizza · 11/10/2019 20:01

Same with Christmas - quite a bit more plastic shite.

MurderOfGoths · 11/10/2019 20:02

Most of my Halloween decorations aren't plastic, so does that mean I'm "allowed" to enjoy decorating my house with them now?

I'm sure there are things you Halloween killjoys like that I'd find dull and tedious, but if you get joy from them that's great. I personally love all the Halloween stuff in the shops, I would also like less of it to be plastic, because that way it would last longer and be a more suitable all year round decoration and my house would look amazing

dinello · 11/10/2019 20:06

When I was little we would carve 2 pumpkins, and my mum would use the insides to make a pumpkin risotto. Biodegradable and tasty.
Now it's just plastic tat you can't recycle. It's just a load of crap to make parents feel guilty and make money for big companies.
Just say no!

Willow2017 · 11/10/2019 20:12

Funnily enough i and many others dont give a hoot about some random who thinks we are gullible or not.
What I do at my house is my business. The local kids love it, I love it and will continue to use my decs as long as I like.

I recycle and reuse, sell stuff donate things to charity and use as little plastic as poss in daily life.

I am not going to save the world by throwing out my 10 - 15yr old Halloween decs tomorrow so they end up in.....errr landfill!
Or is that an inconvenient fact in all the ego boosting "I am better than you" posts?

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 11/10/2019 20:15

"Trendy
You are wasting your time.
Its the same shite every year.😀
Nobody actually acknowledges they got it wrong (again)"

True. I look forward to the usual Santa bashing come December as well.

habibihabibi · 11/10/2019 20:18

I bloody love Halloween .
Growing up it was never celebrated and was first introduced to it by American neighbours in London .
IMO it trumps Christmas. Just decs, dress ups and sweets. No bothersome present shopping or food expectations.
I want to put my ( homemade and not plastic) decs up now but will wait till the weekend before.
One year I painted my house with glow in the dark paint.

dreichsky · 11/10/2019 20:20

Most of my decorations are not plastic either and like Xmas decorations they are packed away and brought out each year.
I am comfortable the the Halloween traditions in the USA because they are similar to the traditions I grew up with in Scotland.
I do plenty of ungreen things, despite trying but my Halloween decorations aren't even going to be near the top of that list.

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/10/2019 20:33

Most of my decorations are terracotta, ceramic or fabric, just a few plastic (we use battery operated tealights so we can leave them on if we go out), the same ones have been used for years and years. I grow my own pumpkins and compost them afterwards.

I used to be a hater who would sit in the dark with the doorbell switched off which was quite frankly pretty joyless. I embraced it when the DCs were younger and miss taking them trick or treating now they are older, it was very sociable.

Grinchly · 11/10/2019 20:39

I am old, and grew up in the North West of England.

Bonfire night was very much a thing back in the 60s, with penny for the guy and cob coling, Parkin and black peas.

I've since lived in London, The SE, East Anglia, far N W, and only recently ( last 20 years?) has Halloween even remotely become a 'thing', with all the ghastly plastic tat and, quite frankly, bloody irritating intrusion.

The constant knocking on the door upsets my animals and stresses us all out. Leave us be! It's intrusive, pointless and upsetting.

joffreyscoffee · 11/10/2019 20:42

Put mine up last weekend .. at the caravan as Halloween is a big thing on the site - we're not there this weekend and thought next weekend was too late. DD (15 months) is loving all the lights and especially the projector.

soggypizza · 11/10/2019 20:45

The constant knocking on the door upsets my animals and stresses us all out. Leave us be! It's intrusive, pointless and upsetting. That's certainly not the case where we live - no obvious halloween decs, no knocking on the door - you are really quite unfortunate to live somewhere where there is constant knocking on your door, that doesn't sound normal.

Grinchly · 11/10/2019 20:49

Yes, hugely unfortunate, I agree. Tenement living has its upsides and its downsides.

Grinchly · 11/10/2019 20:49

Fortunately Waitrose still deliver here though.

AudacityOfHope · 11/10/2019 20:51

Oh god, never.

Am I fuck having that task added to my list.

Snibril · 11/10/2019 21:07

We decorate our house precisely so that the local families know we are welcoming and don't agitate people who wish to be left alone. I don't purchase 'plastic tat'. Most of my decorations are home-made for instance lanterns from old jam jars. They have been used over and over and I enjoy the creative process.

snottysystem · 11/10/2019 21:09

I always thought the rule was visit the houses that are decorated & avoid the ones that aren't.

I didn't realise people were so snobby about Halloween!

We don't go mad for halloween, but we do put a light up pumpkin on the wall the day before. We put spiderwebs on the front door and pumpkin outside on the day itself so the trick or treaters know to come. We don't decorate inside though, unless we're having a party.
