King size duvets on double beds.

Why? Just why does my mother insist on placing the heaviest king size duvet on her guest bed? She's also helpfully put the electric blanket on max so I was in need of my feet being out. Of course, there is that much duvet I can't kick it or pull it lying down so I have had to get up and move the damned thing. It feels like suffocation.

Any one do this strange practice of bigger duvets on small beds? Why? Please help me understand.

Also, why not just buy a bigger bed? All my beds have correctly fitting bedding. Am I missing a trick? Is it supposed to add luxuary to a humble double? Or does it add warmth? I guess that is it. My mother is obsessed with warmth. Madness.

Hang on, a sheet under the duvet?! I’ve only ever come across this in hotels

...and now Chez Fleas. DH can be a bit of a sweaty beast when in deep sleep so it helps moderate his temperature, and mine, and cuts down on number of times I have to wrestle with changing the duvet cover. I recommend it.

How does having an extra sheet over you make you cooler?

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/10/2019 14:04

My son has a double duvet on his single bed. I would be driven insane but he loves being all wrapped up.

It means you can dispense with your side of the duvet without being completely uncovered.

I have a king size duvet on my double bed. It means when my husband rolls over taking most of the duvet with him there is some left for me and I don't have to freeze! King size bed wouldn't fit in our room.

Same here, except I don't have a DH and it is DS2 who likes to swipe the whole duvet as he rolls over. I got fed up of suddenly being exposed to the freezing air in my cold room!

OP, sounds like you prefer a lower tog, thinner duvet. The size isn't the issue here really.

Roomba · 06/10/2019 14:52

Forgot to add that DS1 has a double duvet on his single bed. He likes to wrap himself up lots as if hibernating or in a cocoon Grin. He sleeps like a log though so I'm not complaining!

ElizaPancakes · 06/10/2019 15:32

I’m with you OP. Although the only time I’ve had this was sleeping in a single bed with a double duvet. I like to stick my legs out and tuck between them, it was impossible with a double and I got so hot!

CookPassBabtridge · 06/10/2019 15:35

I’ve always done this! I think it looks better hanging over the sides but more importantly it means there’s plenty of material for me and DP to snuggle round our bodies at both sides.

We have super kings on our kingsize. Much bigger so less likely one person loses their side to the other.

My daughters just bought a double bed and I recommended she buy kingsize bedding

chrisski33 · 06/10/2019 19:29

Jeez first world problems!

MulticolourMophead · 06/10/2019 19:36

When I lived with Ex, we had a superking on a king sized bed, less chance of him pulling all the quilt off when he rolled over, as he often did.

Now I'm on my own, I have a double quilt on a double bed, but if I were back to sharing a bed again, I'd go up a size to make sure there's enough.

DD has a double on her single bed, she likes the feeling of being wrapped and cocooned.

OP, I'd guess it's the tog rating that's the real issue, not the size. A 15 rating at this time of year is likely too warm for many people.

I currently use a 4.5 tog quilt as I get warm quickly and prefer to be cooler at night. DD has a 10 tog quilt and a warmer 13.5 tog quilt for winter, she prefers to be toasted. DS simply prefers to roll up in a blanket, he gets warm easily like me.

BringTheBounceBack · 06/10/2019 19:38

Why have I never done this!!!

Ecci · 06/10/2019 19:46

We have a super king size bed, and each have a king sized duvet. Luxury not to have your duvet pulled off by partner.

Wombleish · 06/10/2019 19:53

I think my DH and I must be most unusual as we have a standard double bed and duvet. Never had any problems with either.

Moremoneyplease · 06/10/2019 19:57

You can't beat a single duvet each on a king size bed. If it's good enough for the Scandinavians...

Jesse70 · 06/10/2019 20:04

Mine are king size duvets that way all my covers fit any bed lol
My DD has a double bed we have a king but both have a king duvet I think it makes perfect sense lol

I was heavily pregnant during a long, cold winter. Between a lot more of me and my body pillow, for once it was DH's turn to be deprived of his share of the duvet. He went and bought a super-king, heavy 13 tog, and bloody hell, it was awful! I was trapped under the weight of the thing, plus the existing difficulties of rolling over and absolutely cooked in the thing. I need access to stick limbs in and out through the night as needed and hate being drowned/pinned down by bedding. In a hotel, I have to unmake the bed to sleep in it.

The duvet is stored away in a cupboard just-in-case of Beast-from-the-East-Brexit-geddon Grin

ShadowOnTheSun · 06/10/2019 20:53

I have a double bed and superking duvet, the highest tog rating I could find. I sleep alone. The reason for this? Um, it's because I'm ALWAYS freezing, I like to fully cover my head when I sleep and also I like to snuggle in a BIG duvet and have lots of extra to the sides. Oh, and in winter I have one or two woolen blankets on top of everything. But I appreciate such arrangement may not be for everyone.

My mum is the opposite. When I visit, I sleep in a giant bed with a tiny thin single duvet. First night I've slept like this, I was freezing and uncomfortable. So I told her and the duvet problem is now sorted :).

Starlight456 · 06/10/2019 21:15

I live on my own . I have a king size on my double bed and on ds’s late night crawls into my bed still takes it all. Maybe I should get super king 🤔

KevinsCarter · 06/10/2019 21:49

I am glad to say I'm back in my own bed tonight. King size duvet on a king size bed. Although it's a 13.5 or it could be a 10.5. It's not a monster and DH and I seem to have enough each even when DD jumps in.

I did look at my parents' bed and there's a super king on a kingsize. Equally heavy. I asked my DM and she said to keep warm. Madness. Years ago, my grandmother said she did this and I do remember my mother being a bit surprised about it. That duvet's been on over a year and annoys me immensely. It's worse when DH comes to stay over too. First world problem, eh.

For the poster who was asking, the huge duvet is on all year round. It's like she suddenly goes back to thinking there is no central heating, which there is and it's set a 20 from 3pm. They're not particularly old, just seem to like being too bloody hot for my liking.

Really interesting that there's a mix of people who love this and a few after my own heart.

Do you have to have a sleeping partner to have an opinion here?
