Cost of Cinema

ExecutiveFiat · 04/10/2019 09:42

Hadn’t been for a while. DH and I went to the cinema on Wednesday. We did the meer cats 241 thing, so it cost just under £11 .
We took our own food and drink from poundland,😀and the film was great, so I suppose all and all it was a cheapish couple of hours. Saw a family of four in front of us with no discount tickets, so paying the full whack, and bought drinks and snacks. It must have been at least £60 😮 I noticed that the cinema wasn’t that busy. Do people pay full price for the cinema and buy food? I have always taken our own snacks and drinks.

I have free cinema tickets from my bank. Must actually use them!

IamMadameX · 04/10/2019 20:55

Love going to cinema my escapism. Have a Cineworld card which is £18.60 a Month so try and go twice a week so really get my money worth.

But always buy snacks elsewhere as so expensive £3.95 for a bag of sweets when only £1.00 from Tesco.

Was sat near a women the other day who knitted all the way through the film!

NemoIsLost · 04/10/2019 21:26

I have recently started going to the cinema again, sometimes with DM, sonetimes DH
We've seen bohemian rhapsody, Victoria, downton, yesterday etc
Its a new 'showcase' cinema with reclining seats and treat boxes. It's my little bit of escapism. £11 each

I love the Everman... £13 a ticket but worth it. Like being at a private screening. And they bring you wine Grin
I hate eating at the cinema. The smell, the rustling.

Mrsjayy · 06/10/2019 17:24

I read people walked out of Joker it was too dark and twisted Shock

smemorata · 06/10/2019 17:28

I hope it wasn't too twisted. My 14 year old saw it last night and he liked it!
We never usually eat at the cinema. Last time I went with dd9 the people next to us were literally eating all the time and couldn't believe she didn't want anything. I think they thought I was being tight!

muddledmidget · 06/10/2019 17:31

Our local cinema is a picture drome and I've just booked 2 tickets to see Joker tomorrow and selected our seats for £8 for both of us, plus the snacks and drinks are reasonably priced (less than a fiver for popcorn and slushie)

Kyvia · 06/10/2019 17:40

We have Cineworld unlimited cards, they’re great, also get discounts on the food/drinks as well.

Joker was a bit pants.

BuildBuildings · 06/10/2019 17:52

Lolz to those asking why people eat in the cinema. Cinemas have always sold popcorn and snacks. You obviously don't have to eat but it's enjoyable. Some mumsnetters are right miserable buggers.

We go quite a lot as we have odeon limitless (no kids). I often get a stabucks or similar to take in.

BuildBuildings · 06/10/2019 17:53

I'm interested in what people thought was rubbish about joker?

AlexaShutUp · 06/10/2019 17:56

Our local cineworld cinema costs around £6.50 for adults and £5 for children. The (less nice) odeon costs around £4 for everyone. I generally pay with clubcard vouchers so it is very affordable.

Always go to wilkos first to buy snacks as the cinema prices are exorbitant!

Stravapalava · 06/10/2019 20:18

I get student discount. I get pick & mix and a drink from Wilkos (the one near me has an epic wall of pick & mix). Doesn't cost me that much.

Stravapalava · 06/10/2019 20:19

And I loved Joker!!

CakeNinja · 06/10/2019 20:32

Our local cinema is a cineworld, not sure of the exact pricing but it’s around £35ish for the 3 dc and I to go.
I rarely go because I hate films and sitting still etc, usually fall asleep.
However the only thing that will get me there is the promise of salty popcorn and ice cream! We are that family you saw in front of you, £70 or so by the time we’ve bought tickets and all chosen snacks and drinks!
If we went more often I would bring my own food and drinks I suppose but I’m happy to suck it up as a rarity.
Dds go lots with their friends and take their own things with them.

smemorata · 06/10/2019 20:36

Cinemas have always sold popcorn and snacks.
Actually my local cinema doesn't sell any refreshments at all. 🤣

YourBonesAreWet · 06/10/2019 20:44

I pay £18 a month for unlimited and go 1/2 times a week usually. It works with Meerkat codes too so DH is free.

I never buy food or drink though.

BarbedBloom · 06/10/2019 21:05

We have the monthly cinema passes that also give us discounts on food there. Sometimes we buy and sometimes we bring our own. The other cinema around here though doesn't allow people to bring in outside food or drink and they glance in your bags to check

BarbedBloom · 06/10/2019 21:07

Oh and we both loved Joker

Girasole02 · 06/10/2019 21:13

I have an odeon Limitless pass £17 a month. Go twice a week on average. Joker alone was £12 when I went so quids in. Take own drink and, depending on time of day, a snack.

MadisonAvenue · 06/10/2019 21:17

Our local Odeon ranges from £8.75 on a weekday afternoon to £15.25 on a Saturday.

We're considering getting their Limitless cards though, at £17.99 a month per person.

MadisonAvenue · 06/10/2019 21:20

Oh, and those prices are at a smallish town in the Midlands.

RunningNinja79 · 06/10/2019 21:31

When I take my DDs we go to an Empire cinema on a weekend morning for £1 a ticket. They are usually older films (for example we saw Aladdin - the Will Smith one there last week which you can now see on sky) and are part of the junior screenings. We buy food and drinks from poundland too.

If I go with DH we tend to go on a friday night due to childcare reasons so we pay full price. However we go once every 4-6 weeks. We also buy Ice creams there, but also go to Five Guys first. For us though, we class it as date night. We dont go anywhere else much.

If there's a big film we really want to see we might take a day off on a Tuesday and go during the day while the DCs are at school on the Meerkat movies codes, but this is once a year, maybe twice. On these occasions we buy food from elsewhere too.

TryingAndFailing39 · 06/10/2019 21:38

We always pay full price for tickets but also always take our own snacks and bottles of water.
