What is the most delicious pen to write stories with?
This is for a 12 year old, so nothing too expensive.

Lamy Safari fountain pen? Lovely and chunky, a nice nib and less than £20. Great colours too.

MulticolourMophead · 30/09/2019 20:01

Don't forget the ink. Lamy do some nice coloured cartridges, but if you get a converter, you can get all sorts of coloured bottled ink. Grin

OP, take a look at the Cult Pens site, loads of us drool over stuff on there.

Personally, I have a Plooms pen (not impressed with the grip), a Cross Bailey (love it), a Sheaffer Prelude that's more than 20 years old (love this one) and a pen from a newish company, Dryden. I like that pen but they do the nibs a bit finer than normal, eg my medium nib pen writes a little finer than all my other medium nibs. I prefer broader nibs but it does write nicely. It's a British company, I believe. Dryden are on Amazon and I got mine for under £20.

Lamy Al Star, bit more luxurious than safari with some lovely bright colored ink.

Silentlysinking101 · 30/09/2019 20:35

I love my Cross ballpoint... Got an amazing offer on Groupon.. Definitely worth checking out, lovely weight, smooth rollerball top... Bloody amazing!

Dp is a complete pen geek and I bought him the same one and he loves it too.

I think they were under a tenner on Groupon

EternallyGrapefruit · 30/09/2019 20:36

I still love a good Inkjoy. Cheap, but has a beautiful roll to it.

tararabumdeay · 30/09/2019 20:42

Just got a Dryden on Amazon for £12. It's a lightning deal with £2 voucher. Nearly timed out though. I had about 12 minutes left.

Thanks for the tip.

Pilot g-tec c4. The only pen I will use, and I've converted all the pen lovers in my office too...

Unicorndiva · 30/09/2019 21:18

Lamy pens

Rivergreen · 30/09/2019 22:11

Also agree with Lamy Safari pen. You can get some fab colours and they're comfortable and smooth straight out of the box. I have one for the sensible blue black (a lovely navy colour) ink for work and another that's currently for pink ink.

Is the 12 yr old happy using a fountain pen though? It might take a bit of practice at first as it tends to slow down writing which you need to get used to.

SapphireSeptember · 30/09/2019 22:41

I am cheap, my favourite pen to do a lot of writing with is a Bic black biro, although I like Ink Joy pens too. I can't use fountain/cartridge pens, I find them too messy, ditto with gel pens/rollerballs. Give me a plain old biro, I find it faster to write with and get my thoughts out onto the paper. Smile

Blueshadow · 30/09/2019 22:48

I find Lamy pens quite heavy. But I love my Parker pen.

ladybird69 · 01/10/2019 02:30

Faber castell ballpoint pen. You don’t write, it just seems to flow across the pages! Wonderful. I bought mine from amazon, but Cult pens are a great site to buy from.

MulticolourMophead · 01/10/2019 03:00

I like the ink joy pens too, especially the straight ones with fhe triangular barrel.

I've never found fountain pens slow my writing down, though, but I've been using them for 40 years.

And I forgot to mention I also had a cheap Manuscript Trio italic fountain pen. It was great for everyday writing, it broke when I dropped it on a hard floor. Cartridge only for that one.

OpiesOldLady · 01/10/2019 03:50

Ooohh... pen porn!!! I never knew there was such thing!

GlitteredAcorns · 01/10/2019 07:38

I could have never imagined that by asking an innocent question I'd fall down this wonderful pen/stationery rabbit hole. I might have to take the week off...

Stationary fetishes are a real thing 😁

If my budget allows, I plan on getting a Parson's Essential fountain pen, just under £50 online. I've had so many recommendations for this pen.

Dhalandchips · 01/10/2019 08:37

I love my Lamy, but occasionally I like a fine (orange) bic.

RaymondStopThat · 01/10/2019 08:41

I also love a Lamy Safari. It writes beautifully.

FrenchFancie · 01/10/2019 08:55

I have a Lamy safari, currently loaded with purple ink.
I was thinking of getting a second for ‘sensible’ coloured ink as well.
I know many people don’t like fountain pens. I’ve been writing with one for nearly 30 years so I’m used to it. My handwriting is neater when I write in fountain pen. But I also like the bic crystal soft pens (ballpoints) for cheap and cheerful Chuck in the bag type pens.

WellTidy · 01/10/2019 08:59

If its not a fountain pen that she's after, Uniball eye are very nice. Lots of colours too, you an get a pack of six that includes pink, purple and green as well as red, blue and black. About a tenner. A pleasure to write with.

DS11yo also likes Pilot Frixion rollerballs, which are erasable. They are super smooth to write with.

Flippetydip · 01/10/2019 11:01

Both DS (aged 10) and I have a fairly serious stationery thing going down so I am beyond delighted to see such an amazing thread. Thanks OP :)

My current favourite is a uni-ball AIR micro. However, it does also very much depend on the paper as well as the pen in my humble opinion. You need good quality paper for either the uni-ball AIR or a fountain pen otherwise it's blots and looks horrible and totally ruins the writing experience.

Flippetydip · 01/10/2019 11:02

Oh yes, and I definitely second the Pilot Frixion erasable rollerballs -they are LOVELY to write with and have some lovely colours.

Flippetydip · 01/10/2019 11:03

And Oh.my.word! Cult Pens - thanks so much @MulticolourMophead - I'm off to waste hours of time that I should be spending working.

Hendrytd · 01/10/2019 17:24

I am looking for a Sophia ball point pen which has a chiselled sided barrel as I have lost the one I was bought & this had a lot of sentimental value...tried amazon & ebay but not able to find another one. If anyone comes across one I would be so grateful ..new or used is fine...
Link below shows a picture of the pen
