Cost of Cinema

Hadn’t been for a while. DH and I went to the cinema on Wednesday. We did the meer cats 241 thing, so it cost just under £11 .
We took our own food and drink from poundland,😀and the film was great, so I suppose all and all it was a cheapish couple of hours. Saw a family of four in front of us with no discount tickets, so paying the full whack, and bought drinks and snacks. It must have been at least £60 😮 I noticed that the cinema wasn’t that busy. Do people pay full price for the cinema and buy food? I have always taken our own snacks and drinks.

I pay through the nose for a trough of salted popcorn but I take my own drink.

I wish I was one of those "I go to see a film not stuff my face" types but I'm really not.

JoJoSM2 · 04/10/2019 09:54

It wouldn't occur to me to go to Poundland to stock up. We tend to get a drink and some popcorn to share.

ExecutiveFiat · 04/10/2019 09:57

We got popcorn a drink, and some chocolate for a fiver. Poundland is very close to the cinema. Saw lots of people doing the same. No way would I pay cinema food prices!

The meerkat offers are only on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you go another day then you have to pay full price. I always take a drink with us. I think popcorn and other noisy food should be banned. I go to watch the film not listen to crunching.

SoftBlocks · 04/10/2019 09:59

Yep always do Poundland although one cinema near us has the dreaded Pick’n’Mix which is allowed occasionally.

Doyoumind · 04/10/2019 09:59

There are some cinemas where it's only £5 now for a ticket so you can both go for £5 on Tuesday or Wednesday and take snacks with you.

Lightsabre · 04/10/2019 10:01

If you are a member of the Civil Service/Local Government etc you can get cinema tickets for £3.99 any showing at any time. London cinemas are more expensive (I think £7.50 a ticket) and almost all cinemas are in the Scheme. We always bring our own drinks but ds likes cinema popcorn the best so splurge on that!

Babdoc · 04/10/2019 10:01

Why does anyone need to eat while watching a film? Don’t you have dinner before you go?
Nobody sits chomping popcorn during an opera or an orchestral concert, and we don’t starve to death before the end! What’s the difference with a film?

Lightsabre · 04/10/2019 10:02

Forgot to say that is through membership of the Civil Service Social Club (SCCS).

SchoolDecision19 · 04/10/2019 10:03

I go to vue (4.99) on a Tuesday so 2.50 each and bring snacks and drinks from aldi.

ExecutiveFiat · 04/10/2019 10:05

Our local independent cinema is only £5.50, even at the weekend, but doesn’t always have the latest releases. We go there mostly.

Our cinema reduced all it's tickets to £4.99 I love a nacho and a large cola whenI got it isn't very often so it is treat for me Smile

Morgan12 · 04/10/2019 10:07

My DS wouldn't let me stock up before. The popcorn and pick n mix is his favourite part of the cinema 😂

We go alot but our local is The Vue and it's only £5 a ticket.

Pascha · 04/10/2019 10:07

I only go if I have enough Tesco clubcard points to get us in to the local Cineworld for free. We take a bottle of drink each but I do allow the popcorn.

A family ticket is something like £38 - not remotely affordable full price for us.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/10/2019 10:08

Yep the cinema is so expensive now:

I only really go when its a film I really want to see. Also:

We tend to use the vue as its way cheaper than the odeon, and decent reclining seats

Kids films, go on Sunday mornings, you have to wait a few months after it's first released but the tickets are c. £2.50

Always take own food and drink.

ExecutiveFiat · 04/10/2019 10:08

By the way Judy was fantastic. Recommend it.

Really feel for families, having to pay those sort of prices. Pascha.

Aww is it the reviews are really positive might go next week i really fancy some nachosGrin

Marybennet · 04/10/2019 10:15

Our Odeon is never more than £5 a ticket whatever the day or time. A family ticket for 4 is only £18. It's next to a Wilko's so we stock up in there first.

EmpressJewel · 04/10/2019 10:16

I get my tickets through CSSC too and as a family of 4, we've been to the cinema for under £20.

We stop off and buy snacks on the way.

lyingwanker · 04/10/2019 10:21

I only go to the kids club screenings for £2. I can't afford the regular prices for us all. I think the cinema is a big treat for us so we would only pay full price for a film the kids really want to see like the new frozen movie, this only happens once every year/2 years really.

Whattodoabout · 04/10/2019 10:22

Always done the same as you. I have four DC so there’s no way I’m paying full price. Use the meerkat codes if I can or I pay for movie for juniors on a Saturday morning (£2.70 a ticket!). Always get Poundland snacks and drinks too.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/10/2019 10:22

Our Odeon is never more than £5 a ticket no way? Our's is £13.25 per adult & £9.75 per child!!!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/10/2019 10:24

Our Vue is £5 a ticket all the time, any day, any age, any film. I’d known for a while they only made money on the drinks and snacks so it makes sense.

BuffaloCauliflower · 04/10/2019 10:24

Should add that’s in Surrey, so not generally known for being cheap!
