Vegetarian food frequently out of stock

Has anyone else noticed how frequently vegetarian food is out of stock lately?
Especially things like chilled quorn fake meat type of thing.

Can't say I've noticed as there is plenty of vegetarian food that isn't fake meat.

Tensixtysix · 08/10/2019 20:13

So confused as to why vegetarians want fake meat? You either want mean or you don't.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/10/2019 20:17

Absolutely there is and that's what I mostly eat,but dd is more of a meat avoided the an actual vegetarian and she always wants the fake meat.
I was just wondering whether this is a national problem, possibly due to the rise in 'plant based diets' and veganism. If pub menus are anything to go by vegans eat nothing but fake meat. Hmm

Why do people always say this? It's not that difficult a concept! Many people enjoy the taste and texture of meat but they don't want to eat animals so they enjoy alternatives that try to mimic meat.

I haven't noticed that problem in my area. I'm not vegetarian or vegan but eat a lot of plant based foods. Faux meat is usually available in at least one dish but the majority are still based on vegetables, grains and pulses.

WindsweptEgret · 08/10/2019 20:21

I haven't had any problem finding vegetarian food. I've recently bought a variety of fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, rice, oats, dried fruit and nuts, granola, dark chocolate, and found it easy to find everything I wanted.

PralineCookie · 08/10/2019 20:22

I haven't noticed any real shortages in supermarkets either but I'm sure that demand has increased considerably.

FridayNightLightss · 08/10/2019 20:22

Freezer quorn seems to constantly be low in stock at my local tesco.

Laura221 · 08/10/2019 20:27

My favourite sainsbury sausages are always going in and out of stock and I can never bloody get my hands on the tofurky roast!

There is a massive increase in demand i think.

NannyR · 08/10/2019 20:27

I've not noticed any shortage of foods like Linda McCartney sausages (the only meat sub I really buy).
I don't eat out that regularly but I haven't noticed any of the restaurants I've been to recently, serving fake meat products either.

There are a lot of supply issues globally in many industries at the moment. Something to do with slowbalisation and regulatory changes apparently. Medicine for example is difficult to get at the moment, we spent months hunting down epipens. Maybe there is some kind of supply chain issue for fake meats as well?

Amazonfromkent · 08/10/2019 20:32

Er, buy lots of veg and make veg food!! Simples.

Karwomannghia · 08/10/2019 20:34

Ds loves Tesco meat free hot dogs and they’re never available for online delivery for some reason.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/10/2019 20:35

We like the Quorn sausage rounds in our house and it's hit and miss as to whether they have them in our local Asda.

homemadecommunistrussia · 08/10/2019 20:38

The meat free hotdogs are a favourite here too and they are nearly always out of stock at tesco.

Jeez, OP asks a reasonable question about the availability of a certain type of food and gets a load of self-satisfied snark in response! Hmm

OP, I haven't noticed any issues. I got Linda McCartney sausages subbed for Quorn today (both frozen) but the Quorn cocktail sausages and mini eggs were both available and they can be harder to get hold of, IME. Smile

enjoyingscience · 08/10/2019 20:42

Quorn stocks do seem to be patchy at the minute.

I can’t understand why anyone would be baffled by meat substitutes. Of course vegetarians know that vegetables exist. I’ve been vegetarian for almost 30 years, sometimes I make a sauce with lentils, sometimes with quorn. Can’t understand what difference it makes to anyone else.

lljkk · 08/10/2019 20:55

DH keeps managing to find it! Feeds it to us for tea, most days.

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 08/10/2019 21:00

Yes! Haven't been able to buy Quorn mince or chicken pieces, which I rely on for child friendly Bolognese and curries.

Obviously, I knit my own lentils and boil them with my home grown organic veg for side dishes. After a long day at work, there's nothing I love more than spending 90 minutes toiling in the kitchen to provide ethical meals for my family.

Lidl are the worst, not a Quorn cube in sight for weeks.

PralineCookie · 08/10/2019 21:02

I'm sure that the OP is aware of the existence of vegetables and pulses but sometimes it's nice to have an easy dinner, or a bit of "junk" or to use meat alternatives.

FridayNightLightss · 08/10/2019 21:03

I like the taste of quorn, I don't want to eat meat. Not sure what's confusing about that. Confused

thedevilinablackdress · 08/10/2019 21:04

Rising popularity of vegetarian/vegan diet probably?

MyKingdomForBrie · 08/10/2019 21:06

@thewheelsarefallingoff Grin

How are people being this self righteous over a food substance?! Anyone would think OP was feeding her kids a greggs sausage roll and a fruit shoot Hmm

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/10/2019 21:07

It’s DH. He’s been buying it all. We are new converts.

Onemorecrisp · 08/10/2019 21:09

Yes- it’s never available online delivery at any major shops for me
