Warm and waterproof kids coat?!

User24689 · 06/10/2019 07:26

Hi! Can anyone recommend a decent winter coat for a 4 year old that it both warm and waterproof? Don't really want to spend more than £40. I've seen some nice puffer type ones around but they say 'water repellent' which I'm pretty sure isn't the same thing as waterproof and the waterproof ones feel too thin!

DD has just started school and the school is known for sending the kids out in all weathers so I just really want her to be warm!

M and s storm wear is excellent.

SerafinaPekkalasbroomstick · 06/10/2019 07:29

Water repellent will be no good at all in proper rain. All my recommendations would be out of your budget as we have frugi ones though you may find some in the sale somewhere with a but of googling. The explorer one is the warmest. Or try mountain warehouse? Or go outdoors?

I have been really impressed with the coat I got my DD in the Regatta outlet. Excellent quality and not expensive - www.regatta.com/outlet/kids/

Boden coats are fab - bright, waterproof, warm and hold their value really well so you can sell them on when outgrown. I buy in the sale or on ebay, mostly the ski jackets as they are properly waterproof. If you want new then I agree that M&S stormwear is great too.

If you add "and has ridiculous unicorns on' then this does not exist. I've looked everywhere. If you like unicorns then you'll be cold and/or wet this winter

ArfArfBarf · 06/10/2019 07:33

We’ve bought several of these for dd over the years:

They are very warm and totally waterproof.

I have this for DS. Its lovely and warm inside and feels thick

GeoffreyAndBungle · 06/10/2019 07:34

Mountain warehouse coats are great and they usually have a sale on

Callmecordelia · 06/10/2019 07:37

I used to buy the Boden ski jackets too, I agree they are excellent. I usually got nearly two years wear out of them. DD has decided she's too old for the bright colours of the ones that were in the sale now though. Sad

GetRid · 06/10/2019 07:39

Lands End do brilliant kids coats, fully waterproof. They often have money off if you get on their email list

Loveoddthings · 06/10/2019 07:40

I only get Didrikson
Honestly - so so good

User24689 · 06/10/2019 07:40

Thanks for all these suggestions! great to have some recommendations. We could stretch to spending more if what we want doesn't exist in that budget, there have just been a lot of expenses lately!

@notmytea that made me laugh. I'm sure DD would add unicorns as a requirement if it were up to her but I am utterly sick of them. She does have unicorn wellies hat and scarf so should survive.

Muddy Puddles coats are fab but over budget unless in the sale.

Mountain Warehouse also have some good options.

Dizzylin · 06/10/2019 07:47

We usually take a trip to Mountain Warehouse, they usually have very good sales on too.

MoodLighting · 06/10/2019 07:50

Tresspass and Mountain Warehouse discount stores are excellent. I get my kids coats there for under £25. The jackets with removable fleeces inside are brilliant as they do autumn and winter. I didn't think the regatta ones were as good, but they are cheaper. Be sure to buy waterproof rather than water resistant.

Justgivemesomepeace · 06/10/2019 07:50

I get all my kids winter coats from either Go Outdoors or Decathlon. They are totally waterproof and windproof with good hoods that don't blow off. Usually spend about £30 ish. Brilliant quality. Think my sons current one was from the sailing section in Decathlon.

Iggly · 06/10/2019 07:52

Muddy puddles yes, wait for a sale or try second hand on eBay as the quality will still be fab. They do have regular sales.

Alternative is to try decathlon? Or buy a decent water proof cagoule (thin coat) which can go over a thick fur lined hoody. It’s a bit more practical and gives more options eg for milder wet days

Didrikson are my fav coats at the moment for all of us but not cheap. Again eBay?

Thingywhatsit · 06/10/2019 08:21

Have you looked on amazon? I got a navy north face coat on there for less than £25 for my dd. Definitely waterproof/wind proof and warm but not overly thick and bulky. It won’t be good enough on its own in the deepest of winter so would need a thin fleece as well but will do the majority of the next 6 months ok.

EmmiJay · 06/10/2019 08:28

Joules and Mountain Warehouse are good. DD has a Joules padded navy one thats surviving the term pretty well (it was £37?)

Mixingitall · 06/10/2019 08:32

I’ve been looking at this boys one, Trespass must have a girls equivalent?

Mountain Warehouse. Got coats for both my DDs there. DD1's is one of those with a fleece layer that can be zipped in or out depending on how warm it is. Have tested them in some torrential downpours over the summer and they are genuinely waterproof. Cost less than £30 each, but there was a sale on at the time.

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/10/2019 15:38

Trespass. I just bought this one for my DD.
this one

carsleyladiessociety · 06/10/2019 16:38

Mountain warehouse coats- especially the ones with the fleece inside. Warm and properly dry.

SellFridges · 06/10/2019 16:39

My two have Trespass ski jackets. They’re excellent and both were less than £30.

Clutterbugsmum · 06/10/2019 17:03

I've bought this one from Amazon for last 2 times I've had to buy my DD coats and they are heavy rain proof. They are normally around £25.
