King size duvets on double beds.

Why? Just why does my mother insist on placing the heaviest king size duvet on her guest bed? She's also helpfully put the electric blanket on max so I was in need of my feet being out. Of course, there is that much duvet I can't kick it or pull it lying down so I have had to get up and move the damned thing. It feels like suffocation.

Any one do this strange practice of bigger duvets on small beds? Why? Please help me understand.

Also, why not just buy a bigger bed? All my beds have correctly fitting bedding. Am I missing a trick? Is it supposed to add luxuary to a humble double? Or does it add warmth? I guess that is it. My mother is obsessed with warmth. Madness.

Yes we do! When you share the duvet it reduces the fighting over the duvet and being exposed to the cold.

QueenofPain · 05/10/2019 23:27

I have super king duvet on my king size bed. It means there’s more duvet to go around when sharing a bed with someone.

If you don’t have enough strength in your arms of legs to kick a duvet off then you better get down the gym Grin

I have a king size duvet on my double bed. It means when my husband rolls over taking most of the duvet with him there is some left for me and I don't have to freeze! King size bed wouldn't fit in our room.

Oh and my first home was a small flat, I loved on my own so a double bed was the practical choice. 12 years later maybe we should upgrade to king size!

just2comment · 05/10/2019 23:32

Alway buy king for doubles!

WanderingMind · 05/10/2019 23:32

We always go a size up the duvet on any bed. The twin beds in our spare room have double duvets, our bed has a king, much much more comfy than grabbing the edge to stop it moving when your partner turns over!

KevinsCarter · 05/10/2019 23:33

It's a very weighty 15 tog duck feather affair!!! No need for a gym with my mother tucking duvets under matresses.

If you're sharing a double bed with another adult a king size means more duvet to share so you are more likely to be comfortable. Plus double bedrooms (especially guest rooms) don't necessarily have enough space for a kingsize bed.

Yes king quilt on double bed after years of XH pulling it off me in the night.
Now I'm single so no longer a problem but all my quilt covers are king size.

DD also has a double quilt on her small double bed

KevinsCarter · 05/10/2019 23:35

I see I am in the minority here. DH and I obviously don't move much once asleep. Interesting how we are all different.

It sounds like the tog is too much, not the size of the duvet.

DerbyshireOatcake · 05/10/2019 23:40

I always size up a duvet but 15 tog would finish me off! I find 9 tog the most I ever need at home (cool), 15 tog at my mum's (boiling) house would give me heat exhaustion I think 😬.

Nat6999 · 05/10/2019 23:41

I always size up duvets, means that there is enough overhang at both sides.

Redglitter · 05/10/2019 23:43

I far prefer a king size duvet on my double bed. Looks nicer and plenty to go round. Having said that most of the year I have a 1 tog duvet on.

Nanalisa60 · 05/10/2019 23:44

I have a king size bed with a superking quilt because if i didn’t my husband and myself would be fighting all night over the quilt!!

DontCallMeShitley · 05/10/2019 23:48

I have a kingsize duvet on a 4ft bed. I have had kingsize duvets since I had a 5ft bed. No intention of getting rid of my nice bedding. My duvet hangs over the edges and hides the stuff under the bed.

I only use a 3 or 4.5 tog though, sometimes both when it is really cold. And no feathers.

Lillipops · 05/10/2019 23:59

The trick is....super king size bed...one super king duvet and one king size....double duvet..he can wrap up in his I can wrap up in mine. No stealing duvets, after we’ve DTD obviously! It enhances shenanigans 🤗

WhatTiggersDoBest · 06/10/2019 00:01

We do the opposite. We currently have a double on a king size bed. The measurement for the double quilt cover at home bargains was wider than our king size Ikea bed (new this year so UK bed sizes not EU ones which I think are wider). I can't comprehend the endless vast expanse of a king size duvet on a double bed. Can you untuck it and fold it in half and pull out the electric blanket while you're at it?

Chloemol · 06/10/2019 00:32

I have a king on my double bed. Double duvets don’t go over the edge much and are difficult to share. So much easier with a bigger duvet to bed

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 00:37

A double duvet isn't big enough for a double bed with two people in it.

A king size duvet is a bit more forgiving and is ok for a king size bed.
Both need a double flat sheet between occupants and duvet. Any bigger and you get swamped by sheet.

OldAndWornOut · 06/10/2019 00:40

I have a kingsize on my double bed, but I'm quite fat, so I need a lot of material.

TottieandMarchpane · 06/10/2019 00:42

Duvet draped further down looks nicer. Higher duvet:mattress ration reduces bedding theft.

TottieandMarchpane · 06/10/2019 00:43

Ratio, not ration.

katewhinesalot · 06/10/2019 00:44

I have a king size duvet on my king size bed which is fine but I also needed one for double beds. Double duvets just aren't big enough for two people.

MaidenMotherCrone · 06/10/2019 00:45

We always had a super king on a king size bed. For the duvet theft. We have gone one further and now have 2 singles. Much better. No more armpit clamping/roll over technique needed.
