King size duvets on double beds.

Why? Just why does my mother insist on placing the heaviest king size duvet on her guest bed? She's also helpfully put the electric blanket on max so I was in need of my feet being out. Of course, there is that much duvet I can't kick it or pull it lying down so I have had to get up and move the damned thing. It feels like suffocation.

Any one do this strange practice of bigger duvets on small beds? Why? Please help me understand.

Also, why not just buy a bigger bed? All my beds have correctly fitting bedding. Am I missing a trick? Is it supposed to add luxuary to a humble double? Or does it add warmth? I guess that is it. My mother is obsessed with warmth. Madness.

I always have king sized duvet on double bed and super king size on king sized bed. Nice and cosy.

StarlingsInSummer · 06/10/2019 07:22

We have a 4.5 tog king-sized down duvet on our bed in winter - it’s great because our DS often climbs in in the night, and the double just wasn’t big enough. I like to wrap myself up in it like a cocoon with only my face sticking out, couldn’t manage that when sharing a double duvet with a wriggly child and a six foot bloke.

IncrediblySadToo · 06/10/2019 07:27

@skittles. No, sadly not. Small double, Double, king, super king and it’s like women’s clothing -manufacturers say it’s a certain size, but often the fit isn’t right and given they’re square/rectangle it shouldn’t be that bloody difficult

I'd heard of Queen size beds in Australia and wondered what size they were. Just Googled them and it seems that outside the UK a Queen size (5' wide) is what we call a King in the UK and a King is what we would call call a Super King (6' wide).

Never heard the term used in the UK, not even for a 4' double.

AppropriateAdult · 06/10/2019 07:28

Both need a double flat sheet between occupants and duvet. Any bigger and you get swamped by sheet.

Hang on, a sheet under the duvet?! I’ve only ever come across this in hotels, it seems like an awful faff for your own bed at home. And far too much potential for feet getting tangled up.

A queen sized bed is 4', smaller than a double. When we had a double we had a king sized duvet, we've kept it now we have a king sized bed but there is still some overhang. However 15 tog would be completely unbearable, we have a 3.5 tog and a 9 tog that popper together but we never use them together as they are too hot, in mild winters we don't even get the 9 tog out of storage. Never tuck in, that's the most annoying thing ever (I'd never buy a bed with a footboard either) and never have a flat sheet under the duvet. Also no to electric blankets - I do like a brushed cotton bottom sheet in winter though.

I always thought Queensized (US) version was bigger than a King, like in Chess.

I think some people must live in very warm houses judging by tog ratings. Or I suppose if you are sleeping next to someone it’s warmer.

Newmumma83 · 06/10/2019 07:42

We do again it’s so we are not fighting over the duvet ( I am a very restless sleeper )

dottiedodah · 06/10/2019 07:43

I would be boiling I think!.Many older people do feel the cold though!.Why not untuck the duvet on one side before going to sleep .Can you ask Mum to put the electric blanket on for a shorter time? .I expect she likes to feel her DC even though an adult ,is "all warm and cosy"!

We have a king-size duvet on a double bed, more blanket to go around!

originaldomesticgodess · 06/10/2019 07:55

I can recommend a wool duvet. Cool in summer and warm in winter. Bit weighty but you soon get used to it. Always a size up for us.

CodenameVillanelle · 06/10/2019 07:58

I have a queen bed just for me, so I use a lightweight double in the summer and a king size in the winter for warmth and cosines. You can really wrap a king size around you!
Plus if I have to share the bed a double isn't big enough. I like to tuck the duvet under me.

TSSDNCOP · 06/10/2019 07:59

My wise advice to teens leaving for uni is to buy a double duvet for their single beds Wink

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 06/10/2019 08:04

I am only use a 15 tog when it is absolutely freezing - as in Beast from the East cold.

And I also have a king on a double bed.

Straycatstrut · 06/10/2019 08:18

I'm single but still go for king size on a small double. Sooooo cosy.

Every year I treat myself to a huge 15 tog and a tartan fleecy cover, mmmmm Grin

TheNumberfaker · 06/10/2019 08:20

Two issues here. Size of duvet and tog rating.
We have a king size duvet on a double bed. We don’t have quite enough room for a king size bed, but having the ks duvet means we can both move around in bed without hogging the duvet.
We have 2 duvets. A 4.5 and a 10.5 tog. If it gets really cold, then a couple of blankets on top sorts it out. 13.5 tog all year round is just nuts!

janj2301 · 06/10/2019 08:46

I used double duvets on my girls single beds.

PavlovaFaith · 06/10/2019 10:39

Yes we have a king on a double because our mattress is about 40cm deep!! A double doesn't go down the sides.

ZaZathecat · 06/10/2019 10:43

You don't have a duvet-size problem, you have a tog problem! (Along with mad duvet-tucking-in practice by your DM).

Letseatgrandma · 06/10/2019 10:49

Also, why not just buy a bigger bed?

Because we can’t afford it?!Confused

maddiemookins16mum · 06/10/2019 11:15

We have a king on our double, stops the stealing of the quilt.

MontStMichel · 06/10/2019 11:24

We always go up a size for duvets - double on a single bed, king size on a double bed....So, it hangs down the side of the bed, to give plenty of duvet for when we turn over!

KnifeAngel · 06/10/2019 11:35

We don't have space for a king size bed. We have always had a kind sized quilt though. A double is just not big enough. Even now I sometimes wake up not covered. My DH is a quilt stealer.
