King size duvets on double beds.

Why? Just why does my mother insist on placing the heaviest king size duvet on her guest bed? She's also helpfully put the electric blanket on max so I was in need of my feet being out. Of course, there is that much duvet I can't kick it or pull it lying down so I have had to get up and move the damned thing. It feels like suffocation.

Any one do this strange practice of bigger duvets on small beds? Why? Please help me understand.

Also, why not just buy a bigger bed? All my beds have correctly fitting bedding. Am I missing a trick? Is it supposed to add luxuary to a humble double? Or does it add warmth? I guess that is it. My mother is obsessed with warmth. Madness.

Only way of avoiding death by frozen feet in my house. That said I'm currently using a 7.5 tog with long PJs and debating a step up to a 10.5 and shorts... 15 tog down would be a sweaty nightmare!

An electric blanket and a king-size duvet sound like bliss to me (but then, I am always cold).

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 00:55

Every bed should have an electric blanket.

Yep
King duvets on double bed
It’s the tog that’s your problem

sam221 · 06/10/2019 01:04

Always a size up!!! I sleep by myself and love the extra bedding. Also layers, are wonderful.

CherryBathBomb · 06/10/2019 01:09

I have a king size duvet on my double bed. I think it looks nicer and will be handy in the winter!

Miljah · 06/10/2019 01:15

Big duvet, light tog. Sorted.

UniversalAunt · 06/10/2019 01:16

Enough duvet.
Too many togs.

JenniR29 · 06/10/2019 05:50

I always use a bigger duvet, much snugglier and less fighting over it!

BlackCatSleeping · 06/10/2019 05:57

Nope, I’m the opposite. I only have single duvets on all beds.

KevinsCarter · 06/10/2019 06:03

Interesting point that it looks nicer. That'll be it maybe. I could just ask my mother since she has a KS with the same size duvet. I like the idea of 2 singles. I could happily take that further and have 2 single beds too.

I am sweating like anything. Window open. The bed literally took ages to cool down after the eectric blanket. It must be the tog rating because it's weighing down on my stomach like a weighted blanket you can get for sensory processing disorder.

I have a king size duvet on my double bed and double duvets on the singles. You need some overhang for comfort and they look better too.

All my beds have footboards so the duvets can be tucked in at the bottom though they hang loose at the sides.

SerafinaPekkalasbroomstick · 06/10/2019 06:22

Yep we do this too. Helps with duvet stealing by husband and the children when they get in! I'm with you on wanting to be cool at night though, DH has the heating coming on at 5.30 with the thermostat at 21? I wake with a headache every day.

PragmaticWench · 06/10/2019 06:28

Ugh, the talk of duvets being tucked in at the bottom is making me feel really anxious!! Such a claustrophobic feeling, my DM does this on the guest beds at her house and I have to rip it all out before getting into the bed. Same with hotels. Who wants their feet pinned to the bed?!

dudsville · 06/10/2019 06:33

I use a4 tog in winter so that would have been hot for me too and is have slept on top. I think the larger duvet idea is great, we've opted for separate duvets (superking bed) but I think this is a great alternative.

CheshireDing · 06/10/2019 06:48

We have a bigger duvet on a double bed but the actual tog is really low.

I can't stand a ridiculously thick heavy duvet, we have the windows open at night and I would still feel like I was suffocating ! (we tried a thicker one once, it only lasted a weekend) Grin.

The tog and the tucking in and the electric blanket and where your DM is going wrong, it's all too much !

Just stick with the bigger size, job done.

Super king duvet on a king size bed here. Means there's plenty of drapage and less fighting over the quilt. It's a very light quilt though, not a thick heavy one, although we have a heavy one for winter.

DappledThings · 06/10/2019 06:58

We have a king size duvet on a double bed. Only 10.5 tog though and use that all year round. When it's hot I just sleep without any cover.

The bigger duvet just makes it easier to share.

redchocolatebutton · 06/10/2019 07:02

we have separate single duvets.
solves aaaal problems in the wirld.

sashh · 06/10/2019 07:02

Ok dear, I have a king size duvet on a single bed.
It does convert to a double.

megletthesecond · 06/10/2019 07:14

DS has a double on his single bed. He says it's dead toasty now.

Skittlesandbeer · 06/10/2019 07:14

Why is no one mentioning queen sized beds? Is it not a UK thing?

I put Queen duvets on double beds, and king duvets on queen mattresses. Always one size larger (except single on singles).

Looks better, and gives everyone a chance at some covers!

ConFusion360 · 06/10/2019 07:19

No. What size are they? Slightly smaller than a king?

DappledThings · 06/10/2019 07:21

In the UK a queen size is a small double. So a queen duvet on a double bed would be a size under not over.
