Could you easily walk 10k

Shoeshelpplease · 29/09/2019 19:32

Would you need to train?

Would you struggle at all to walk it (say within two hours)

Would you ache or hurt the next day?

His is general terrain, nothing difficult or unusual about it.

Yes I could easily walk that and wouldn't ache the next day. DH leads a monthly walk in our Parish and we usually walk between 5 - 6.5 miles. Walkers are aged between 4 and late 70's and all have managed the walks including climbing over numerous styles - not all are experienced walkers but some are members of other walking groups.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2019 20:24

Yes, I regularly walk this far for pleasure in pretty places

At a quick march, could do it in 2 hours but closer to 3-4 if done at leisure

foreverroses · 29/09/2019 20:25

I walk 7-8ks each weekday so it wouldn’t bother me to do a bit more.

We regularly walk this as a family on easy English terrain ( footpaths, fields etc.). This summer we enjoyed 11.5 km in the mountains ( including lots of uneven terrain). My son is 8 and has hyper mobility. He needed some encouragement but easily managed it.

Shoeshelpplease · 29/09/2019 20:25

Thanks all, didn't expect that level of response. We are doing a 10k walk for charity and some are saying (not joking) they will need to train for it and they are worried.

I was a bit bemused as I regularly do so this. But I have a dog. I wondered generally if people without dogs and those that don't walk for hobbies would struggle with this, but I see not.

Just general interest.

I also find the 10k steps a day target and often gain double or triple that but I know some struggle.

Health issues aside I wonder if we are just not moving as much as a nation .... but clearly Mumsnetters are!

Any able bodied person should be worried if they couldn’t tbh.

BentlyandPalmers · 29/09/2019 20:28

10,000 steps for me is about 7km. That’s just normal everyday walking isn’t it?

DelurkingAJ · 29/09/2019 20:29

If you wanted me to run it I’d be in trouble but walk it, no worries. I’m horribly unfit.

I’d expect DS2 (3.5) to get round it, frankly.

Tisfortired · 29/09/2019 20:33

I usually do between 8-10k steps a day. That's walking DS to school, then walking to station, walking to work and then doing it all again in reverse!

I have a sit down office job though, so 10k can't be that difficult if I manage it.

OrchidInTheSun · 29/09/2019 20:33

I think some people don't really realise that they walk almost that distance most days.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2019 20:33

Yes I can do it, I did a similar distance today. It took me more like 3 hours because I kept stopping to play a game. If I didn't keep stopping it would obviously be quicker, probably under 2 hours I think.

I am forty, fat and unfit, so walking is my exercise. I don't run, or go to the gym, but I do enjoy a good walk (with my stupid game on my phone to entertain me).

Dyrne · 29/09/2019 20:34

I really don’t see the point in sneering at people who think they may need to train for the a 10Km walk?

Surely it’s a good thing that this is the challenge that gets them out walking more and increasing their personal level of fitness?

Some people just don’t walk a lot - they don’t have a dog, don’t live near enough to work to walk there, have other hobbies that take up time other than walking; or don’t feel comfortable or confident walking in the ‘outdoors’. Maybe they’ll be absolutely fine walking 10Km but haven’t really measured their walks before so just think it sounds like a longer distance than it is?

Can you suggest nice local walks they can do to build up their confidence and fitness, OP? Maybe suggest a lunchtime walking group?

Or you can be a sneery cow about it and start a thread online to invite mockery, i’m sure that will be lovely and helpful Hmm

Yes this!

Check your iPhones if you have the Health app turned on.

Yes now. Even 3 months ago no way. 6 months ago I could barely do 10 meters.

I was very ill. I'd ache for a few days and I can barely believe it, but I could do it.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 29/09/2019 20:37

I think it's bizarre that people think that unless you have a dog you can't go for long walks anywhere!

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2019 20:37

orchid that really depends on your lifestyle. I have to consciously go out to walk that much in a week day. If, like me, you drive to work and back, with a fairly sedentary job, it's a struggle to get many steps into the day at all. If, like my DH, you walk 20 mins to work, then do a fair amount of walking at work, walk home, then he's got that target by lunchtime. So lifestyle/commute makes a huge difference to how far you walk on a daily basis.

frumpety · 29/09/2019 20:37

I could do it fairly easily with decent shoes on, my BMI is 42, would find hill work harder though so if its 3 miles uphill and 3 miles downhill , my knees would suffer. On the flat , no issues.

Why ?

IncrediblySadToo · 29/09/2019 20:39

Yes, I could walk 10km easily enough and no I wouldn’t ache the next day, but I have a problem with my leg at the moment, so it would take me a bit over two hours, but before this recent nightmare I’d easily do it in under two hours.

However, you’ll mostly get people saying ‘yes’ most people who would struggle won’t post. Human nature.

Why are you asking?

If you think someone else is being isthetuc - that’s mean.

If it’s for you and you’re able bodied and reasonably healthy then you’ll be able to build up to it pretty quickly

fallfallfall · 29/09/2019 20:39

comfortable footwear needs sorting, same with clothing (windy or rain).
it can mean some planning but a nice chatty walking buddy and two hours flies by.

isabellerossignol · 29/09/2019 20:40

When I lived in a city I think I easily walked that sort of distance on an average day. I reckon most city dwellers probably walk loads (unless ill health prevents it of course). But now that I live rurally I don't walk all that much really because nothing is within walking distance.

TwatCat · 29/09/2019 20:40

Yes, I do a 5km or a 10km walk every evening. 5km mostly but about twice a week do a 10km.

foreverroses · 29/09/2019 20:40

Is it the SleepWalk you’re planning to do?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/09/2019 20:43

@Mitebiteatnite That's great to hear (the part about the consultant listening and agreeing, not that you might have a connective tissue problem). PM me any time if you want any more suggestions!

As a group I'd imagine most people would be able to manage this with relatively little training; if they're nervous then building up their fitness with training walks obviously isn't going to harm them, but it's also not Everest, so won't need months of heavy preparation.

Difficultcustomer · 29/09/2019 20:45

No, due to disability and a bit of laziness.
